So that image of Gaga with her face covered in sequins to look like a butterfly? Not the cover of this V‘s “Asian issue.” Turns out it was only a third of the cover of V‘s issue 71, on newsstands today.

Gaga’s column for the high fashion glossy also debuted today. It’s really long. And defensive. And kinda pretentious.

Some highlights:

He’s a benefactor of beauty queens, an egomaniac, the patron saint of the now-defunct “birther” movement, and super rich. Of COURSE we want to smell like him! WWD reports this morning that The Donald is in talks with Five Star Fragrances to launch a scent potentially called Success by Trump.

Trump made a foray into the fragrance business back in 2004 when he released Donald Trump the Fragrance with Estee Lauder. Shockingly, it didn’t do well. You can still find it at deep discount prices on the internet. Oh, the irony.

We found an old quote about Donald Trump the Fragrance on our favorite scent site, Basenotes:

At a hearing today in Paris, it was announced that John Galliano will stand trail on June 22 on charges that he made racist insults, WWD is reporting.

On February 24, just before the fall shows in Paris, Geraldine Bloch and Phillipe Vergitti alleged that Galliano verbally assaulted them, calling Bloch an “ugly, disgusting whore” with a “dirty Jew face.” Shortly after, Galliano’s infamous antisemitic tirade video hit the web and he was promptly canned as creative director at Dior. Another plaintiff, Fathia Oumeddour, who also named at the hearing, alleges that Galliano insulted her on October 8, 2010.

Maybe you’ve never heard of Vente-Privee, but if you’ve ever visited Gilt Groupe, HauteLook, Rue La La, etc., you know what they do. The French company launched a designer flash sales site back in 2001 (that’s six years before Gilt Groupe and HauteLook) and inspired the launch of Gilt. The firm is a huge player in Europe–they currently boast 13 million users and about $1 billion in yearly sales–but they’ve steered clear of the US. Until now.

This morning, American Express announced a joint partnership with Vente-Privee to launch an American site later on this year. (Each company owns 50% of the venture. And this is VP’s first foray into a non-European market.)

LOS ANGELES–Miranda Kerr’s body looks so good, it’s hard to believe she had a baby in January. We couldn’t believe how amazing the supermodel looked in March in that burgundy dress at a Victoria’s Secret event, and yesterday afternoon we got to glimpse her post-baby body in person. (And yes, she really does look better than she did pre-baby. If that’s possible.) The new mom was in LA celebrating the launch of the Victoria’s Secret Bombshell summer collection in a teeny blue dress that showed off her enviable legs and flat tummy.

So what’s her secret? Basically, the girl’s got good genes. Although she didn’t keep track of how much weight she actually gained, she estimates that she put on about 30-40 pounds. She practiced yoga throughout her entire pregnancy, walked a lot, and ate healthfully. “When I have the choice, I’ll eat organic food. I cook lots of veggies, steamed fish, lentils. I like to eat healthy.” Kerr credits her healthy eating habits, yoga, and breastfeeding with helping her shed pounds after she had the baby. Also, she started working out with a trainer, doing squats and resistance band training, because, “I’ve got to get that butt back into shape.” Uh, looks like it’s already in perfect shape.

Best Dressed: Cannes Film Festival, Day One

Thursday, May 12, 2011 / 8:47 AM

At the opening ceremony for the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival yesterday, stars turned out in high drama floor length finery. Rachel McAdams looked stunning in red and sheer Marchesa, so we forgive her that hat, and Uma Thurman (where has she been lately?) was gorgeous in a slightly altered white hot fall 2011 Versace. Cannes is all about glamor, something Fan Bing Bing obviously knows a thing or two about, and Salma Hayek and Karolina Kurkova brought the glitz, too, in shimmering gowns from Gucci Premiere and Armani Prive respectively. Ines de la Fressange looked the paragon of Parisian chic in Carven and Diane Kruger looked stunning, comme d’hab.

If this is the way Cannes is kicking off we can’t wait to see what else comes down the red carpet as the festival unfolds…

As a natural redhead, my life has been marked by both fierce ridicule and serious hairdresser envy. “Ginger” might as well have been my second name for the better part of primary school, and I spent most of my tween years begging my mother to let me get blond highlights, never understanding why she kept refusing and ruining my life. Now, I silently thank her every day for the adamant refusal and count myself lucky for having a color that is nearly impossible to replicate from a bottle. There’s something to be said for being a member of the 2% of the world’s population who are natural reds.

Yet lately, I’ve been amused to notice that more and more celebrities have adopted the look. I learned to love my locks, yet no one else really seemed to and, in general, successful redheads are few and far between. There just aren’t that many of us, dyed or not, and as a result I developed a minor fascination with almost anyone with red hair. So this sudden development from negative nickname to rising trend has left me slightly confused. Why the sudden change of heart, ladies? I certainly can’t tell you–I was born this way (sorry).

It’s never too early to get a perky, toned butt. Skechers now offers their (in)famous toning sneakers, Shape Ups, for little girls. (Thanks to the sharp eyes over at The Frisky for picking up on this one–take a peek at the commercial over there.)

Eight-year-olds are already getting Botox and using sophisticated makeup, so of course we need to focus on toning them up now. How else will they score a recording contract?

The commercial shows some typical cartoon “cool girls” in a rock band wearing Shape Ups and singing about how “she’s got the height/got the bounce/yeah she’s looking good.” While they don’t specifically say anything about toning in the commercial, the tag line is “Get fit.” The end of the commercial shows the girls being followed around by a bunch of goofy-looking boys unfathomably dressed like food (think hot dogs and cupcakes–I can’t even begin to dissect what THAT imagery is supposed to mean.)

Two very different, completely unrelated yet iconic items of clothing are going up for auction.

Sarah Ferguson, aka the Duchess of York, aka Fergie, told Oprah today that her eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, would auction off her infamous Philip Treacy fascinator on eBay to benefit UNICEF and Children in Crisis, according to People. (Fergie also, as it has been widely reported, confessed to Oprah that not being invited to the wedding while her daughters attended in all their couture-and-Treacy-finery was “very difficult.”)

Bea’s hat garnered almost as much attention as Kate’s wedding dress or Pippa’s bum, and has inspired the creation of several Facebook groups (my favorite is “Princess Beatrice’s hat looks like a uterus“). While most of the attention has been negative, Bea doesn’t mind.
