Gwyneth Paltrow 'Enters the 21st Century,' Joins Facebook and Twitter

Our online dose of Gwyneth Paltrow wisdom has been thus far limited to her weekly GOOP newsletter and various clips of her doing ridiculous things on talk shows, like rapping. Not anymore. Gwyneth is taking the world of social media by storm--she just opened Facebook and Twitter accounts. Her first tweet and Facebook wall post are the same--a video of her walking down an NYC street holding her phone at a not-so-flattering angle, giggling about how she has entered the 21st century.

Say what you will about Gwyneth (and we certainly have) but she's seriously building a brand and a presence outside the realm of acting. She has many adoring fans, as evidenced by this comment on her Facebook page: “I'm a person who doesn't particularly appreciate it when people overstate their case, but I'd like to say that anyone who hates on GOOP is pretty obviously a member of al-Qaeda.” (We’re happy that commenter isn’t prone to exaggeration or overstatement.)

We hope she realizes that, while she has many fans, she also has a contingent of detractors who thinks she is self-righteous, out-of-touch, and clueless (not us, of course). [Editor's note: Um, Cheryl, Gwyneth is amazing and I heart her. Fo' real.] It will be interesting to see the types of comments she gets from her followers and admirers alike. While she can police her Facebook page--and indeed, already had to clean out some undesirable pictures posted there--it’s harder to do that on Twitter. Once you tweet something, whether it’s a picture, video, or off-the-cuff remark, thousands of people are going to see it, and save it. So tread carefully, Gwynnie, and don’t take the haters personally.

As of press time she has 47,389 Facebook likes and 7,066 Twitter followers. Will you be one of them? We certainly will.
