PARIS–In his second showing in Paris, Amsterdam-based designer Ehud Joseph continued his exploration of how clothing and uniforms changes as life evolves in the modern world. This time, he looked at the concept of migration as a way of personal reinvention, of how life in a dynamic world where people move from one place to another affect the choice of the clothes they wear, which serve as a protection against the changes and alienation inherent to these migratory experiences. Joseph has his own history of moving from continent to continent. He was born in Israel, grew up in New Zealand, moved to London in 2002 and graduated from Central Saint Martins with an MA in 2006 and after several years of consulting gigs launched his own label in 2009 from Amsterdam.

That migration means that the traditional codes of menswear are challenged and adapted to new circumstances. Here, a single breasted jacket has a double breasted layered on top, forming a trompe d’oeil of wearing two jackets; a heavy cotton suit jacket has a sheer nylon back that deconstructs the hardness of the silhouette; a jacket with a high collar coat worn as outerwear; a tee-shirt adorned with paint reflecting street-wear elements. Among the best pieces in the show was a yellow and a white trench coat and a long, single-breasted jacket that can be worn as a light coat. Even the aqua blue short suit with a cotton mandarin collar polo shirt looked chic, minus of course the gold lips painted on the model.

If you’ve flipped through any fashion magazine this past spring, it’s safe to assume that you would have come across an editorial featuring color blocking. Now that the resort 2012 collections are coming to a close, it’s become obvious that this trend is not going anywhere–in fact, it seems to be more popular than ever.

More specifically, we’ve noticed it on countless short dresses. And why not? Resort collections seem like the perfect place for fun, easy, and colorful clothing. In fact, many of the looks show few additional accessories, presenting them as ideal for simple, no-fuss dressing.

Whether through fringe, fabric or sequins, expect to see plenty of color-blocking in the next year. Click through to see highlights from the resort collections.

Birchbox, the subscription-based service that offers users samples of new, high-end beauty products each month, has teamed up with Cynthia Rowley, who is bringing her own eclectic surf cool to the beauty-obsessed with a limited-edition box designed by Rowley herself.

The case is printed with a pattern of her own design and includes plenty of goodies, from a “life-changing” eyebrow pencil. Honestly, it’s worth it for the box alone–the pattern looks like psychedelic multi-colored liquid and will be an amazing decoration when it’s empty. However, it’s not as if you’re shelling out big bucks; Birchbox is only $10 a month, definitely worth the price of the amazing products you get inside. (Sign up for Birchbox here before June 30 to make sure you get the Rowley-designed package.)

Apparently, there is going to be a John Galliano Homme runway show in Paris tomorrow night. Galliano was fired from his eponymous label in April, but it’s possible that this collection was already in the works before then. As of now, all we have is an invitation, but we’ll report back when we know more.

The Galliano label is currently on the market, but that doesn’t mean LVMH won’t keep producing it until they sell it.

While hurrying between shows at Sao Paulo fashion week last week, I nearly ran into Kecya Felix, a Brazilian stylist/designer, who was wearing what looked like a burqa (it’s actually a niqab and abaya) embellished with sequined interlocking Chanel “C”s and an iPad around her neck. A slide show played on the iPad–”Could Coco Chanel Create This Look?” one slide asked.

I approached Felix to ask what she was all about. She shook her head and pointed towards her boyfriend, American Ryan Donnelly, who was functioning as her voice for the ever growing throngs of showgoers who stopped, intrigued, to find out more about Felix and her provocative outfit.

“She’s doing a project about sexism in clothing and it’s going to involve visual art as well as a small collection of clothing,” Donnelly explained. “We went on a trip to the middle east where she bought this [abaya and niqab]–she didn’t create it. We bought it in Amman, Jordan.”

While Felix wouldn’t talk during her stunt at SPFW (she did the same thing at Fashion Rio) she sent over an email with her artist statement (written in the third person):

While plenty of designers have channeled the ’70s over the past year, Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli infused their specifically romantic aesthetic into the bygone era for Resort 2012.

PARIS–One of the greatest things about fashion in the digital age is a designer’s ability to use images and ideas to encapsulate the reality of his or her clothes.

At last night’s second showing of the Mugler men’s spring collection in the vast hall of the Galérie de Mineralogie, creative director Nicola Formichetti gave a straightforward explanation in his press notes, which were placed inside a 4×6 black and white catalog entitled Brothers of Arcadia.

“I was interested in the idea of fantasy, dreams, and voyeurism. I also like the idea of modern and ancient myths. So I suppose this project is a combination of the two things: there are surfers, footballers, porn stars and classical gods all rolled into one here.”

Katie Grand styled Marc Jacobs for a spread in the latest issue of Industrie magazine called “Prada, I’m your biggest fan: Marc Jacobs comes out as a Miuccia maniac.” The 10-page spread, Industrie‘s second in which Marc dresses up in womens clothing, shows the designer dressed in various head-to-toe looks from Prada’s fall 2011 collection. Marc, clearly a voracious Prada fan, was shot by Manuela Pavesi, Micciua’s best friend. Quoted in the spread is Miuccia herself: “Of course I like Marc dressing in Prada very much. I think he is very brave and, most important of all, he looks completely acceptable and elegant. He has a real spirit and I like his work.”

A perennial fan of skirts, Marc’s love of wearing Prada womenswear is not relegated to the pages of magazines. “I got through this dreary winter by coming to work each day dressed in Cat-in-the-hat fur boas, striped pencil skirts, hospital scrubs, correctional-facility tops and brogue/espadrille/creeper-style shoes-all Prada. Some men’s, and some from the women’s collection.”

According to Katie Grand, Marc bought two of every skirt from the collection–one for New York and one for Paris. We’re jealous. It’s nice to see two designers supporting each other. Click through for the full spread.

American Medical Association Finally Addresses Photoshop: The AMA wants to work out restrictions in the advertising industry to “discourage the altering of photographs in a manner that could promote unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image.” It’s a start–could we hope for magazine editorials and covers next? {Jezebel}

Karlie Kloss’ Model Competition: The model is teaming up with Mother Model Management, who discovered the 18-year-old in Wisconsin in 2005, to hold a nationwide search for the “next top model” that will end in a charity fashion show and event, hosted by Kloss. {Telegraph}

Giorgio Armani Is Not A Fan of Prada: In another case of designer-on-designer hate, Armani bashed Miuccia Prada on her Hong Kong stock debut, saying it was just a way to cover debts. He also said both she and fellow Italians Dolce and Gabbana often turns out “ugly” clothes. {WWD}
