You won’t find any glaringly large interlocking C’s on Chanel‘s fall-winter 2011/12 Prestige eyewear collection. Instead, the brand has chosen to identify themselves with subtle emblems.

Pearls, the classic Chanel quilted effect, and a chain theme evocative of the handle on Chanel handbags accent the modern frames.

The oversize, aviator, and cat-eye framed sunglasses, as well as the eyeglasses, are available in muted hues of blue, taupe, and grey–a palette that’s new to the line.

Iconic designer Azzedine Alaïa, who is often an outspoken critic of the fashion industry, just ripped apart two of its biggest power players: Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour. Alaïa has had a longstanding feud with Wintour–in 2009, when he was omitted from the “Model as Muse” exhibit at the Met’s Costume Institute, he told WWD that Wintour “behaves like a dictator and everyone is terrified of her.”

In a candid interview with Virgine Magazine, Alaïa also talks about Galliano (whose job at Dior he reportedly turned down), blaming his troubles on the “system” of the fashion industry. But, it’s his digs at Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour that made us go, “Wow, he went there.” He essentially calls the Kaiser a “caricature” who has “never touched a pair of scissors in his life” and Anna a business person with no taste who everyone fears. All that hate is fine because, as he repeatedly states throughout the interview, women love him! Read on to find out what he really thinks about Anna, Karl, Galliano and more.

After three years working together, Uniqlo and Jil Sander are parting ways.

“With the recent completion of the design of the fall and winter collection, Ms. Sander and Uniqlo agreed that they had fully explored the possibilities of their creative collaboration and accomplished what they had set out to do. Consequently, the two parties have decided to wrap up their design consulting agreement with this collection,” Uniqlo said in a release.

Jil Sander designed Uniqlo’s popular +J line for Uniqlo. The collection, especially the outerwear, was really good and really affordable so we’re sad to see it go. One time a friend accidentally grabbed a men’s large version of her J+ wool coat after a late night at a bar and she loved it so much she had it tailored to fit her again and wore it lovingly the whole winter. (Funnier part of the story is that her friend went home with the guy whose coat she had stolen and he was super pissed about losing his Jil Sander for Uniqlo coat–”It looks like a girl’s coat but it’s not!” he insisted.)

In the past year alone, Elle Fanning has been in more magazine editorials than the number of years she’s been alive. The 13-year-old has already been dubbed a “fashion darling” by some and we can’t disagree. Heralded for her red carpet style, her modeling skills are nothing to scoff at either. She looks amazing in clothes, is incredibly photogenic and has this innate sophistication that is beyond her years. Mixed with the youthful energy of a 12-year-old (the age she was when most of these photos were taken) that consistently comes alive on camera. Photographers and editors (and designers) have obviously taken note–the number of full-fledged fashion editorials she’s been in since she started promoting Somewhere is pretty astounding, but what’s almost more impressive is the quality of the editorials. They are all in well-respected publications, including many of the best fashion glossies from Jalouse to Lula to Vogue. And speaking of the latter, a little birdy told us she will be making an appearance in the pages of Vogue’s August issue with her sister Dakota. In Vogue twice in one year? We see a cover in her future…

Without further ado, click through for just about all of Elle’s spreads from the past year. (We couldn’t pick the best, because they are seriously all good.)

Casting is an integral part of the show process because it doesn’t matter how major the clothes are if the models wearing them are weak. Casting is very subjective, so what is a good casting for one show isn’t always good for another. It’s really important for a stylist and designer to know what kind of character they are after before they start the casting process. If they don’t know, the casting ends up diluted and all over the place. Casting your “cabine” of models is like choosing your ultimate clients. The models should reflect (at least in looks) the kind of person a designer actually wants to wear the clothes. A model can “turn” an outfit more preppy, or more sexy or more edgy. So being aware of how the model will change the looks is crucial. For Antonio’s show, we always go for an artistic aristocrat kind of look: the guy who loves art and went to boarding school but isn’t scared to go see a band play in a dirty Lower East Side club. I like to create a story like that about the character because it makes it easier for me to figure out which models fit. That being said, sometimes we meet a model we are super inspired by, and will change the whole casting to be based on the model’s own character and personality.

Montreal is known for many things–Cirque du Soleil, bagels sweetened with honey, Stanley Cups, and festivals. It is also known for its heavy French influence, so naturally, the fashion is good.

While in Montreal for the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit last week, I took some time to check out the city’s thriving fashion scene. Montreal is full of great vintage shops known as “friperies” and high-end department stores like Holt Renfrew. Saint Catherine Street is lined with retail stores akin to New York’s SoHo. The style of the city dwellers is laid back with a touch of that signature Parisian chic.

Montreal is also home to some amazing designers. I got a chance to visit the boutiques of three of the city’s finest local brands–Harricana Par Mariouche, Denis Gagnon, and Marie Saint Pierre.

Running what’s arguably the most important menswear trade show in the world isn’t a tiny task, but that doesn’t fluster Pitti Immagine CEO Raffaello Napoleone. He even took time to speak with us during the fair, which took place in Florence last week. We chatted about the history of Pitti, why he chose two Los Angeles-based designers to lead this season’s program, and where to go in Florence for a bit of peace and quiet.
