We’ve loved Liv Tyler since the “Crazy” video and Empire Records, but, save for her amazing ’90s style in both, we’ve always found her sartorial choices a little…safe. However, she has been seriously stepping it up lately. From the amazing Proenza fall 2011 dress she wore to the CFDAs to the sleek Stella McCartney number she just showed up to a premiere in, the actress has been making some pretty exceptional outfit choices. No wonder–we hear she’s been having a little help from stylist Annabel Tollman, who has worked with Jessica Simpson and Scarlett Johansson and other celebs.

In the past, Liv has claimed that she doesn’t typically use a stylist. She has worked a bit with Rachel Zoe–she even made a guest appearance on an episode of The Rachel Zoe Project, where she had Zoe help her shop for every day clothes. Ironically, Tollman is set to star in her own Bravo reality show this fall.

All we know is Liv doesn’t seem to have made one red carpet mistake over the past few months, plus, is it just us or has she been looking unusually svelte? Here’s a look at Liv’s best recent looks.

We were sad to see Brooklyn-based fashion brand Octopi say goodbye last year, but luckily for us co-designer Sarah Welsh Elliott has been plenty busy since she and Madeline Davy closed up shop.

Her new project? Welsh Elliott Modernism, an e-commerce site stocked with vintage jewelry carefully selected by the designer. Octopi had its own range of graphic, modern jewelry, so it’s no surprise Welsh Elliott’s eye is so sharp. Here, you’ll find Robert Lee Morris, Givenchy, and Pierre Cardin, as well as collectable mid-century Scandinavian and Mexican artists.

Check Out Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter 2011 Ad Campaign

Wednesday, Jun 22, 2011 / 1:00 PM

We are loving Jil Sander‘s graphic, cinematic new ad campaign. We just received images for both ready-to wear and eyewear, which star Daria Strokus, who also starred in the label’s Spring campaign, and newcomer Guerrino Santulliana, who just walked in the Spring/Summer 2012 show in Milan. Art directed by Raf Simons and shot by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign is colorful, but still very Fall-like. It’s simple, as is typical of Jil Sander, but still makes an impact. In Defense Of Our Criticized Sao Paulo Fashion Week Post: Our own Leah Chernikoff has received some backlash from Brazil this week for her post, “The Top Ten Most Outrageous Looks From Sao Paulo Fashion Week”–apparently lots of people didn’t see it for what it was: fun and silly. The blog Made in Brazil has come to her defense, citing the many favorable reviews Chernikoff wrote about the designers seen during the week. {Made in Brazil}

So, you’ve probably heard that Prada, the Italian luxury goods company owned and operated by designer Miuccia Prada and her husband, CEO Patrizio Bertelli, finally went public last week and will officially begin trading shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this Friday, June 24.

This is a huge deal, not only because there are very few public luxury goods companies (LVMH, PPR, Richemont, Burberry, and Hermes are the big ones), but because Prada chose the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to stage its IPO. We talked to some of our favorite fashion-meets-finance professionals about the significance of this event.

The Banana Republic/Mad Men marketing partnership is one of the smartest things Gap, Inc. has done strategy-wise over the last five years. Now the two entities are taking their collaboration a step further, creating an actual collection inspired by the hit television series.

“Working with Janie [Bryant, Mad Men's costume designer] to gain a true understanding of the Mad Men look and feel was a delight,” Banana Republic Creative Director Simon Kneen said in a statement. “Janie was instrumental in helping us achieve the series aesthetic and standard of authenticity with this capsule collection.”

Former Vogue senior accessories editor Filipa Fino has been getting a decent amount of attention since WWD announced her departure from the magazine on Monday. The little blurb WWD included about Fino’s alleged “inappropriate behavior” that was subsequently taken out was what really got bloggers talking. In case you were wondering how Filipa feels about all this attention, she loves it! And she’s so excited to be freed from the clutches of Vogue so she can do her own thing. At around 7pm last night she tweeted:

Can’t believe attn I’m getting! lol After 11 years I’m flying solo. So excited abt new co FFConsulting. Stay tuned. More to come.

Filipa, who is going to have to change her Twitter handle (@FFVogue), didn’t waste any time before announcing a new, albeit predictable, venture: consulting. Her husband, restauranteur Stratis Morfogen, also has Twitter and offered his support for his “wifey”:

John Galliano is set to stand trial today in Paris on charges of public insult.

According to reports in various outlets, Galliano’s defense will likely argue that the designer’s struggle with addiction made him “ill.” Galliano reportedly entered rehab in Arizona shortly after he was dismissed from Dior and his eponymous line in March.

“One obvious thing is that John Galliano was ill,” his lawyer Aurelien Hamelle said, according to the Telegraph. “He had a triple addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepine (Valium) and sleeping pills … The combined effect of these drugs is a state of complete and utter abandon.”

Hamelle went on to tell say that Galliano took Valium “like candy” to cope with the pressure of his job.

Fashion is always doomed to repeat itself… though “doomed” may be too strong a word. Every season brings endless inspiration and comparisons from decades past. Though it may still feel like yesterday, enough time has passed in fashion years for the 1990s to be considered ripe for the picking. It should come as no surprise, then, that this decade has been back with a vengeance as inspiration for the past few seasons.

Over the past year we’ve seen androgyny, minimalism, and grunge and it’s made us a bit nostalgic. To commemorate this resurgence, we’ve compiled some our favorite ’90s campaigns.

Take a look.

Tucker Blair is a Washington, D.C.-based line of uber-preppy needlepoint belts and headbands–the kind worn by women named Muffy who summer in Martha’s Vineyard and bear lacrosse-playing children. Blair’s wares are certainly cute, but perhaps not the first line one would consider fitting in with Opening Ceremony. A store that features stuff by Chloe Sevigny and Alexander Wang hardly screams Cape Cod.

But that’s the brilliance of Opening Ceremony. Needlepoint belts and Band of Outsiders blazers sit seamlessly with Delfina Delettrez jewelry and Nicholas Kirkwood shoes.

Comprised of five hand-sewn leather belts, this unisex line is totally wearable.
