Sao Paulo might not be one of the big four fashion cities, but when it comes to swimwear, Brazil is second to none. Brazilians dress for the beach like it’s the red carpet–the suits here are just as glitzy and glamorous as evening gowns, only much (much) more revealing (they don’t call it the Brazilian wax for nothing). Many labels showed last week at Fashion Rio, and more showed this past week at Sao Paulo fashion week.

As one Brazilian fashion writer put it, swimwear is Brazil’s haute couture. Here’s why. (Also if you need any motivation to go to the gym, this is it.)

This week there were two appropriately summery parties to launch the new eyewear collections of two iconic American brands. Tommy Hilfiger celebrated its first foray into eyewear–and its yearlong 25th anniversary–with a party at the James Hotel in NYC and a movie dedicated to surfers. Oliver Peoples hosted an intimate gathering of bloggers who were invited to hang out with founder Larry Leight, try on sunglasses, and eat fancy barbecue.

Did you ever wonder how Oliver Peoples, now owned by Luxottica, got its name?

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy, in a move sure to delight fashion-lovers and Francophiles alike, is continuing their style-centric Breakfast at 972 panel series—the same one that saw us chatting it up with Olivier Theyskens about a month ago.

Yesterday morning’s speaker? None other than super-cobbler Pierre Hardy, he of the skyscraper geometric wedges and to-die-for Gap collabs.

In addition to designing his eponymous accessories label and working with the aforementioned all-American high street store, Hardy’s spent over two decades as the Creative Director of men’s and women’s footwear at Hermès, where he later put his stamp on the house’s jewelry. Add to that his responsibilities as Balenciaga’s resident shoe designer, and it’s a wonder that the bespectacled cobbler still finds time to serve as a teacher and mentor to art/design students on a weekly basis!

Here are some of the choice takeaways from the morning’s chat, which was once again moderated by Charlotte Sarkozy and Timothée Verrecchia:

Model Kate King is only 17, but she’s already taking over the runways. During the fall 2011 season (her first) she was a must-have for every big designer, including Prada, Louis Vuitton, Lanvin, and Marc Jacobs. She’s already landed editorial gigs with Russh, Wonderland, and Dossier, was named among the top new models on every site, from COACD to Models.com, but her success hasn’t gone to her head.

Click through and hear about Kate’s journey to super-stardom in her own words.

As much as Prabal may have deserved it, I have to admit I was a little bummed that Joseph Altuzarra didn’t win the coveted Swarovski Award for Womenswear at this year’s CFDA‘s (he was our prediction). Of course, being nominated for something so prestigious is almost as significant as winning, and the loss clearly hasn’t hindered the designer in the least. Altuzarra presented his first ever resort collection this week and we got to get up close and personal with it at his showroom yesterday. That after a mere two years in the biz, he is able to do a full resort collection is a testament to Altuzarra’s talent and inevitable continued success, especially given how awesome this collection is.

If Persol had one goal in mind for Magnificent Obsessions, an exhibition to to commemorate the Italian eyewear magnate’s longstanding relationship with painstakingly- crafted film, it was go big or go home. This was evident from the get-go when ascending to Centre 548’s 4th floor in a Warholian-era industrial lift for the exhibit’s opening celebration. A set of double doors opened to reveal a gallery space filled with cinematic memorabilia and a crowd that was half celebrity, half society.

Curated by the celebrated Michael Connor, the exhibit is the initial offering in a series three installments and is open to the public starting today through Sunday in West Chelsea. There you’ll find footage of The Darjeeling Limited’s Adrien Brody racing through train cars in custom frames, Oscar-winning costumes from Marie Antoinette, and perhaps most prolific—scenes from Ghandi with its transformative star and honoree, Ben Kingsley offering exclusive commentary. “I think its great to join in a collection of personal creation,” he said of the exhibit.

British supermodel Naomi Campbell is working on a denim collection for Italian fashion brand Fiorucci, Sassybella reports. The collection is rumored to be debuting during Milan Men’s Fashion Week, which starts tomorrow.

We’re not at all surprised that Campbell is designing; however, it’s an odd collaboration for a couple of reasons, the first being that Fiorucci hasn’t really been relevant for decades. Since seeing success in the ’70s and early ’80s, the brand has suffered through mismanagement, legal battles and, eventually, several failed relaunches. Perhaps this is a sign of change for Fiorucci, which was recently acquire by Italian company Ittierre, who currently holds licenses for Balmain’s second line, CNC Costume National and Galliano, among others (although, those brands don’t exactly seem to be riding the waves of success these days either).

La Prairie, purveyor of very covetable skin care, also has a color makeup line, which not a lot of people realize. As you would expect from the luxury brand, the color line is upscale and posh. You won’t see yellow eye shadow here.

To help raise awareness of the brand’s makeup collection, La Prairie partnered with makeup artist and founder of Cheek to Chic, Raychel Wade. Raychel created her first (of hopefully many–a holiday collection is already in the works) collection for the brand, called Bouquet de Jardin, which was inspired by peonies.

The collection is saturated and gorgeous, yet is formulated to work on a lot of skin tones. It includes two cream blushes which contain vitamins and chamomile, a hybrid kohl eye pencil in a perfect shade of bronze, a rosy quartz eye shadow quad, and a pink lip definer.

Raychel sat down with us to share some helpful tips for how to manage your makeup bag and what tricks to use for summer makeup application:

SAO PAULO–Gloria Coelho is one of the doyenne’s of Brazil’s fashion scene (also the ex-wife of Reinaldo Lourenço and mother of Pedro Lourenço). She presented her spring 2012 collection yesterday which she called “Spiritual Psychedelic.”

Before I get into the clothes, Coelho’s line sheet merits quoting:
“After 184 years Neptune enters Pisces upon returning to its home, the deep sea, resstablishing the universal love, compassion, solidarity and fantasies dissolving the rigidness of concrete and infinite. By shuffling the mind and giving a lysergic air to everything it touches, we created clothes with energy of love and healing intension, clothes that heal.” Coelho says she looked to “1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 2011 and X-Men” for inspiration (yes, X-Men is a year). As for colors, the collection uses “colors from the sixties,” and “Pokemon colors.”

As you can imagine, after reading Coelho’s line sheet (and I had plenty of time to do so seeing as how her show was nearly two hours late), I was intrigued to see the clothes. And despite the wacky descriptions and inspiration, the clothes were pretty great.
