If there’s one thing Jean Paul Gaultier hates, it’s convention. That’s why the famously dubbed ‘l’enfant terrible’ is a great designer. For 35 years and 150 collections, Gaultier has delighted, shocked, and inspired the world with his imaginative and eccentric creations.

Finally, this summer, the French designer is getting the recognition he deserves. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has honored Gaultier with his first international exhibit, opening today.

Earlier this week I journeyed up to the Canadian city that Gaultier remembers as one of the first to embrace his work (“the French are always snobbish,” he joked), for pre-opening festivities and a sneak peek at the exhibit.

The thoughtfully curated, “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” is not to be missed.

“First I didn’t want to make an exhibition because for me it was a funeral,” said Gaultier at a press conference Tuesday. So in agreeing to do the exhibit, the designer had certain requests.

Lady Gaga premiered her latest music video last night on So You Think You Can Dance (or was supposed to, and it apparently got cut off or something? I don’t watch that show). Regardless, it’s all over the internet today. There is something weirdly ’80s/low-budget/tame about the stripped down video, but what really separates it from past Gaga videos is the lack of outfit changes–in fact, there are none–Gaga wears the same revealing studded black leather vintage Versace number throughout. Granted, it is a pretty special piece–we have it confirmed, and are surprised to hear, that this is the first time Donatella has ever opened her archives to collaborate on a music video. Donatella said of the collaboration: Read more »

Nothing like ending the week with a new OPI collection and a cocktail.

OPI was just named the official nail care sponsor of the Miss Universe pageant. To celebrate, the company wants you to find your inner beauty queen with its latest line of polishes, the Miss Universe collection. It’s a four color collection and includes: Congeniality is my Middle Name (berry-wine shimmer), It’s MY Year (champagne rose), Swimsuit…Nailed It! (shiny blue), and Crown Me Already! (silver sparkle). As befits a pageant, none of these are subtle, and they all have a heavy dose of shimmer. They’re available at the beginning of August and go for $8.50 each.

If you’re like us, it’s been a really long week and you probably need a cocktail. We can’t think of anything better than combining a drink with a manicure.

Peter Pilotto‘s Pre-Spring 2012 look book recently hit our inboxes and we are kind of in love. Unlike many of the resort shows we’ve seen this week, Pilotto and Christopher De Vos did not give us a single shred of black, white or neutral. Everything is a bright spectrum of primary colors and aside from a blue pantsuit and pair of yellow trousers, every piece is a print. We always admire when a designer doesn’t stay completely safe with a resort collection, and this is an example of that. Still, despite the boldness of the at times clashing prints, the silhouettes are all pretty classic and wearable, including various short shifts, A-line skirts and dresses (with pockets!), pencil skirts and tailored trousers. It’s a very juicy day for fragrance today. From Galliano to Mariah Carey, everyone has some scent news to report.

Will Galliano’s Perfume Survive?: First up, it seems that Galliano’s fragrance, whose sales took a nosedive after the scandal hit this past winter, is rebounding. While Galliano’s second fragrance, Parlez-Moi d’Amour, launched in Europe last fall, the company has held off on its US launch, which was supposed to happen this spring. In obvious markets like Israel, WWD reports that the scent took a hit. Certain retailers in Germany and the UK were also reluctant to stock it. But now it seems that the industry has a short memory and retailers, who point to the quality of the fragrance and popularity with consumers, are willing to sell it again.

For their site-specific event at Pitti Immagine, which took place last night, the Rodarte sisters–Kate and Laura Mulleavy–chose an empty building in central Florence. This served as a space for 10 couture-quality gowns, inspired by Fra Angelico’s frescoes in the monks’ cells at the Convent of San Marco, as well as Bernini’s The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. The tiny rooms–set up like cells–featured strobe lights and classical music such as “Pachelbel’s Canon,” setting a solemn, intense mood. The Mulleavys worked with longtime collaborator, designer Alexandre de Betak, to build the installation.

The capsule, created in Los Angeles, stands apart from the designers’ other collections. “It’s completely separate,” Laura said at a press preview yesterday morning. “We wanted to include what we love about the city, about the fashion.”

We all know there’s a lot of unnecessary beauty products out there. The beauty of beauty, however, is that everyone has a different need. You may never use an eyelash curler, but your best friend may feel absolutely lost without it. The beauty industry can always convince someone that they need SOMETHING.

That being said, we can conclusively say that no one needs any of the following items. From your pubes to your dog, these products and trends are completely ridiculous. (Of course, who ever thought people would be putting toxins into their faces to get rid of wrinkles?) Click through to check them out:

A while back we did a post about crazy Internet nail art, an example of our endless fascination with our fingertips. The photo that sparked the original article was of a masterfully detailed set of Twin Peaks-themed nails by artist Ally Picard of Portland Oregon. The down-to-Earth artist recently took a trip east and brought the tools of her trade to meet me at Bryant Park for a manicure and a little discussion on self-nail art, including how to get started and the best affordable products for the best recession-friendly activity.

How did you get into nail art?

For all those mourning the recent shuttering of their favorite Lower East Side boutiques (Annie Havlicek, In God We Trust, we’re looking at you), rest assured that the area’s still yielding exciting new “shopportunities.” Last night, we celebrated the opening of Blake Scotland’s eponymous, intimate Clinton Street shop with cucumber gin and tonics and some great company. “I worked in fashion PR for two years in London, “ Scotland told us of her fashion background–and that press experience came in handy when she began recruiting labels with which to stock her store. Of the boutique’s mix of casual-cool pieces, she explained, “I just was thinking about things I love to wear. There are no American designers here—it ironically wound up being a lot of European brands, a lot of Australian labels. It wasn’t planned that way, but I wanted to bring back some of that [international] style and sensibility. Everything’s a little more dressed-up, a little more buttoned-up, and that’s really attractive.” Among the Aussie labels on offer? One Teaspoon, Saint Augustine Academy, and Ksubi. The back wall of Super sunglasses shouldn’t be missed, either, and proved a particular hit with partygoers.

I have a new obsession. Orla Kiely’s namesake ready-to-wear line seems to have shamefully few fans in the U.S., though I can’t imagine that will be the case for much longer. The label seems to have a strong following in the UK where it is based, made evident by the Brit-heavy crowd at Tuesday night’s party for the designer at the Ace Hotel’s Liberty Hall, which included The Like’s Tennessee Thomas, Giles Deacon and soon-to-be divorcée Karen Elson. (P.S. a little birdy told us that “divorce party” didn’t actually happen.) Read more »
