Ever since Kate Middleton’s engagement to Prince William was announced we’ve scrutinized every sartorial choice she’s made. Without a doubt, she knocked it out of the park on her wedding day, looking flawless in Sarah Burton for McQueen. But beyond the big day, the Duchess of Cambridge tends to play it safe–conservative, appropriate, accessible. She wears high street pieces that are figure flattering in solid colors, and more often than not, she pairs her simple dresses and jeans with those LK Bennett wedges. “Conservative, appropriate and accessible” aren’t exactly the descriptors we’d use to describe many of the stylish ladies we fawn over on Fashionista. We’re always hoping the Duchess will take a little risk and prove us wrong today she did, wowing in a shimmering Jenny Packham gown at the 10th Annual ARK Gala Dinner at Kensington Palace.

The Duchess may dress down in wedges and Zara when she’s out running errands, but she’s proving event after formal event now that she can gussy up with the best of them–Michelle Obama included. Take a look at her style evolution since her engagement was officially announced.

Earlier this week, some sort of huge photo/video shoot happened in London involving Duran Duran, Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, Harper’s Bazaar UK and super models Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Eva Herzigova and Yasmin Le Bon (wife Duran Duran’s Simon). The next day, Duran Duran’s John Taylor tweeted “I’m coming down from a glamour overdose. I’ve a glamover” and Harper’s Bazaar UK‘s Lucy Yeomans tweeted, “This has to have been one of the most extraordinary days of my life. A little bit of fashion history made!”

We first found out that a supermodel-y Duran Duran video was in the works a few weeks ago when Naomi was rumored to be rounding up a group of supermodel friends for them. The actual shoot was in London, not the South of France, as was rumored (unless another part of the shoot took place there). Also, Kate Moss, who was rumored to be taking part, did not seem to be involved with this week’s shoot, unfortunately.

Lucky for us, just about everyone who was involved in the supershoot is a ferocious internet oversharer and, thanks to Fashionologie‘s trolling, we already have pictures and a few details of what will culminate in, at least, a serialized viral music video for Duran Duran’s single “Girl Panic” and a Harper’s Bazaar UK cover shoot.

Through the hallowed halls of The Lambs Club we went, off to see Gaby Basora’s latest Tucker offerings. The rich-with-faux-history space provided a surprising contrast when paired with her cheery clothes, leading us to think that Zoe Kravitz or some similar rock-star offspring was about to pop out from behind the racks. It’s this bohemian yet intelligently flirtatious vibe that’s found Basora a boatload of fans. Her signature off-kilter prints have paved the way for what’s becoming the Tucker lifestyle, and from the looks of her holiday line, shown yesterday, this is only the beginning. While simple in silhouette, Basora is a purveyor of what most cool women want–interestingly detailed clothes with the perfect amount of panache. Nary of pretension and full of personality, her holiday textiles are a quirky mix of oriental and Victorian references–perhaps alluding to the British conquest of Hong Kong during the era, a feat that Basora is similarly seeking to accomplish, albeit for fashion rather than opium. “It’s a very special point of view, our take on more fanciful fabrics,” she said of the collection’s gold-embroidered silks.

Miha is a new contemporary label based in New York. Named after the Spanish term of endearment, “my daughter,” Miha is in its second season and so far, we are kind of in love with it. Available at Nordstrom (and, not surprisingly, generating interest from other major department stores), Miha is not the first label to create chic, grungy wears for cool girls, but they are doing so with interesting details and construction on a sophisticated level that makes them worth watching.

The brand’s Holiday collection, called “English Rose,” channels Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie, combined with the dandyism of Oscar Wilde. For each piece, one bold shape, print or texture is taken as far as it can go before crossing the fine line between fun and completely over the top.

OK, we know that Solange is Beyoncé’s younger sister. She’s been compared to her a lot, as is the case with any siblings–their comparisons just happen to take place in the spotlight of the media. Solange has had a moderately successful music and acting career.

She’s dabbled in modeling, as the face of Armani Jeans, and for her family’s clothing line, House of Deréon. She got married at the age of 17, had a child, and ultimately got divorced; all this personal drama certainly affected her career a bit. She’s never really come out from her sister’s shadow…until recently.

Solange’s look has changed dramatically, first of all. She used to favor long soft diva locks, lots of makeup, and pretty dresses. She skews decidedly more hipster lately: natural hair in a giant afro, less makeup, playing up her less-hourglass-than-Beyoncé’s frame. It seems to be working, because the industry has come calling.

Apparently, Gossip Girl isn’t the only thing shot at the Empire Hotel. Chuck Bass’s stomping grounds is also a prime locale for photo shoots, like the Rolling Stone cover shoot we stopped by last Friday. But will that cover ever hit newsstands? Well, you decide.

For the first time ever, Rolling Stone is putting their Choose the Cover competition in readers’ hands. One of two emerging artists—either The Sheepdogs or Lelia Broussard, who we hung with last week—will win not only their very own magazine cover but also a major record deal with Atlantic.

But while the prizes are up totally up to voters, the cover shoot styling was left to the professionals. So we swung by the set to see what it’s like creating an image for someone who doesn’t yet have one (ie. not Bieber, or Bieber 2.0) and to see if the behind the scenes action really is all smiles, rainbows, and cover subjects eating cheeseburgers in blue jeans, like those front-of-book blurbs so diligently report.

Tracy Reese was feeling nostalgic Wednesday night as she celebrated her flagship’s five year anniversary. “I remember when we had our opening party,” Reese said. “I was trying to put things to bed at the office to get down here for the party but I got here 15 minutes late. Then it turned out that Anna Wintour got here 15 minutes earlier and totally was leaving as I walked in the door! I just still can’t believe I wasn’t there when she got here,” she confessed.

Clearly, Reese has come a long way since her self-described fashion faux pas, with a client list including celebs from Alicia Keys to Michelle Obama. “I still have a total freak out when I see Michelle wearing my clothes,” she said.

Well, it’s another day of talking about inappropriate beauty and fashion for little girls who should be worrying about how to read and whether or not they can tie their shoes. (Speaking of shoes, Suri Cruise–who is five–reportedly owns $150,000 worth, including custom made Louboutins. She’s also been snapped carrying tiny versions of bags by Ferragamo and Dolce & Gabbana.)

Then there’s Botox Mom, who thankfully didn’t give her daughter Botox, and now Human Barbie mom, who gave her seven-year-old daughter a voucher for breast implants. (Fingers crossed that one’s a hoax, too.) And let’s not forget makeup and Skechers for eight-year-olds. There’s something slightly creepy and disconcerting about tiny girls doing grown-up things, and we’re hearing more and more about it lately.

“I mean, is it really that different when it’s a skinny white woman in a bathing suit singing these things? None of these women ever wear pants, first of all. Second of all, just because you’re wearing a goofy hat doesn’t make it performance art. I mean, that’s just my feeling about it. A lot of the music just sounds like bad Euro disco, though that first Ke$ha song “TiK ToK” was good. But (Katy Perry’s) “I Kissed a Girl” was just straight-up offensive. The whole thing is like, I kissed a girl so my boyfriend could masturbate about it later. It’s disgusting. It’s exactly every male fantasy of fake lesbian porn. It’s pathetic. And she’s not a good singer. I don’t want to trash other women.”

Dylan Lauren’s Wedding Dress Will Be Amazing: Her father, Ralph, consulted wedding-dress-whisperer Vera Wang to create the gown, which is currently under top secret protection. It reportedly has one over-the-shoulder strap, embroidery at the bottom and a “little fishtail hem”. Lauren will accent it with Cartier jewels and a “very long antique lace veil.” I’m honestly more excited for this than I was for Kate Middleton’s. {NY Daily News}

Sophie Theallet’s resort woman likes her suiting as she likes her sheets: made of fine silk, deliciously rumpled and falling off shoulders. For the 2012 collection, Theallet channeled that innate French girl ability to appear impeccably put together from the moment she hopped out of bed. She waves both her Parisian and American flags with the navy, crème and deep pink palette and sportswear sets that are tweaked just so; a baseball-jacket-style cardigan over tailored white shorts says U.S.A., while her French shines through in slouching jackets over trousers. There’s an especially wonderful red-trimmed white blazer that hints at a cool evening on a yacht, the topper to nothing but a bikini and a tan. The most gorgeous pieces are the down-to-there silk shirts, like half of a wrap dress that begs to be undone. There are a few short pleated frocks, some playful button downs in prints of orange and pink or navy and white–the resortwear staple–but the stand-out dresses are the longer gowns, slinky yet flattering. This is not a skintight bandage affair. A navy, one-shoulder sheath positively drips down the curves of the body, as does a raspberry silk number with shoulders peeking from small cut-outs in the short sleeves. This is a woman who can both take and bring the heat with equal nonchalance, producing equal amounts of desire and jealousy. Click through to view the collection.
