LE BOOK, the international reference for the creative industry, announces the release of its 2011 New York edition, curated by Tamra Davis (director of the recently released film tribute to BASQUIAT, THE RADIANT CHILD), art direction by Shepard Fairey’s STUDIO NUMBER ONE, and dressed by one of the most recognizable artists of the twentieth century, graffiti artist and neo-expressionist painter, JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT (1960 – 1988).

At an early age, BASQUIAT demonstrated an interest in art that was nurtured and encouraged by his parents. At the age of 16, BASQUIAT attended City-As-School where he met fellow artist Al Diaz. Together, they began collaborating and spray-painting the cryptic aphorisms signed SAMO©, based on a fictional character created by BASQUIAT, so recognized on subway trains and in lower Manhattan in the late seventies.

In December of 1981, the first major article on BASQUIAT, entitled “The Radiant Child,” was published. After that article, BASQUIAT quickly became a known-name, and tastemakers of the time collected and promoted his work. His art was featured in the group show Transavanguardia: Italia/America” along with Neo-Expressionists Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, David Deutsch, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel.

Always a collector’s item, LE BOOK New York 2011, showcases BASQUIAT’s vibrant vision as well as his life as an urban artist who was able to capture and expose the essence of the world around him all while sharing his particular perspective. LE BOOK is extremely pleased to play a part in preserving BASQUIAT’s legacy and to share his compelling and enduring works with an ever-growing audience.

For over 25 years, LE BOOK has defined itself as the go-to resource for the global creative community. With its New York, Paris, London, Berlin and West Coast editions, LE BOOK sources all needs related to image creation and branding while showcasing the world’s most inspirational talent.

Kanye West seemed pretty relaxed last night at the CFDA Awards after party, just shooting the shit with friends like GQ‘s Jim Moore and Adam Kimmel. Kanye was even nice to us when we sidled up to him and asked a couple of questions. “Here’s the thing, I don’t do quotes.” So, is he really designing his own line? “[Smile.] I don’t do quotes.” Uhuh.

Luckily, there were other partygoers willing to dish on the collection, set to launch in October in Paris. “Oh, he’s definitely doing it. But you didn’t here that from me!” said one industry insider.

So it’s looking like the rumors are true, but of course we’ll have to wait a while longer for a confirmation from Mr. West.

Best Dressed: CFDA Awards

Tuesday, Jun 7, 2011 / 11:31 AM

There may be no event that draws a more well-dressed crowd than the annual CFDA Awards. The look was sophisticated and understated (unless you were Lady Gaga) and we were especially fond of the sleek suiting and black & white looks of these five ladies. Everyone’s favorite Vogue editor Grace Coddington’s red hair stood out against her black Prada dress. Kirsten looked great in a blue-lapeled Patrik Ervel suit with Bulgari jewelry, of course. International Award recipient Phoebe Philo can do no wrong in her own label. Leelee Sobieski looked perfect and timeless in an Adam Kimmel suit and the equally cool Chloe Sevigny made black & white interesting with a little leather.

Last night’s CFDA Awards were a decidedly star-studded affair, what with Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Sofia Coppola, Jessica Alba, Gerard Butler, Naomi Watts, and host Anderson Cooper spending time on the stage. Cooper had to leave early because of “that Weiner thing,” or so Diane von Furstenberg said, but otherwise the audience received plenty of face time with their star of choice–there were even a couple of moments when one could forget this was, you know, a fashion industry event. But only a couple.

I love the DvF label when it’s a smart interpretation of top trends. I loathe the DvF label when it’s all about boho chic.

Luckily, the fashion gods were on my side at yesterday’s presentation of the Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2012 collection, shown in front of a glow-in-the-dark backdrop at the Highline Studios on 15th Street.

Lady Gaga received the Fashion Icon award at last night’s CFDA Fashion Awards ceremony, and her outfit didn’t disappoint, at least from a visual shock value perspective. She wore a custom Mugler outfit and 24-inch heel-less platforms. The long train on the Mugler proved to be removable, because she accepted her award on stage in a bodysuit with a spiked thong. The bustier was precariously placed, and she managed to flash some nipple on the purple carpet, which we highly doubt was accidental. Read more »

As if it wasn’t hard enough to just look stylish and not semi-poor at [insert place of work], today you have to attend an event after the usual 10-6 shift. Exciting? Sure. But now you have to dress up without looking out of place in the office. This means heels. But you can’t wear them all day and you don’t want to lug them around in a big purse at said event and look like a bag lady, rather than one of the stylites who belong there (i.e. were invited and aren’t just taking the place of a boss). Shit. Time to utilize that “high/low dressing”… only it’s a little different when your low is $2 faux pearls from Salvation Army and your high means something not purchased from a sale rack at Urban Outfitters. You settle for your roommates cool yet surprisingly comfy wedges and jazz up a dress with all necklaces you own and your mother’s vintage Gucci belt, the only nice designer thing actually in your possession and which bestows, with it’s tiny one-silver-one-gold interlocking G’s, a semblance of subtle monied style.

With the much anticipated arrival of summer comes a bittersweet moment as well: The iconic Charing Cross building of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design (or CSM) is set to shut its historic (and heavy, might I add!) doors at the close of the season, through which have passed some of the most prolific talents in fashion, fine art, film and music: Alexander McQueen, Peter Doig, Sarah Burton, Hussein Chalayan, Hamish Bowles, Anthony Gormley, and M.I.A to name a few.

The beloved, well-worn building is, as CSM puts it, is “not easily adapted to keep up with fast changing technology and industry.” It may not be shiny or new–call it stubborn–but some of us like it just the way it is. It has history and charm, which I was fortunate enough to experience while studying Fine Art there for three years. Yes, I may have found myself painting in a puffy down jacket in the dead of winter due to the unreliable heating system in the 3rd floor studios, but that just helped justify lots of tea breaks and Lady Sovereign impersonations.

Pour La Victoire is one of those brands that we see from time to time in stores, and like, but don’t really see in the press or know much about. The always cute and affordable shoe and handbag brand is aiming to change all that with the launch of their first-ever ad campaign and e-commerce site, both of which are seriously striking our fancy.

The Fall 2011 campaign was styled by Beth Fenton and shot by stylist-turned-photographer Frances Tulk Hart at the glamorous St. Regis hotel in NYC. We’ve never gotten the urge to stand in front of a hotel fire place in red pumps, underwear and a blazer, holding a bunch of leather bags, but after seeing these shots, it seems that nothing could be more glamorous and fall-like. Click through for our favorite images and go here to shop the spring collection.

There’s no doubting fashion labels are pretty obsessed with their Facebook pages, from DKNY’s pre-order opportunities to Dolce & Gabbana’s live streaming.

But according to data compiled by fashion marketing firm Stylophane, Vera Wang might take the cake for most active fashion brand on Facebook.
