And we thought Lady Gaga’s cheek prothetics were weird. Vice mag unearthed a strange trend that has hit Japan and is right out of a bad sci-fi movie.

People are injecting saline into their foreheads to make the skin bubble. The process takes about two hours, and looks absolutely horrifying. To achieve the “bagel-head” look, they press a finger in the center of the bubble during the infusion. The look only lasts for one night.

The process was brought to Japan by journalist Ryoichi Maeda who has been documenting extreme body modification (apparently, it’s a big underground scene) there since 1992.

While just modeling seems to be professionally fulfilling enough for some, others like to take on side projects, or maybe they’re just trying to come up with a back up plan for when they become too old to model. Jessica Stam, despite being one of the most sought after and successful models out there, is one who likes to keep herself busy.

She’s gone the design route, which wasn’t too surprising–collaborating with both Rachel Roy and Rag & Bone on capsule collections. And now she’s writing a column for Huffington Post Canada–not something we would have necessarily predicted. Perhaps the Ontario-bred model was inspired by fellow Canadian Coco Rocha’s turn at broadcast journalism with hosting gigs for MTV Canada and ET Canada.

Coco: “Shoe Freak” Radio Edit Clip by IceLovesCocoFan

Somebody finally thought to give awesome couple Ice-T and Coco an awesome reality TV show, Ice Loves Coco. Coco has always had her own distinct style, which is getting a lot more exposure now that she’s on TV. She’s obviously a fashion lover and now she’s using music to express that love. In her first single, “Shoe Freak,” Coco simply lists shoe designers that she likes–in a breathy sexy voice, of course. Only a short excerpt of the single has hit the internet and in that minute she lists 16 shoe designers, including: Read more »

PARIS–It was only a few days ago that I was emailing with a fashion journalist for a major daily newspaper who was in Milano covering the men’s shows. I was commenting on the irony of the reporter’s succinct observations that many of the designers showing their spring collections in Milano substituted inspirations–say a moment of past history or a image of an individual who capture a style of a certain era–for any real design innovations. The response to one of my email was simple and so concise in its observation of the current stalemate one can sense in fashion: “When was the last time you saw an idea?” As a close observer of fashion over the years, I was unable to come up with any substantive answer. Thus the email remained without a reply and the conversation ceased.

As I left the Salle Marcel Cerdan at Bercy following Rick Owens’ menswear show, I instantly thought I might have an answer. Is it possible that I just saw an idea minutes before inside the concrete gymnasium where male models nonchalantly paraded a collection comprised of a variety of khaki cotton linen and striped long dresses, as well as single or double breasted jackets worn with long tee-shirts and long ankle puff skirts slit in the back?

In today’s “Kate Middleton–she’s just like us!” news, Grazia Daily is reporting that the Duchess of Cambridge is prepping her wardrobe for her upcoming North American tour with the help of personal shoppers at major UK retailers Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

It has already been reported that the Duchess has a policy of not accepting free clothes and won’t have a special clothing budget for the tour. And it’s obvious she doesn’t use a stylist, preferring to wear the same looks from high street brands like Reiss and Zara over and over again. Grazia is reporting that Kate is using one of the personal shoppers that William and Harry have gone to in the past for help with holiday shopping.

But since it’s Selfridges and Harvey Nichols we’re talking about–high end department stores–it’s likely we can expect to see some designer duds mixed in with her high street staples for Kate’s upcoming trip. We also know that Kate has struck up some private agreements with designers to help outfit her, and it seems Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen is one such designer.

The First Lady wrapped her week-long visit to South Africa yesterday in Cape Town, where she dropped to the floor to do push-ups with Archbishop Desmond Tutu at Cape Town Stadium for an event to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and teach kids the importance of physical activity. Of course, Mrs. O wasn’t wearing gym clothes to do push-ups with the Archbishop (she also played soccer with him). Read more »

PARIS–Sibling sister duo Tuomas and Anna created Laitinen in 2006 in their native Helsinki. Their style is a mix between soft prints, dark goth-ish references and sharp tailoring. This season, they are now only working on menswear “because a lot of women wear our clothes anyway–the lines were so close,” Tuomas told us. The collection, presented in a showroom in Paris’ Marais district, consists of suits produced with old-school Italian textile developers, and functional pieces reinterpreted with offbeat fabrics: football jerseys in paper thin silk and silver thread or hockey shorts made out of leather. “We like to rethink male archetypes and contemporary uniforms”, said Tuomas.

PARIS–Needless to remind you that Christian left Lacroix in 2009 due to financial difficulties, (which were mainly because of its costly couture line).

Last season, the house relaunched, led by Sacha Walckhoff, the founder’s assistant of 17 years, who had heavily contributed to just about every department of the brand.

Now working only through licenses, Lacroix launched a menswear collection last season that were miles away from Christian’s once theatrical designs: wearable, elegant, the former’s designer’s loudness appeared only in discreet touches, on linings and collars.

Last night in Lacroix’s flagship boutique in Paris’ left bank, Sacha presented a full-blow runway show, but a humble one nevertheless. The interior, currently going through renovations, had bare walls and floors, and felt like a chic squat party. On
the outside, a simple sign hung stating “Lacroix: work in progress.”
