Seven Questions for diNeila Designer Neila Granzoti Rudden

As New Yorkers, our access to fabulous beaches is limited and, as a result, so is the number of bikinis in our closets. The lifestyle of the perennially tanned, international beach-goer is one that is entirely foreign to me, but a lucky few were practically born into it. One of those people is swimwear designer Neila Granzoti Rudden, who was born and raised in Sao Paulo, where swimsuits are more or less a uniform. While it may shock no one that a Brazilian-raised beach bum became a swimwear designer, Neila’s cultural background and experiences are more diverse than that--and that wide range of influences shows in her designs. Her parents are Brazilian and Italian and she’s also lived in London, where she earned a degree in graphic design, and Milan, until she eventually came to New York to launch her collection. Now, her super-sexy bikinis are all over the latest Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and she just finished shooting diNeila’s next campaign in St. Bart’s with the line’s newest face--Sports Ilustrated model (and John Legend’s girlfriend) Christine fTeigan. We recently spoke with Neila to gain a glimpse into her fabulous life.

How do you keep swimwear new and fresh each season? Swimwear is such a small piece, so it’s hard to be innovative and come up with something new every year, but I try to do a lot of research. From fashion itself and fashion shows and magazines and travel, I always try to get something new from each person I meet or each magazine, each trip that I make and I try to make something new out of it. I always want to make one season more innovative than the last and I think that helps.

You’re going on vacation soon to Brazil. Can you give some advice on what essentials to pack for a fun beach vacation? Of course! I never travel without my sunglasses or swimsuit and I have this thermal water. I’m obsessed with thermal water and I bought this thermal water in Brazil from my dermatologist that has spf 30 in it. Because I don’t love applying lotion all the time, this thermal water’s like amazing and I would never go to the beach without that. I love my hat, my flowy dresses, a big bag where I can put everything and maybe a little wedge for after the beach, when we go for lunch. And a lip balm with spf.

Do you have a favorite swimsuit from your line that you always wear or do you like to mix it up? I do tend to wear the smaller ones from my line. I still love the

What’s next for diNeila? Right now, we're working on the 2012 collection and it’s so exciting for me because we are working with Christine Teigen and we just had the photo shoot in St. Bart’s and that went amazingly well, even better than we expected. Meeting her and getting to work with her was such a pleasure. Her energy was amazing and I’m such a quiet girl and having someone like that next to me was so inspiring. So, 2012 is very promising and Chrissy is the face of it and it’s inspired by St. Bart’s where we had the photo shoot. I made some trips to the island last year and that's where i was taking all my inspiration from and Chrissy Teigen just fit perfectly well, so that's what’s new.
