It’s a weird fangirl-ish thing to ask Amanda Brooks, Barney’s impeccably well-heeled and well-coiffed fashion director, about her hair. But enough people had told me they were “obsessed” with it so I sucked it up, channeled Emily Weiss at Into the Gloss, and asked her about her locks after we had finished chatting about $39,000 crocodile backpacks at Barneys launch event for The Row’s new luxury handbag line.
Brooks was caught a little off guard by the question, laughing at first, but then, in a very refreshingly down-to-earth way, delved into her surprisingly low maintenance hair care routine.
“I do my hair myself,” Brooks said. “I have to say, I have good hair–my dad gave me his hair.” Which, she confesses, is a blessing and a curse. “I have a lot of hair–which means I also have a lot of hair on my legs, so there is a pay off. I shave them don’t worry.”
And in keeping with fashion’s latest trend of not washing your hair, Brooks only washes it once a week. Though she’s been doing it for way longer than Proenza Schouler CEO Shirley Cook, who confessed to Into the Gloss that she had stopped washing her hair in March. Our writer tried it (inspired by Cook) and only lasted six days without washing.
“I’ve been washing my hair once a week since I was 22 so it doesn’t get greasy,” Brooks said. “I cut off all my hair when I was 22 and I started washing it once a week then and my hair got used to it. I mean it gets a little greasy on day six.”
As for those perfectly messy undone waves? Here’s the routine:
“My hair would look like a broom if I didn’t do things to it and I’ve just just learned over time that I like my hair best when I do it myself so what I do is I wash it once a week, I air dry it, and then I put a curling iron in five places [her she motions around her head in five places] and I don’t curl it all the way up. I use a 1 1/4 inch curling iron and I literally just curl the middle bit and I never curl from the very bottom. And then the rest of my hair is kind of messy and air dried. I don’t use any product.”
There you have it folks. The perfect Amanda Brooks ‘do. Now if only we could replicate her wardrobe…
