Left: Helmut Lang in Vogue Paris November 1989, Right: Reinaldo Lourenço Spring 2012

One of our favorite collections from Sao Paolo was Reinaldo Lourenço‘s. He said his collection, which featured several looks with cat silhouettes like the one above, was inspired by the play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. But, was that the only thing that inspired him to cover his girls’ girls with cat heads? We just came across this page on the blog Sighs and Whispers from the November 1989 issue of Vogue Paris in which the model dons a very similar-looking cat bustier bodysuit by Helmut Lang. Name: Meret

Age: 22

Occupation: Intern at the Swiss Institute

Where are you from originally? Switzerland.

How would you describe your style? I like to mix everything, and I’m more of a pants person.

Are you big on animal prints? Yea, I’ve been getting into it lately. I like it with a twist, I try to combine animal print with something [easy].

Sebastian, maker of incredible hair care products, hosted a bunch of beauty editors for a DJ’ing class, with Harley Viera-Newton as the honorary hostess. Harley is, of course, a DJ/model/It Girl, and also the face (head?) of Sebastian. Sebastian is launching a digital lookbook on August 1 with a “mixology” theme, hence the DJ reference (although cocktails come to mind, too). What I learned from my DJ lesson is that Harley looks incredible in leopard sheaths and I suck at DJ’ing. Anyway.

The look book teaches you how to achieve certain looks–which are stunning–using a cocktail of Sebastian products. Pros were on hand to walk us through the styles and I got to speak to the inimitable Thomas Dunkin, who’s styled celebs, editorials, and runway looks galore. He was a font of knowledge. Here are some of his words of wisdom:

R-Pattz Rocks a Half-Shave: Ladies aren’t the only ones who can shock the world by chopping off their locks for film roles. The usually well-coiffed Robert Pattinson shaved half his head for his role in the upcoming film Cosmopolis, which is apparently about “a young man who makes an odyssey across Manhattan in order to get a haircut.” Wait, really? {People Style Watch}

Rachel Zoe launched a Tumblr! The mega stylist/reality TV star jumped on the Tumblr bandwagon yesterday. So far, the content is mostly about her clothing line, including a behind-the-scenes video. She must have found out about ours and realized she needed to get on it. We’ll totally follow you, Rach! {Rachel Zoe}

Prince Harry’s alleged girlfriend is in a look book: Florence Brudenell-Bruce, Prince Harry’s lingerie-modeling maybe-girlfriend got another modeling gig. She stars in the fall/winter ’11 look book for Anonymous by Ross+Bute. Some of the stuff is actually kinda cute. {Huffington Post}

Teen model sensations Lindsey Wixson and Daphne Groeneveld take Manhattan in “Scene on the Street” in W‘s August fall preview issue. The editorial, styled by the mag’s new fashion director Edward Enninful and photographed by Alasdair McLellan, features the young models all over Manhattan–from the Lower East Side to the Met, from Radio City to the Queensboro Bridge–styled to reflect their locations. Our favorite is the punk look on the LES. What’s yours?

While Steven Meisel had his girls catfighting to disco in Lanvin’s spring ads, he takes a happier tone in the ads for Fall 2011. Raquel Zimmermann and Karen Elson dance in unison in some classic Lanvin jewel-toned looks. We love how seriously they take their dancing and are really hoping there’s a video associated with this campaign. (Will Karen Elson provide the soundtrack?) Read more »

David Beckham looks so handsome in this just-released campaign image for his new fragrance, I almost want to buy it for myself. The soccer star and proud father is launching Homme by David Beckham, his third fragrance with Coty, which is apparently meant to have a more masculine image. Steve Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing for Coty Beauty, told WWD,

David Beckham Homme is a strategic launch for us and represents a key new orientation for the David Beckham fragrance brand — getting back to the male roots of the brand, enhancing David as an athlete and an aspirational man and building a new pillar to the David Beckham franchise.

Although Homme sounds like it’s all about the branding, here’s a breakdown of the scent: top notes of citrus, ginger, pine and fiery pepper; a heart of cashmere wood, leather and rosemary, and a drydown of mahogany wood, patchouli and skin musk.

The print campaign was shot by Alasdair Mclellen and a commercial is on its way! And since clearly all we care about is pictures of David Beckham, here are two behind-the-scenes shots via his Facebook. Enjoy!

In case you haven’t heard, Tyra Banks has penned a fantasy novel about modeling called Modelland. In fact, it’s going to be a trilogy! The release date for Modelland (Part I) is set for September 13, so she’s started promoting it in New York City and it sounds just as nutty and awesome as we’d hoped.

On Tuesday, Tyra took to the streets of New York dressed in a pink catsuit with words like “persimmon,” “bravo” and “unica” inexplicably written all over it with black suede knee-high boots. She was dressed up as Modelland’s protagonist, Tookie De La Crème.

Modelland, which is loosely based on Tyra’s life, basically sounds like a cross between Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, where models replace wizards and smizes replace rings. Yes, in Modelland Tyra turned “smize” (a term she coined for her signature modeling trick: smiling with your eyes), into a real thing that you can wear on your face.

It’s a gold sparkly feather-shaped eye mask. Tyra wore one on Good Morning America yesterday and was thrilled when Robin Roberts asked her what the hell was going on with her face. Here was her explanation:

Are you going to be in the UK this summer? Well, it might be worth making a special trip there. Buckingham Palace is throwing open its doors (for a mere £17.50 per person) until October 3 so that commoners can file by and gawk at Kate Middleton’s wedding finery, from the tiara to the shoes to The Dress. The exhibit is called “The Royal Wedding Dress: A Story of Great British Design.” Tickets are selling out quickly, obviously.

While we showed you every single possible angle of the dress on royal wedding day, the British papers had a sneak peek at the exhibition before it opened yesterday and shared some pictures of the dress and accessories.

Fashion Is Fun

Congratulations to Steven Kolb!

Thursday, Jul 21, 2011 / 8:33 PM

A big congratulations to Steven Kolb on his new position as CEO of the CFDA!

The internet’s been abuzz this week with news of actors chopping off their hair for their art. Dakota Fanning, who’s shooting a movie about a girl with leukemia, was spotted with a crop but it turned out to be a wig. So was Vanessa Hudgens, but she actually did the deed for a role in the upcoming film Gimme Shelter in which she plays a homeless girl. She told Access Hollywood that she looks like a “soccer mom.” We have to say we sort of agree with her. (Run out and get a pot of Sebastian’s Craft Clay, Vanessa.)

But it’s an honored tradition for actresses to go short for a role, and the beautiful thing about hair is that it grows back. Sometimes a short crop can even make a career: look at Mia Farrow who let Vidal Sassoon chop her hair for Rosemary’s Baby. And Agyness Deyn didn’t get any attention in the modeling world until she went short.

To celebrate the tradition of celebs going short–whether for a role or because of a life change–click through to see a roundup of everything from totally bald to the cutest of pixies.

Franca Sozzani took to her Vogue Italia blog this week to introduce a new online project. The self-professed hater and, then, lover of blogs is planning to launch a new channel to Vogue.it, which currently has four: V Talents, V Curvy, V TV and yes, V Black. In her post announcing the project, she is as unfiltered as ever.

Here is how she describes the new channel:

As from September a new project will be launched, or better, a new channel. And for all those who love to write this channel will be ideal. We will be speaking about fashion, photography, designers, fabrics, accessories, purses, shoes, jewelry, and hairstyles. And more, fashion, cinema and art, news from the world always linked to fashion, customs, traditions and the history of a Country.

So basically…everything? And yes, she is crowd sourcing for contributors, which wouldn’t be that weird if she wasn’t making the entire pitching and editing process public on her blog.
