Archive for July 2011
September not only means a news school year, it also heralds in a new hiring season. Looking to make a move and need a killer interview outfit? We say: Stick with black.
The basic looks professional, and it also serves as a no-fail canvas for more inventive accessories, like a brightly-colored necklace or pair of shoes.
For something different from the typical blazer, consider Helmut Lang’s slouchy wool jacket, which is discounted until August 1 at Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale. The asymmetrical collar offers a unique look without appearing sloppy.
Need a go-to bag? Burberry‘s black patent leather shopper is fail-safe. It’s big enough to carry all of your essentials without being bulking, and the lady-like, boxy style is totally on-trend for fall.
Need something to wear under that blazer? ALC makes great knit dresses that transition beautifully to evening when you pile on the jewelry. This particular style is hip without feeling forced. Chunky heels are a must.
If you are indeed in the market for a pair of sturdy heels, consider Stuart Weitzman’s “Tiebow” bootie. The oxford style adds a menswear slant, and the generous platform keeps them comfortable.

If Miu Miu‘s fall footwear was shoe porn than their Noir shades collection is…sunglasses smut? Even if that analogy doesn’t quite work, these sunnies do. In keeping with the prevailing ’40s vibe of Miu Miu’s fall 2011 collection, their shades are sparkly, cat-eyed and glamorous.
Retro-inspired but with a modern bent, sunglasses come in two shades of tortoise shell (with pink and blue lenses), glittering “saffron,” fire engine red, clay and basic black. Which style would you wear?

Gareth Pugh on His New Makeup Collaboration with MAC: ‘It’s Kind of Like a Weapon’
MAC is teasing us mercilessly about the brand’s impending collaboration with Brit designer Gareth Pugh. News leaked a few weeks ago that the designer and MAC, who have worked together on runway shows since the beginning of the designer’s career, are doing a limited edition makeup collection which will hit counters in November.
MAC hosted a party last night to fete Gareth and the collab, and left us wanting to know much, much more–which we suppose is the whole point. This collection is going to be major, whether you’re a makeup nerd or not.

Quote of the Day: Nicola Formichetti Puts His Foot In His Mouth, Again
By Leah Chernikoff“I think old people should just be old and go away…It’s not about being in the industry for ten years anymore: it’s about good ideas.”
–You’d think Nicola Formichetti would start filtering himself after the backlash that followed his W piece–he essentially told the mag that he doesn’t like working with “fat people.” (Then he tried to dig himself out of that hole, writing on Facebook that he really does like fat people! and worked with plus size models for V!).
But no. Read more »

Karl Lagerfeld Will Make an Appearance at Macy’s, Plus More Details on the Collection Including Sketches
The August 31 launch of Karl Lagerfeld’s highly anticipated contemporary collection for Macy’s is fast approaching. Yesterday, we showed you the first look from the collection (via Vogue) and today Macy’s has released sketches and more deets.
The collection will be comprised of 45 different styles with prices ranging between $50-$170 and will have a limited run of six to eight weeks, or shorter, if the reaction is anything like the frenzy that followed his H&M collection, which sold out in days.

In a drama of reality TV proportions, Kim Kardashian is out for legal blood. While she never shies away from a good endorsement deal, Kim is suing Old Navy for using a model who is her doppelganger in its recent ads.
The model, Melissa Molinaro, is featured in commercials and a faux music video (view it here) for the brand, which started airing back in February. According to TMZ, Old Navy tweeted: “@CBSNEWS reports that Old Navy’s Super CUTE star looks like @kimkardashian. #LOL. What do you think?” Kim thinks so, too, and apparently doesn’t like it.

Tavi’s Writing a Book About Being a Teenager
If we were the jealous types, we’d certainly be jealous of Tavi. She’s been to the couture shows, is a Jane Pratt collaborator, and now…has two books in the works. One is a Rizzoli coffee table book and is based on her blog. The other one? We can’t quite figure out how to categorize it. A combo of Mad Libs and Choose Your Own Adventure, maybe.
According to WWD, Tavi had a sleepover with author Marisa Meltzer, who penned the books How Sassy Changed My Life and Girl Power. The result? Not a bleary-eyed morning because they spent the whole night eating pizza and watching Clueless. No, instead that meeting yielded a book idea.

LOS ANGELES–There were dozen of celebs at Tuesday night’s Miu Miu party to celebrate the brand’s new Noir line of sunglasses, but it was Hailee Steinfeld, the face of the brand and star of that fantastic Bruce Weber lensed-campaign, that sent flashbulbs popping. I caught up with the 14-year-old actress (who spent most of the evening chatting with Tavi Gevinson–new bestie alert?).
Steinfeld told us she’s “in love” with Miu Miu and feels honored to be repping the label. And as for the transition from acting to print modeling? Turns out it’s not so foreign.
“It’s kind of funny because when I was younger I did a lot of print and then I went more into acting so I had a little deja vu when I went back to it, doing the whole modeling thing again,” she said. “I had such an amazing time filming especially working with Bruce Weber.”
Though the campaign might seem far from controversial–the teen actress is covered up and her poses are hardly suggestive–some critics have taken issue with her age, arguing that she’s too young to be the face of a label whose clothes are meant to be worn by and priced for grown ups.

Hailee Steinfeld, Tavi, Marilyn Manson and More Fete the Launch of Miu Miu’s “Noir” Sunglasses
LOS ANGELES–Last night Miu Miu pulled out all the stops to celebrate the launch of their “Noir” sunglasses collation with an over-the-top ’40s-themed bash at an enormous villa in the Hollywood Hills (apparently they film parts of Entourage there). The brand wrangled so many celebs–from campaign star Hailee Steinfeld (who was joined at the hip to new BFF Tavi Gevinson) to Diane Kruger to Smith Jerrod Jason Lewis to Marilyn Manson (yes, he was really there and he came with China Chow)–it was nearly impossible to avoid bumping into them.
The cat-eye ’40s-style glasses, which debuted on Miu Miu’s fall 2011 runway, were the stars of a short film, Muta, commissioned by the brand. The film, directed by award-winning Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel, premiered last night on a screen suspended in the villa’s grand courtyard. It’s the second installment in the “Miu Miu Women’s Tales Saga,” a film series that explores “the feminine love affair with Miu Miu.” (Watch the first film directed by Zoe Cassavetes here).
Muta is creepy in the best way: models in fall Miu Miu slithered and slinked and occasionally disappeared altogether on a cruise ship–one even contorted to squeeze through a tiny porthole. Only you never saw their faces.

Aurélie Bidermann’s Line for Urban Zen is Super Cute: Check Out the Full Collection Here
Personally, I’ve been obsessed with Aurélie Bidermann’s Do Brasil bracelet for nearly two years now. I wrote about it on one of my first posts for Fashionista, and my admiration has never waned.
So it’s with great pleasure that I’ve perused Bidermann’s Do Brasil capsule collection for Donna Karan’s Urban Zen brand. The line, which features muted tones that complement Urban Zen’s earthy aesthetic, isn’t just for show: 10% of all sales will go to the Urban Zen Foundation, which helps to preserve cultures and empower children across the globe. It Was Hot in Miami: The Best (and Weirdest) Looks from the Swimwear Shows
The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week swimwear shows just finished in Miami. The swim shows are interesting because the models smile a lot more, everything is super colorful, and everyone’s mostly naked. It’s also the only place in the world–outside of a reality show set in LA–where a bikini with really high heels actually makes sense. Asses also figure very prominently, from the strategic coverage of them, to using them as a billboard for advertising. Intrigued?
Click through to see a roundup of the best, coolest, and silliest things from the Miami swim runways this past week.
