Throw the stereotypes out the window. At least when it comes to teenagers and their shopping habits.

Asian American teens spend an average $140.97 per month on fashion, the most of any ethnic group, while white teenagers spend the least amount ($111.58). Latinos spend the most per trip–$98.20–while again, whites spend the least ($81.41).

That’s according to a new survey released by online market research Y Pulse, which taps its community of around 80,000 13 to 30 year olds to conduct surveys like this. The results of this particular report were drawn from 1,300 interviews with teenagers and college students conducted online between May 20 and May 30, 2011.

My look today is Virgin Suicides meets Twiggy! Right now I’m into a long, flowing, flower-power vibe.

Kiehl’s, despite being one of the original “heritage” American beauty brands, manages to stay dynamic and modern, mostly thanks to constant innovation and its ability to create buzz. Kiehl’s is that elusive combo of cool image and great product.

Kiehl’s has a few exciting things happening this month, and celebrated with a party last night. In what is the most conveniently timed launch of all time (thanks to this obnoxious heat wave), the brand’s new Ultra Facial Oil-Free Collection just debuted.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Carine Roitfeld would be styling V‘s September cover and cover story and it’s now coming to fruition. WWD reports that the legendary former French Vogue editor is collaborating with Mario Testino on a 72-page “fashion extravaganza” for the glossy. September’s theme is “heroes” and thus Carine has chosen to pay tribute to late icon Elizabeth Taylor.

Gwynnie’s new Peter Lindbergh-lensed ads for Coach starting popping up yesterday–here it is! As we mentioned a few months ago, this campaign will only be seen in international glossies. We here in the US will have to get our smiley Gwyneth fix elsewhere (or cough up for international editions). She looks very happy, very pretty, and almost preternaturally American. Which perfectly describes the Coach brand, actually. Read more »

Not every edition of Vogue has the chance to produce an original cover each month. The making of a cover is an expensive process, from hiring the crew and casting the models to traveling to an exotic locale. Vogue Hellas and Vogue Portugal both frequently reuse editorial photos or covers from their sister Vogues and it looks like the two were on the same wavelength this month. For their August issues, both editions had the lovely Karmen Pedaru in Pucci gracing their covers in a photo from this year’s June/July edition of Vogue Paris.

PARIS–New fashion site Nowfashion takes the best qualities about the internet–speed, instant gratification, insider-y-ness–and applies it to fashion. They publish runway shows in real time and today, they’re publishing their first ever live photo shoot (which is being followed via Twitter and Facebook by the Vogue Paris team, a colleague tells me).

I found out about the website, when, (please don’t tell), I was desperately looking for images of a show I had missed, which I was supposed to cover–Nowfashion saved my (splendid) bottom–and I could file an hour after the show.

After a little bit of research, I found out the team hiding behind it: the site is in fact the love child of New York Times photographer Valerio Mezzanotti (whose photos most often accompany Cathy Horyn’s stories), and fashion consultant Valerio Nappi, in collaboration with ID’s Sarah Hay (who also writes for Financial Times).

2011′s Beginners was a great film that made a lasting impression on me for a lot of reasons, one of which, I have to admit, was French actress Mélanie Laurent‘s effortless style. Most viewers probably don’t give Ewan McGreggor’s character’s girlfriends’ outfits much of a second thought, but that is precisely why they are so perfect. They are unpretentious, vaguely ’70s and casual, but still chic in the way that a cool French actress spending some time in Los Angeles would dress. She looks comfortable and young but still put together.

I left the theater wanting just about everything she wore (and a puppy and a French accent), but I still can’t stop thinking about the chic, simple black leather shoulder strap bag she wore throughout most of the movie. I can’t tell where exactly it’s from–it might be vintage–but it feels like the one chic, versatile accessory missing from my wardrobe. I’ve been on the lookout ever since and luckily there are tons to choose from in all price ranges–from J. Crew to Coach to The Row.

Take a look.

When we think of Issey Miyake, we don’t necessarily think trendy. Or hip. Or cool. Yet the brand’s resort collection for 2012 is all of those things, and much more.

Not only are we obsessed with the colors–plenty of pastels and summery bolds–but we’re also keen on the silhouettes, from the oversize shirt dresses to the ballerina frocks. And the patterned tights were just beyond. It was all very on-brand, without being boring.

Surely this has something to do with the appointment of a new creative director; Yoshiyuki Miyamae was promoted in May to the position. But it’s also that Miyake’s aesthetic–much like that of Dries Van Noten and Kenzo–is very right now. So while these labels always do good work, they currently happen to be tapping into something greater.

Haid markets the company as “a platform for inspiration, exchange, ideas, and the honor of creation.” Now, she is expanding that mission with the launch of a limited-edition Atelier-Mayer magazine.
