To most people who grew up outside of the metropolitan area, “thrift store” means cheap clothes that are quick fixes for an empty wallet and a starving wardrobe. A Salvation Army or local hospital charity store will yield sometimes cool and vintage-looking items for about $5; I spent most of high school scrounging secondhand places and the one vintage store in an hour radius of my hometown (where I once got a floor-length leopard fur coat for $40).

You can imagine my surprise, then, when I first moved to New York a few years ago and discovered that even Goodwill can be overpriced. An old tee that would normally cost $2 would be marked up to $20, and forget even looking at anything labeled “vintage”–even my grandmother’s muumuu can fetch $60 in certain Manhattan boutiques. I despaired. How else was I supposed to dress myself? I missed the thrill of the hunt, the sifting through musty men’s button downs and neon track jackets to uncover the perfect _____(insert heart’s desire). Plus, I liked being able to go shopping and not spend tons of money.

Though it’s taken me awhile, I eventually found few places that deserve the thrifty label, where I can nab four or five pieces for under $30 (as I did this weekend). Here are some of the city’s hidden secondhand gems (and some more well-known ones that are just plain awesome).

After accepting a Webby Award this year, which, by the way, we’re not saying was fixed, but like didn’t that just feel a little planned? Like Anna maybe just said to someone, “so, included in this year’s plan for Vogue’s branding, we will win a Webby Award and I will accept it,” and it was so? The point is that after some have criticized the mag for being less culturally relevant than it once was, Vogue seems to have gotten pretty dedicated to upgrading the internet side of its branding.

Tying that to Vogue’s reliance on advertising, they have recently launched the Influencer Network, through which advertisers can use Vogue-appointed panel members to extend the reach of their products through social media. Susan Plagemann, vice president of publishing at Vogue, tells AdWeek, “There are a lot of people who are self-appointed experts. The biggest difference is, we’re developing a program of ambassadors who spread the word digitally across a very big network about the access that’s been given because of Vogue.” Panel members are asked to provide feedback and talk about products on their social networks and blogs. So basically, the advertisers are using (and presumably compensating) Vogue, who is using (and not compensating) Vogue readers and in the end both Vogue and its advertisers get more publicity.

So, what is Vogue’s selection process for this “network?”

OK, now this is getting ridiculous. Another Jersey Shore girl has embraced multi-colored strands, to rather tacky effect. We loved it on Lauren Conrad. We still thought it was cute on Snooki (there’s just something cute about Snooki, generally.) But now JWOWW debuted a new look while frolicking on the Jersey Shore, and it’s not good.

They look like clip-in extensions gone wrong, and the colors are horrible. Dark brick red and dirty orange? The colors just seem really harsh.

The Middleton Sisters Are an Inspiration on Pro-Anorexia Sites: We’ve all noticed that Kate Middleton lost weight since she got married, and now those that frequent pro-anorexia websites have noticed, too. It’s Miami Swim Week! Also, Kristin Cavallari is apparently still relevant–or at least Diesel thinks so. They chose the former Hills star to walk in a glass swimsuit at their swim runway show at The Raleigh yesterday. It’s a blue one-shoulder cut-out one piece accented with shards of glass. What was the inspiration, you must be wondering?

Hipster parents everywhere can breath a sigh of relief. Opening Ceremony is launching their very first kids collection in collaboration with A is for Apple, a Hong Kong-based brand.

The collection is “inspired by the French Riviera storytelling of Opening Ceremony’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection” the release informs, and is essentially meant to be big kids’ Opening Ceremony shrunk down for little kids. Sadly the line is for girls and boys age six months through six years, which means there’s absolutely no way I or any small adult can squeeze into them (Crew Cuts size 14 is a different story).

Of course, the look book is styled to hipster-kid perfection–child models look like they’re having fun just being kids, blowing bubbles, holding balloons, hanging out in cute clothes. The sailor hats and eye patches and bunny ears add some adorable childlike whimsy too.

Take a look.
