Azzedine Alaïa hosted his first ever couture show (and first runway show in eight years) yesterday at his studio in Paris. At the time, the show was shrouded in Tom Ford-esque secrecy–only a select few were granted access and no photography was allowed. Of course, this morning, official photographs of the collection were released and the internets are buzzing with news and gossip from what is being called an “epic event.”
Despite the drama the house of Dior is experiencing right now, it’s not getting in the way of its other businesses. The new Miss Dior handbag ad, featuring long-time Dior muse Marion Cotillard, was revealed in WWDtoday. Unlike some of the past campaigns, it has a quiet feeling.
Featuring Cotillard looking thoughtfully in the distance through a sun-dappled window, the ad was shot by Mikael Jansson. She’s holding a chain-handled Miss Dior in what looks to be alligator, and the colors are very soft and muted. A peaceful moment for the beleaguered house.
The ad will hit international glossies next week and is also set to appear in key September issues, including Vanity Fair.
Is Prada trying to compete with Justin Bieber? The house’s new scent, called Candy, is a bid to attract more youthful customers. It’s meant to be Prada‘s third scent pillar, to round out their popular Amber and Infusion d’Iris fragrances.
A spokesperson for the brand told WWD, “Prada has the ability to reinvent itself when it wants to and Miuccia wanted to make a bold statement with this launch.”
And more LK Bennett, if you can believe it! As promised, the royal couple donned matching white Stetson cowboy hats to attend a rodeo in Calgary yesterday. The duchess wore an Alice by Alice Temperley blouse with a pair of dark wash bootcut jeans by Goldsign. She finished off the look with a pair of brown cowboy boots. Read more »
A few weeks ago, we showed you a trailer for The Guts of Duckie Brown, a documentary about Duckie Brown designers Steven Cox and Daniel Silver. Last night, I attended a private screening of the very short (about 15 minutes long) film. It’s not the most in-depth documentary I’ve ever seen, but it is very entertaining and well-done and, despite its short length, is successful at telling a story that conveys what Duckie Brown is about and how Steven and Daniel’s partnership works. But whatever. That’s fine. Especially if it helps boost the bottom lines of these extraordinary ateliers.
We’ll even go as far as to participate in the couture dressing game. Herewith you’ll find our favorite looks from Fall 2011 Haute Couture, and the celebrities we’d like to see wearing them.
What I Did On My Summer Vacation is a new series where we ask designers how they’re spending the dog days. Our first contributor is one of our favs, Ten Undies designer Daphne Javitch, who gave us some adorable snapshots of her travels.
Daphne’s summer plans:
One more day to go and we all get to catch on sleep. In the meantime, here is a quick catch-up on what Paris has wearing, watching and attending on the third day of couture week.
With a slight nod to the intense creative period of Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russe in Paris in the 1920s, the collection highlighted Mr. Gaultier’s classic silhouette and tailored based clothes–a style of Parisian chic that has always been central to his work. He has altered how we view traditional clothing. At any Gaultier couture show, there’s always the masterly tailored pinstripe pantsuit–now in a dark navy double breasted jacket, with a white tutu at the hips, or a cropped double breasted version with a cape–and the omnipresent trench. Here, the infinite permutations of the trench resulted in a cropped grey wool coat, a brown leather and silk style, and a pale yellow silk coat dress with flowing chiffon in the back.
Lauren Conrad has been getting democratic on her beauty blog, thebeautydepartment, letting readers make grooming decisions for her. Her latest is a doozy, and we suspect it’s going to be a HUGE hair trend.
As seen at left, she did a hybrid dip dye/tie dye hair color. It looks absolutely sick (in the good sense of the term) and if my hair wasn’t so damn short right now I’d run out and do the same thing.
French designer Roland Mouret– he of the infamous Galaxy dress– was just named creative director of footwear and accessories brand Robert Clergerie. The the 33-year-old shoe label has hired Mouret as part of its new development strategy–they want to bring a more contemporary feeling to the label.
“I’m delighted to see Roland Mouret at the head…of the Maison that I created,” said brand founder and designer Robert Clergie in a statement.
Despite Mouret’s lack of shoe design experience, his appointment does make some sort of sense, especially considering his avid fan base.
