Roland Mouret Named Creative Director at Robert Clergerie

French designer Roland Mouret-- he of the infamous Galaxy dress-- was just named creative director of footwear and accessories brand Robert Clergerie. The the 33-year-old shoe label has hired Mouret as part of its new development strategy--they want to bring a more contemporary feeling to the label. “I’m delighted to see Roland Mouret at the head...of the Maison that I created," said brand founder and designer Robert Clergie in a statement. Despite Mouret's lack of shoe design experience, his appointment does make some sort of sense, especially considering his avid fan base.

“I’m delighted to see Roland Mouret at the head...of the Maison that I created," said brand founder and designer Robert Clergerie in a statement.

Despite Mouret's lack of shoe design experience, his appointment does make some sort of sense, especially considering his avid fan base.

Kate Middleton and A-listers like Victoria Beckham and Scarlett Johansson like his clothes because they make women look hot--not overtly sexy or skanky or cool-but-dowdy. Just hot. Hopefully he can bring that nuanced style to the Clergerie shoe collection.

As for Mouret's feelings about the appointment: "This is a chance for me to work with a master on the art and craft of shoe design and to be part of the special relationship that women have with their shoes," he said.

Mouret will head Clergerie's three branches: women's, men's and mid-market women's footwear designs. (There is no ready-to-wear collection planned...yet.) Perhaps he'll design some new shoes for the Duchess so she can finally change out of those LK Bennett wedges.
