Elie Tahari has seen success in the fashion biz for over 40 years. So to ensure his success for the next 40, this week he’s relaunched his website, elietahari.com. The revamped site features an enhanced e-commerce experience, a “social media” component, and a bulked up editorial component that sees Elie himself interviewing celebrities and curating pages.
We chatted with the Israeli-born fashion mogul about his new editorial role, the celebrity interviews he’d like to score, and the point of view he’ll bring to his new site. We can only hope it’s as honest, charming, and hilarious as Elie is in conversation.
Fashionista: We read this quote from you that we kind of love, that says you greet each day with a “Don’t you fuck with me today.” Can we look forward to that kind of attitude and editorial voice on your new site and in your new webzine, ETC?
Elie Tahari: [Laughs] Why not? That comes from a show with Lena Horne and the show starts as she wakes up in the morning and opens the windows and says ‘Good Morning! It’s going to be a beautiful day!” and then she looks at the audience and says, “Do you think that’s how i wake up?” And everyone is stunned. And she says let me show you how I wake up. And then she gets up and says ‘Don’t you fuck with me today!” And I think it’s so true. Especially in the morning if you’re not in a good mood.
One of the recurring features of your new webzine will be the monthly column “15 minutes with Elie Tahari.” Who do you want to interview?
I told them to get Mrs. Obama [laughs] but we’re already talking to Martha Stewart and Emmy Rossum and Joan Rivers–so it will be an interesting range. I’ll have my own angle since I’m an insider. I’ll be asking about their shopping habbits and why they are spending $5,000 on a gown from a particular designer. Is it because of the designer or because it looks great on her?
Is the recession affecting business at all? Is it affecting how you market or design?
Business has been good since the middle of 08 and even last week we had a great week. I think that woman in particular always want to dress well and sex is sex. It’s always in. Women always like to dress sexy.
Do you use social media? Which is your favorite medium?
I’m into Twitter–it’s immediate satisfaction. You get answers right away while the subject is still hot.
