Is it the characters’ personalities or their iconic style that most inspires you? Simon Kneen: I love the Mad Men aesthetic--and what’s not to love about beautiful, dressed-up tailoring? I was also very inspired by the time period the series embodied, the whole 60’s era in America. The idea of such strong characters reflected in strong dressing is powerful, whether that is a slim-cut suit and fedora hat for him, or a perfectly fitted pencil skirt and silk blouse for her. I’m drawn to the playful and sexy nature of the time as well. Women were just beginning to find themselves in the workplace. I wanted to reflect that empowerment but also push the femininity with a few fun, sexy touches – leopard print heels, silk print scarves, and a leopard print trench coat.

Describe the creative process in bringing the Banana Republic “Mad Men” collection to life. Janie Bryant: Simon and I hit it off when we talked about our design process and our shared love for perfect tailoring. Last fall, Simon invited me to NY to brief the Banana Republic design team on “Mad Men” design and how I’ve developed the wardrobe for each character.

Do you have a favorite look from the collection? Which one? SK: It’s very tough to choose one, but I do love the red taffeta dress for women and layered cardigan under the suit for men as they capture that yesterday/today element we wanted to make sure the collection achieved. JB: I love the animal printed handbag and shoes! I also love the Navy and Black Houndstooth Sheath. Of course the fit is amazing.

Describe the collection in your own words. SK: Beautifully tailored classic Jackie O or Cary Grant classic mixed with sexy modern day attitude. JB: Our collection is about creating vintage, Mad Men inspired pieces in a way that makes them contemporary, versatile, affordable and fashionable.

How can we all channel our inner Betty or Don to pull off the ultimate “Mad Men” look? JB: You have to find a piece that inspires you to bring out your vintage cool. Dress it up or dress it down—or maybe just add a classic cocktail!

Make sure to head over to a Banana Republic store Thursday to get your hands on the collection - it's limited edition so it's bound to go fast. And while you're there, ask when the Kiernan Shipka collab is set for. We'd be really into that too, just saying.
