An investigative report out of Brazil has found that Zara‘s Brazilian suppliers contracted with factories which subjected workers to hazardous “slave-like” working conditions and employed at least one girl aged 14.

According to Repórter Brasil, who broke the story, and Made in Brazil (who translated the report), AHA Indústria e Comércio de Roupas Ltda., a supplier that Zara uses to contract with factories to produce their garments in Brazil, has been under investigation by São Paulo’s Bureau of Labor and Employment since May. The Bureau of Labor and Employment found that 52 people were working in unsafe and unsanitary conditions at at one of the factories contracted by AHA Indústria to produce pants for Zara Brazil. Workers were made to work 16-hour shifts in windowless factories, earning only between R$274 and R$460 a month (that’s $170 to $286), which is below Brazil’s minimum wage of R$545 ($339) .

In another inspection, a 14-year-old girl was found working “under slave-like conditions” at another factory in São Paulo contracted by AHA Indústria for Zara.

Apparently, The Dark Knight Rises star Anne Hathaway is a victim of unwanted paparazzi attention. So, she wrote an original rap song about it “in the style of Lil Wayne.” Here, she performs it with conviction on Conan (while looking lovely in a floral and lace frock by Erdem). However, Anne is not the first female actress to surprise us with her rap skills. Read more »

The CFDA has just announced those 10 promising young designers who will be moving into the CFDA’s garment district Fashion Incubator studios next May, WWD is reporting.

The program launched in 2010 with a $200,000 grant from the city and is now underwritten by Target. Chosen designers are provided with several hundred square foot studios priced well below market value ($1,500-$2,000). It’s a major help for a designer just starting out, allowing them to take the exorbitant amount of money they may have been spending on rent and put it into their business. It’s also just a great way for a young designer to get on the CFDA’s radar. This year, however, the program will do more than just give designers a place to work, starting with the program’s first members, which include Prabal Gurung, Sophie Theallet, Waris Ahluwalia and others.

They are the first beneficiaries of a new partnership with NYU’s Stern Consulting Corps., a selected group of NYU Stern M.B.A. students who will provide full business mentoring to the incubatees. They’ll help the designers develop “full financial statements, cash flow projections and investor-ready business plans.” This added business incubation component may prove even more beneficial to the designers in the long term–especially in a time when even the most talented designers can fail as the result of poor business practices.

So, who are the lucky 10?

Leigh Lezark is next up to collaborate with H&M. The dj-turned-model-turned-?? has some pretty big shoes to fill, following Lanvin, Versace and Karl Lagerfeld.

According to British Vogue, Lezark will work with the brand to create its first ever store-within-in-a-store at Selfridges in London. She’ll also curate a collection of clothing and accessories, which will be on display exclusively at the London Selfridges store, which is set to open August 25.

But what to expect from the perennial It girl’s collection?

It’s hardly news considering the rumors that Giambattista Valli was up next to design a line for Macy’s have been circulating for some time, but today brings the official confirmation from the mass retailer that it’s actually happening. And sooner than we thought. The collection is set to hit Macy’s stores on October 26, WWD is reporting.

Valli might not have the name recognition of Karl Lagerfeld, whose collection for Macy’s Impulse line goes on sale on August 31, but he appeals to a more discerning in-the-know-type fashionista and gives the retailer some serious fashion cred.

According to WWD, the line will be priced between $50 and $150 and is comprised of “cocktail dresses, skirts, blouses, lightweight jackets, edgy pants and graphic T-shirts” all done in the designer’s signature bold color and texture combinations and ladylike style. For our part, we’re hoping to see something like the look above, left, that Emma Stone recently wore on the red carpet.

Few trends have as long a shelf life as mod, though it could be because this ’60s trend is the style that never actually goes out of style.

In 1995, Marc Jacobs told Vogue that the sixties was the most “modern period in fashion,” and that “if I saw those clothes walking down the street today, I would say they looked modern, experimental and classic.” This was, of course, during a time when mod was having yet another resurgence, but the point remains. A shift dress never seems to go the way of the Dodo.

The ’60s youthquake hit fall collections like Prada, Burberry Prorsum, Alberta Ferretti, and Jil Sander, showing clean lines, bright colors and the occasional crazy headgear. Fashion editors are translating them to magazine pages at an alarming rate, and we can’t get enough of it.

Last fall saw a focus on the 50s bombshell, while the present takes inspiration from Twiggy. Is the 70s set for next year? Time will tell on that one, but for now click through to take a look at some of the standout mod editorials for fall.

You can’t walk a block on a rainy day in New York City without seeing a pair of Hunter wellington boots. Also the unofficial Glastonbury uniform, the rubber boots have become somewhat iconic and are indisputably what the Hunter brand is known for. Recently, however, the brand has been expanding into other categories including leather footwear, handbags, accessories and now outerwear, which is set to hit stores at the end of this month.

The coats are classic, well-made and functional–exactly what we’d hoped for when we found out Hunter was planning to launch outerwear back in May. There’s a classic trench, wool peacoat and trench, a quilted coat, a field coat, a duffle coat, a fur-trimmed parka and a couple of down coats that look like they might actually keep you warm without making you look like a ridiculous eskimo. The men’s coats are great too and there’s nothing over $650.

Hunter may always be known for their ubiquitous wellies, but they definitely got it right with this outerwear collection, which will be available at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale’s, Saks and Nordstrom, as well as on their e-commerce site in September. Click through for the full look book.
