This morning Dr. Martens, Scott Schuman, and Garance Doré hosted a brunch (read: AM cocktail party) to celebrate Dr. Martens new First and Forever campaign at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo. Journalists socialized amidst the Neil Young photos and were encouraged to share stories of firsts – first kiss, first love, first pair of Doc Martens, the first time you felt really embarrassed for someone else who was sharing a pee story on video. (Bodily fluids was a hot topic. Champagne in the morning really gets fashion people talking!)
But even the amazingly embarrassing stories couldn’t get in the way of the stellar marketing campaign by Dr. Martens. Let’s be honest, everyone remembers their first pair of Dr. Martens – it’s like a rite of passage. But Dr. Marten’s wants to break away from being a beloved memory and become something to be loved forever. Not hard when you have an classic product fronted by Agyness Deyn and Ash Stymest.
The new campaign features Aggy and Ash styled by Way Perry in some amazing James Dean look-a-like outfits (Aggy loves her some James Dean), posing in vintage cars and arcades. Photographed by Gavin Watson, who’s famous for his photos of British subcultures, the ads will make you want to put on your Docs and rock out to some Neil Young. (Really, there are a lot of Neil Young photos at Morrison Hotel Gallery.)
Check out the campaign to get some serious fall inspiration. We predict white socks and Docs to be the next big trend, don’t you agree?

Kenneth Cole Raises Awareness for Social Issues; Twitter Word Vomit Isn’t One of Them
“I thought it was quirky; I thought it was funny,” Kenneth Cole admits over lunch yesterday at NYC’s The Little Owl. Sure, this take on his February Tweet-astrophe departs from the public apology he issued on its heels, when he deemed said tweet “absolutely inappropriate”. (Again, for reference, the tweet: “Millions in uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they heard our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo -KC.”)
But Cole is one of the only fashion industry vets who might’ve earned the right to shrug off such a blunder. His career’s marked by a constant effort to raise both money and awareness for pressing issues, by starting foundations of his own (Awearness), and creating products that both give back (tees to benefit the gulf oil spill clean up) and spread messages (his “We All Have AIDS” shirts). February’s Tweet may have been a PR debacle, but those 140 characters didn’t come from a character that’s apathetic to current affairs. One of the first questions Cole asked us over grilled char and mashed potatoes was “If you could ask Barack Obama one question, what would it be?” (The designer may have been sourcing material, as he attended Anna Wintour’s fundraiser for the President just last night.)
So it’s easy to believe that Cole’s new Where Do You Stand* campaign is much more than just a mollifying PR maneuver.

10 Questions for Project Runway
1. Why does Mood always give the designers nice fabric bags, and give everyone else (pedestrians like me) the gross plastic ones?
2. Why does Joshua want to switch genders with Julia?
3. Tim Gunn, you were the dean of Parsons’ fashion school, right? I’m pretty sure you weren’t hugging everyone that shed a tear back then, so why are you doing it now? Especially for designers who get to end their days at 11 pm?
4. Why is there a fashion show in Battery Park? Are they trying to fast forward five years to a time when Conde Nast girls will be roaming Manhattan’s nether region?

Last night, Opening Ceremony threw a block party on Howard Street (where their flagship is located) to celebrate the stateside launch of Kim Jones’ collaboration with Bean Pole, a South Korean retailer. Thus, the party was sort of Korean-themed with a Korean taco truck and cocktails made with soju. To round out the block party vibe, Brooklyn MC Theophilus London performed to a fashionable crowd that included Shala Monroque, Jen Brill, Phil Oh, and Rachel Chandler. Even new Kenzo creative directors (and Opening Ceremony co-founders) Humberto Leon and Carol Lim made time to stop by.
The always stylish and multi-talented Solange Knowles was also there and joined London on stage for two songs after doing a three-hour DJ set. Even though she was probably pretty exhausted from all that, Solange, who is becoming a regular here on Fashionista, was nice enough to chat with us briefly after her awesome performance. Here’s what she had to say about dj’ing, stealing clothes from her sister and doing a clothing line.

Every year Beauty Inc ranks the world’s top 100 beauty companies and this morning, the results came in for 2010.
While it’s not exactly a shocker who made the list (L’Oreal, Proctor & Gamble and Chanel all nabbed top spots) it is surprising to note how the overall list has changed since last year. Namely, that total sales have increased–25.1% to be exact–and that, in particular, small firms saw a large amount of growth, with the list’s 100th-ranked company showing a 9.2% increase since 2009. The news is particularly heartening because, in case you haven’t heard, retail isn’t exactly having a good year.
But not everyone was immune to the recent financial crisis: Of the 15 companies that saw a decline in sales, seven were from Japan, where consumer confidence has been in a continual downward spiral.
See the list of the top 25 beauty companies after the jump.
