Archive for August 2011

Glossies had a rough go of it during the first half of this year. Sales for all major fashion titles were down, with the exception of Vogue (up more than 12%) and Allure (flat, which is sort of a victory.)

Vogue’s secret? Putting Lady Gaga on its March cover. That cover alone sold 100,000 copies more than Vogue’s 2010 March cover, WWD is reporting. Reality stars are also newsstand gold. Glamour’s Kim Kardashian cover and People Style Watch’s Lauren Conrad cover were huge sellers, though both those titles’ sales are down overall. And our favorite blonde girl-next-door-types? Glenda Bailey, Harper Bazaar’s EIC told WWD, “It would be a lot easier if we could feature proven sellers like Jennifer Aniston or Gwyneth Paltrow on the cover every month.” No one mentioned Sarah Jessica Parker, surprisingly, who is still getting quite a bit of play on covers.

And the cover stinkers?

Happy Birthday Michael Kors!

Tuesday, Aug 9, 2011 / 7:00 PM

Fashionista wishes a very happy birthday to American sportswear hero Michael Kors! MK is having a great week: today is his birthday and last week he got engaged to his longtime beau Lance LaPere. What’s a better birthday present than love?

The thing we love about lesser-known fashion weeks is that designers aren’t afraid to get a little freaky creative on our asses. And Copenhagen’s recent fashion week, which wrapped on Saturday, is no exception. Between white-faced models, a presentation set in a gym and a Black Swan-inspired runway show, the week was anything but boring. Oh and the clothes were pretty noteworthy too.

Here are our favorite moments, in no particular order.

You might have heard of MyFDB, which bills itself as the IMDB for fashion. It launched a few years ago but kinda fell off our radar until we learned that Zoe Saldana (a favorite since Center Stage, hello) is one of the founders and our interest was piqued once again. Saldana is getting married to the site’s co-founder, model and entrepreneur Keith Britton.

So we e-chatted with the soon to be newlyweds about how they got into the business of catering to fashion professionals (and obsessives like us), what’s up next for the site (think fashion archives people), and how they manage to work together and still stay engaged.

Well here you go: Barneys‘ full fall campaign starring Carine Roitfeld has been released on WWD. And we didn’t even have to wait a whole day to see it! Carine isn’t the only Roitfeld in the campaign. Her progeny Vladmir and Julia also share the spotlight, along with model Natasha Poly.

Of course, the whole clan looks gorgeous and very Carine-ified, decked out in nearly all black Rick Owens, Givenchy and The Row and shot by Mario Sorrenti. Nice work, Miss Roitfeld!

Ali(ana) Lohan, Lindsay’s 17-year-old sister, just got signed to a multi-year modeling contract with Next in LA, Just Jared is reporting.

So far Ali’s official modeling gigs have been limited to showcasing some looks (left) from Lindsay‘s Spring/Summer 2011 6126 line. She got a lot of attention back in September when the campaign launched, mostly because she was 16 at the time and she was dressed in a lot of skimpy gear. (Sixteen seems downright matronly now thanks to Thylane, doesn’t it?)

Wanna Be A Fashionista Intern? We’re Hiring!

Tuesday, Aug 9, 2011 / 1:30 PM

Looking for an internship on our fair site? Look no further–we’re looking for fall interns in our New York City office!

As interns ourselves, we can tell you that this is a fun and rewarding place to work. But it takes some serious fashion industry knowledge.

Fashionista needs their interns to have an arsenal of information about brands, designers, industry business leaders, models, editors, photographers, and more. You should be fashion news obsessed, an avid reader of the blogosphere and fashion sites with the ability to scour the web for under-the-radar news and interesting story ideas. They’ll need two full days from you so plan accordingly.

A strong writing background is a must–you’ll have to crank out posts superfast–and a familiarity with blogging platforms and photoshop skillz are a huge bonus.

If Zara’s just-released fall collection wasn’t enough to make you long for a crisp breeze, behold H&M’s covetable fall collection, as modeled by the gorgeous Karlie Kloss and Sasha Pivovarova. This collection, loaded with chunky knits and jewel tones, is definitely going to provide some anchors for our fall wardrobes. The standouts here are the not-too-precious floral prints and the pants–get them wide legged, slouchy, or harem-esque. Outerwear is classic, with offerings like a maxi camel coat and a perfect parka.
