Invariably when you put hundreds of beauty products under one roof, there are going to be a few things that make you scratch your head and say, “Wha?” (Like the “hat head” to the left, which I think was just a demonstration of how well that company’s hair products work, not an endorsement of a new style. At least I hope not.)

While I saw a lot of amazing new things at Cosmoprof, I saw a lot of things that made me giggle. Three of the five things here have to do with hair. I don’t know what that says about the hair care industry, but hair is obviously an area of potential profit and also an area of neurosis for a lot of people, so entrepreneurs are constantly trying to exploit those things in the hopes that they’re inventing the new scrunchie. Or Bumpit. Or hair feathers.

Read on to see the beauty products that made me laugh.

Anyone that’s a fan of Madewell is well acquainted with their cheery world of mismatched prepdom, which was served up alongside cupcakes, margaritas, and style experts Thursday night at the brand’s NYC flagship. An installment in their Denim after Dark event series (which has been running since 2008), the evening was a celebration for emerging brand Ace & Jig with special guest, Teen Vogue’s Mary-Kate Steinmiller.

The newly crowned hottest editor in the fashion land, an award bestowed on her after winning Racked’s much-talked-about poll, the perky style star was there to provide denim guidance to those in need. Sporting a new pink streak in her signature blond mop, the Steinmiller told us, “In honor of my hot editor win, I’ve dyed [a section of] my hair hot pink.

ck Lara Stone for Calvin Klein Fall 2011 Campaign (Preview)

Ads can be a million times better than the best editorial, or a trillion times worse. The way I see it, ads are the place for a brand to tell its version of a story for fall. It’s like viewing a collection in its natural habitat…so it better be good. (Like this Givenchy ad at left.)

This bunch of fall ads includes Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, Armani, and Proenza Schouler among others, so click through to see who we think succeeded and who didn’t fare so well.

As for those Ceryth Wyn Evans Marc Jacobs men’s ads… A++. If you wanna send a framed one to our office, that would be totally fine. Our Céline manifesto was looking a little lonely, anyway.

While our lives may not be quite as fabulous as some people we know, who have barely spent a weekend in the city since May, we do try to get out whenever the opportunity arises. Hello there and welcome to Business Casual, a new monthly column following my jarring and (hopefully!) exciting transition from working as a fashion writer in NYC to attending business school at MIT Sloan. I wanted to write this column because some fashion friends have expressed an interest in swallowing the grad school pill themselves and tumbling down this crazy rabbit hole. But coming from this industry, it can be tricky to know where to begin. My hope is to fill in those blanks. Please hit me up in the comments with any of your questions. From deciding to go to business school to getting accepted is a long and annoying process, but you can get through it.

First, a little about me, so we’re not strangers…

What could have been the love child of an epic mating between new and old school, may not be anymore. WWD reports today that Sassy‘s Jane Pratt–now the EIC of XOJane.com–may no longer be involved with Tavi Gevinson’s upcoming website, after all.

Earlier this year, Tavi and Jane announced they would be collaborating on a site for teens called “Rookie.” XOJane launched but there was no sign of Tavi’s project. Up until this July, the blogger was still talking about it. At an event in Brooklyn, the high school sophomore dished details about the partnership, announcing the official title and what to expect in terms of design and tone. She also did a guest post on the site about the disgusting contents of her locker.

According to WWD, Tavi has recently decided against launching with Say Media, the company which hosts XOJane, in order to have full control of her site.

1. Is a garment made of pet supplies really going to show off someone’s talent? Even these kids have it better.

2. Did Tim Gunn reference Guantanamo Bay torture methods? And relate them to fashion? Comparing Julie’s fabric to waterboarding was a bit of a stretch, no?

3. Can we break out of this bandage skirt silhouette that everyone’s really into?

4. In the words of my friend Erika, “Why do the models all look like they’re going to Pacha?”

5. Why can’t we be best friends with Michael Kors? Especially during fashion week when referential quips like “Sea vixen Barbie,” would deliver a much needed jolt of hilarity.
