Broken Benches Send Editors and Buyers Crashing to the Floor at Balenciaga Show

PARIS--There are few designers who can expect editors to not only stay at a show, but stand, after multiple benches creak, crack, and finally give way, sending fashion notables to an ungainly heap on the floor. But it happened today at the Balenciaga show in Paris. According to an anonymous birdie who had the good fortune to be at Balenciaga’s show earlier today, first the bench the Traina sisters were sitting on started creaking like it was about to give--they looked at each other and jumped up before it gave. Then the bench that Kate Lanphear and Eric Wilson were sitting on broke and they fell. After that everyone stood up for the duration of the show. Wouldn't you?? Vogue Italia reports that the first row benches were included in the chaos, and the likes of Salma Hayek, Francois Henry Pinault, Anna Wintour and Catherine Deneuve were all forced to stand, though we don't think they were among the ones that actually fell. Vogue UK’s editor Alexandra Shulman said in the mag’s online review of the show, “It created quite the spirit of camaraderie.” Of course, luckily for those of us still asleep in the US, Twitter proceeded to go crazy. Here are some of the best tweets from those standing on the front lines:

@CathyHorynNYT: Benches cracking at Balenciaga as guests leap up. A second one just carted off. Now a third broke and nervous buzz starts, as in "Me next?" (Gotta love the amount of info and mood that she fits into 140 characters.)

@JessicaMichault: Everyone has been asked to stand during the Balenciaga show because 4 of the benches have already collapsed under the likes of Mario Testino

@womensweardaily: Benches are breaking ahead of the Balenciaga show - workers shuttling in replacements. #pfw

@JakandJilBlog: The benches breaking at Balenciaga! It is a now standing show!!!! INSANE!

@BazaarUK: #Balenciaga ...Standing room only (due to multiple bench breaking) ..Nothing if not democratic...

@emma_whitehair (She's a Selfridges fashion PR): @Selfridges team first to hit the floor @Balenciaga. Still can't quite believe that the all benches broke... #PFW

@pushprlondon: #Balenciaga are rocking the 'standing fashion show', what do we think about that? Is standing the new seating?

@BazaarUK: Even legendary Catherine Deneuve took it in good grace..Could it mean the death of the seating plan... #PFW #Balenciaga pic.twitter.com/EAN501wT

@JakandJilBlog: I felt like I just attended the church of Balenciaga. Everyone standing in heels watching.....le moment!! The Darth Vader finale was superb!

We're kind of excited to go back and see the Darth Vader finale. And in case you haven’t already grasped this, we would just like to point out the extreme hilarity and irony of the skinniest workforce in existence breaking a bunch of benches with their tiny posteriors. We expect great things from all the late night talk shows tonight.
