Have you read Tyra Banks‘ debut novel, Modelland yet? Did it make you want to see the characters and story lines brought to life? If so, there’s a good chance you will. This first installment in Tyra’s Lord of the Rings-meets-Harry Potter-meets ANTM fantasy trilogy is now in stores. And like the aforementioned series, to which Modelland is only vaguely similar, Tyra’s tome could already be Hollywood-bound.

The book just hit shelves this month and, according to the AP, Tyra has already been approached by “a successful film producer.” “I would love to open up the `Modelland’ casting to the world,” she said. “I’m looking for an Everygirl to possibly play one of the characters in the story.”

We’re not entirely sure what that means, but there you have it.

Prada Spring 2012: Go Greased Lightning (Watch the Full Show!)

Friday, Sep 23, 2011 / 9:43 AM

MILAN–Prada’s show yesterday managed to be both cheeky and classic, retro and subversive. Last spring it was bananas, this spring it’s cars.

The venue was decorated with giant toy cars lining the runway–doubly referencing kindergarten years and the Italian man’s stereotypical love for cars. 1950s silhouettes came marching down in the way of high-waisted pleated skirts, mid-calf woolen coats in gray with red seams, and plenty of embroidered flower patterns.

Well-behaved? At first sight only.

We’ve heard it from two very reliable little birdies that Rooney Mara will cover Vogue‘s November issue. Her cover is obviously timed to her breakout star-making turn as Lisbeth Salander in the hotly anticipated US version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, out December 21. But if you were looking for more evidence that Mara was in with Vogue, look no further than the front row at Rodarte‘s spring show, where Mara, with her black close cropped Lisbeth-hair, sat next to Anna Wintour.

We’re excited about this cover because Rooney Mara is an exciting fresh face. She completely won us over as Erica Albright in The Social Network, when she told Jesse Eisenberg’s Mark Zuckerberg “You are going to go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a nerd. And I want you to know from the bottom of my heart that that won’t be true. It’ll be because you’re an asshole.” So satisfying! (I could watch that scene over and over.) She also starred in Diane von Furstenberg’s daughter’s new film Tanner Hall, so you know, there’s another tenuous fashion connection.

What do you think of Vogue‘s November cover girl choice?

One of the most interesting things, to me, about fashion designers is that their personal style often has no connection whatsoever to the clothes they design. The clothes they send down a runway each season may cover a wide range of styles and influences, but when the designer comes out for his or her requisite wave and/or bow at the end, they’re often wearing the same thing they wore the season before. Perhaps all of their creative energy is wrapped up in their work, so there’s nothing left to come up with a different outfit for themselves each day. Or, like the Mulleavys, maybe they’ve become detached from their work.

Whatever it is, there is a trend among designers of picking a certain look and sticking to it. Here are 10 who have done it to an extreme–some for a few months and some for entire decades. And remember Tina Fey’s advice: “A wise friend once told me,‘Don’t wear what fashion designers tell you to wear. Wear what they wear.’ His point being that most designers, no matter what they throw onto the runway, favor simple, flattering pieces for themselves.” It’s true!

Trendspotting: Funny Sunnies

Thursday, Sep 22, 2011 / 6:16 PM

Let’s hope next spring is a sunny one because designers are putting their best lenses forward for spring 2012. From Giles’ kooky cartoon glasses to Rag & Bone’s goggle-like shades. Next spring’s eyewear isn’t joking around, but it certainly is funny looking. Would you wear such kooky sunglasses?

Jenn Hyman is the CEO and co-founder of Rent the Runway. Before that she went to Harvard Business School (and Harvard for undergrad too, NBD). She’s writing a column for us that we’re calling Fashion-preneur. In it she’ll dole out advice and lessons learned on everything from raising funds, branding yourself, sales and generally managing a business. She’s also taking your questions.

Fashionista asked me to begin what will be a regular column with something that I think is applicable to every dreamer, future entrepreneur and job holder out there: How to ask for money.

First, why me? Well, I founded Rent the Runway with my close friend Jenny Fleiss, and over the past two and a half years, we’ve asked for and received a lot of money–$32MM to be exact, from some top venture capitalists. More importantly, we asked for money as women in our 20s, without much experience in running a business (especially one in fashion), but with a lot of passion for following our dreams, smarts to iterate our idea, and humility for how much we both had to learn. Fast forward two years and RenttheRunway.com has grown to a community of millions of young women who are able to rent designer dresses and accessories before special events in their lives, fall in love with new brands and feel their best everyday.

So back to the money. There is a lot of money out there–way more than there are great ideas and ambitious people who will go after their dreams, without fear of failure. I believe that asking for money should have the same rules as asking for anything else in your life. Follow these three rules and you should be off to a good start.

It’s no secret that guys have been raiding our closets, from Kanye famously wearing Céline to boy models like Andrej Pejic sporting womenswear on top runways. Now they’re after our makeup, too.

Guyliner obviously has a long history among musicians and hipsters (and drag queens), but huge cosmetics brands are making it acceptable–or at least supporting the concept–that boys can sport a full face of makeup. And we don’t mean like Marilyn Manson–we mean like a smoky eye and orgasm cheeks.

We all know Rebecca Minkoff is the master of accessories when it comes to handbags. But how about eyewear? Her latest collaboration with Vogue eyewear answers that question, proving Minkoff can finesse more than just leather.

As a participant in the CFDA/Vogue Eyewear 2011 project, aptly called, “City Collection,” Minkoff designed a pair of wear-anywhere shades inspired by the “rock n’ roll of the Bowery,” something the in-demand designer knows a thing or two about since she herself lives on the famous Manhattan thorough-fare.

To bring the sunglasses to life, Minkoff and Vogue hooked up with Natalie Suarez of popular style blog Natalie Off Duty and we have to say Suarez really works the look in the above video. Plus it’s pretty cute to watch the LA-native mispronounce “Bowery”!

The limited-edition shades will be available at Sunglass Hut starting Sept 29th, so mark those calendars now!

Trendspotting: Roaring ’20s

Thursday, Sep 22, 2011 / 3:30 PM

It wasn’t enough that the latter part of New York Fashion Week was dancing the Charleston (well, not literally), or that a select few London shows saw their waistlines drop. Now, Milan has jumped on board the 1920s trend, and that was just in the first day. You may have noticed some vintage-inspired looks at Gucci or even Alberta Ferretti’s light-as-air exits at the beginning of the show.

Filming of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is underway in Australia and we think designers are getting a little inspired. Read more »

The highly-anticipated (we think?) Muppets X Opening Ceremony collection is now available at Opening Ceremony stores and online. There are no faux fur coats or feather boas and the collection is actually quite simple and casual, which we like. It’s also pretty affordable, which we like even more. It’s comprised of an assortment of tees, sweatshirts, button-downs and sweaters featuring your favorite Muppets like you’ve never seen them before. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Fozzie and Gonzo are all credited as wearing Opening Ceremony FW 11. It’s kind of amazing.

Here’s a little more on how the collaboration came about, from Opening Ceremony:

So how did the collection come together? Well Miss Piggy demanded glamour, Animal had to include his sticks, Kermit nodded a lot, Fozzie got the giggles and well, Beaker just panicked. As Kermie says in the new MOVIE TRAILER, “The Muppets have always been about artistic integrity.”

If the goal of the collaboration was to make the Muppets’ image a little bit hipper, this should have done the trick. Click through to see the full collection.

Last night, I popped over to Macy’s flagship for a meet-and-greet with Betsey Johnson who is launching her new timepiece line at the famed department store. And, I have to say, interviewing the kooky Betsey Johnson is kind of exactly like how it sounds.

After being ushered into a room filled with a couple of Betsey‘s handlers, I was welcomed to take a seat next to the famed designer, while another employee spread Betsey’s just-launched watch collection on the table. I introduced myself to Johnson, who gave me a warm welcome and motioned a hello with one hand–the other hand was otherwise occupied, getting a manicure. “I need my quick dry…where’s the quick dry?” she rasped, turning to her manicurist. “I have to fix the tips on my nails, if anyone takes pictures…” she trailed off, giving me a knowing look.

Once Betsey settled in a bit, we got down to business: The watches. “I hate to say it,” said Johnson, picking up a classic-looking round watch with leather strap, “But after the digital space cadet one, this one is my favorite because I’m grandma classic.”
