1. The theme of the cycle is “over the top”–isn’t that redundant?

2. Bianca signed with Ford and Lisa recorded an album? Strange things no one knew. Also, why is Lisa here? Isn’t she like, 40?

3. How did Tyra manage to get such great prizes? Italian Vogue spread (one online and one in the mag), a spread in Beauty in Vogue, an Express campaign plus the ush Covergirl contract and agency gig. Damn.

4. Is it fair to say Jay Manuel has been doing the blue hair thing since way before it was cool?

5. Brittany had plastic surgery (this could be a statement)?

Walking into the warehouse space where Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez show their Proenza Schouler collection is like walking into to a parallel universe of cool. I mean, where else do you get to see Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour sitting next to each other and having a chat? And this time the universe is lined in… shag carpeting reminiscent of my grannies sun room?

I always adore a good dose of irony and these two guys know how to dish it. This spring summer collection was a perfect mashup of 50′s Miami/road side architecture colliding with the cool girl that Proenza Schouler always seems to outfit. Taking cues from Googie architecture, the work of Morris Lapidus and 50′s car interiors, the collection was a lovely take on “so wrong it’s right.”

Because of the hideous gridlock that was rampant in the city last week, I sadly missed Fenton’s presentation. Dana Lorenz’s dual jewelry lines, Fenton/Fallon, are among my favorites, and I was really looking forward to seeing this collection. A palette cleanser of spectacular jewelry is always refreshing after endless runway shows. Not to mention, Lorenz is a finalist for this year’s CFDA Vogue Fashion fund, and all eyes are on her creations.

Her inspirations for the collection were Miami Art Deco architecture and 80s Italian design collective, The Memphis Group.

Trendspotting Spring 2012: Peplum-Palooza

Thursday, Sep 15, 2011 / 12:45 PM

The word “peplum” may give us flashbacks to Lisa Turtle (of Saved By the Bell) and the 80s, but this trend–which has been on fire this week–has (thankfully) steered clear of any such cliches. Read more »

If Sophie Theallet‘s show Tuesday night proved one thing, it was consistency. The collection was almost all dresses, which is what Theallet does best. This season was heavy on the elegance, with a number of gowns begging to be seen on the backs of Hollywood actresses. Glamorous and a little sexy (especially from behind), but in an understated way, they’re the kind of dresses we always hope to see on red carpets. There were also several options for one of Theallet’s best-known fans: Michelle Obama.

Full of bright, playful colors with a high-fashion sensibility, Juicy Couture’s latest line of accessories is putting the “couture” back into Juicy–And who better to capture that than blogger/photographer Jamie Beck and her Web designer fiancée, Kevin Burg of the ever popular (and aesthetically exquisite) tumblr From Me to You.

The duo have been tapped by Juicy to create a series of Cinemagraphs (a more sophisticated version of a GIF) for the brand’s Tumblr, Facebook and also to be featured in the collection’s display ads. “We were captivated by Jamie and Kevin’s work and see it not just as a trend of animated images happening in the blogosophere, but a new form of photography and art that they have really perfected,” said Matthew Ellenberger, SVP Creative Services of Juicy Couture. “With their vision behind the lens and our designs, it’s a perfect mix to make a digital impact.”

Indeed so. For anyone unfamiliar with the blogging duo’s work, Beck and Burg seamlessly blend beautiful images with looped video content, so that the overall effect is both eerily lifelike and completely hypnotic–We swear, we could watch some of their cinemagraphs for hours. And with the campaign’s subject already being so captivating–I mean who could resist this cool Feeling Moody bracelet–we’ll no doubt be glued to our screens even longer!

Happy last day of Fashion Week! Check out our latest reviews–from Diesel Black Gold‘s grown-up rock n’ roll look and Narciso Rodriguez‘s sleek geometric styles to Tibi‘s luxurious collection. It’s all here baby, and it’s all for you.

It’s been about a year and a half since Giles Deacon replaced, um, Lindsay Lohan as creative director at Ungaro. His first collection showed at Paris Fashion Week spring 2011 and today, with the spring 2012 show imminent, Ungaro and Deacon have announced that their collaboration has come to an end. WWD reports that both parties are calling it a mutual decision rather than a firing, and we’re not entirely surprised. The fashion house has seen a revolving door of creative directors over the past few years.

Giambattista Valli, Peter Dundas, Vincent Darre, Esteban Cortazar and then Lindsay and Estrella Archs all passed through before Deacon, and none of them lasted more than a couple of seasons. The troubled brand also hired a new CEO this year, Jeffry Aronsson, who previously held chief executive positions at Donna Karan International, Marc Jacobs International and Oscar de la Renta and is expected to turn the brand around.

Joseph Altuzarra once told us that, style-wise, he didn’t believe in “minimal for minimal’s sake”, which we interpreted as “don’t be lazy”. As much as we wish throwing on a dress and not bothering to layer or accessorize would always work, we’re not Carolyn Bessette. Sometimes, our simplest looks aren’t basic and chic, they’re basic and boring.

Enter Narciso Rodriguez’s latest collection. The master of minimal added so much movement to his clothes this season, we had trouble keeping up—in a good way.
