There’s no doubt about it–Vera Wang boasts major star power. By the time I took my seat at yesterday morning’s show, Kim Kardashian was already settled at her front-row perch, chatting away with Rachel Roy and sporting one impressively glossy topknot. The photogs, predictably, were going wild over the Kardashian kameo–but once I heard snippets of a nearby security guard’s conversation (there’s no mistaking the name “Beyoncé), I knew the flashbulb-popping best was yet to come.

Minutes before the runway’s plastic was stripped back, in walked a radiant Beyoncé and her posse (including sister Solange), instantly stealing Kim’s thunder. The golden-voiced goddess looked just as glowing as you might expect–although in her champagne cinched-waist Vera design (apparently a Spring 2012 number, as I later saw similar ensembles come down the runway), there was nary a hint of a baby bump. Such a shame–I was sort of hoping for another exaggerated tummy-rub moment.

At any rate, Vera’s collection was exciting, bold, and beautiful.

Last month, American Apparel launched a nationwide contest to find a plus-size model, in celebration of the brand’s addition of XL sizes to a couple of their styles. The contest, titled “The Next Big Thing,” was rife with euphemisms and jokes, which outraged many who felt that the contest was mocking, rather than celebrating plus-size women.

But no one felt stronger than Nancy Upton, who challenged American Apparel by entering the contest and submitting photos of herself gorging on food, and generally satirizing what she perceived to be the company’s misconceptions about plus-size women.

Of course, Upton actually wound up receiving the most votes in the contest, and should have won but the company decided to award the title of “Next Big Thing” to other contestants.

Now, The Frisky has alerted us to a letter American Apparel’s Creative Director Iris Alonzo sent to Upton, which Upton also published on her Tumblr this morning. The letter addresses both Upton’s campaign against the contest, and the reason why she didn’t win despite getting the most votes.

Although we miss seeing him on season four of The Rachel Zoe Project, Brad Goreski is certainly keeping busy. Between filming his own show for Bravo, writing a book, and contributing to InStyle, the famed stylist’s assistant seems to be doing quite well on his own.

Despite his hectic show schedule (we’ve been seeing him everywhere), Brad took some time chat with us over the phone. The topic on hand was Made in Polaroid, an art exhibit for which he created a piece (finished product below), but the discussion of course turned to fashion and reality television. His departure from Zoe and the state of their relationship felt a bit glossed over during last week’s season premiere. And when Amanda spotted Goreski—who looked adorable in a three piece suit and bow tie—at Simon Spurr’s show, she dug a little further on the Zoe situation. Here are the best bits from both of our interviews:

Why build to a dramatic finish when you can open with a bang? At least that seemed to be Oscar de la Renta‘s philosophy when he presented his spring 2012 collection yesterday at a gritty unfinished space on W. 42nd St.–a move from the Upper East Side Park Ave. location where he’s been showing for years. Models burst out onto the runway in silk taffeta ball gowns in marigold, emerald and tomato that billowed down the longest runway I’ve ever seen to a soundtrack of, get this, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Really.

There were still plenty of embroidered and crocheted cocktail day appropriate for de la Renta’s core ladies-who-lunch clientele, but with the new show space and bad ass rock soundtrack the designer seemed to be turning over a new leaf with renewed energy. If you needed more proof that there was a new Oscar in town this season, look no further than the youthful star-studded front row. While de la Renta’s front row is usually stacked with his posh friends and buyers, this season Justin Timberlake was there (we overheard him exchanging pleasantries and tennis with Anna Wintour), a few seats down from him was Ashley Olsen (she and JT were both wearing black suits), and across from Ashley was New York fashion week’s unexpected new star, Nicki Minaj (she wasn’t wearing pants and had on a tiger hat complete with ears). The tanned glory that is Valentino Garavani was also there, a few chairs down from Barbara Walters.

But back to the clothes.

After years of giving presentations instead of runway shows (which we can attest were swarmed, crowded, dizzying affairs), Tory Burch celebrated her first runway show ever yesterday, in a sun-drenched room at Alice Tully Hall. Top-tier models–Arizona Muse, Lindsey Wixson, Fei Fei, Liu Wen–strolled the runway muliple times.

Those who love the brand and that uber-recognizable stacked “T” logo will be thrilled with this latest collection. Having a 20s flapper vibe, complete with fringed raffia (which adorned dresses and bags) and drop-waist dresses, the whole collection gave off an easy Great Gatsby vibe.

Trendspotting Spring 2012: Printed Suits

Wednesday, Sep 14, 2011 / 2:00 PM

Paging all Ziggy Stardust wannabes: It seems like the it-trend to come out of NYFW will be the bright, printed suit. Spotted everywhere from Altuzarra to Yigal Azrouel, the printed suit is the kooky step-child of last spring’s color-blocking trend: pop-hued and positive feeling, but with a pattern that would make William Morris blush. (Look him up.) Read more »

J.Crew presented their spring 2012 collection for the first time ever during New York fashion week at Lincoln Center yesterday. Unsurprisingly, the presentation room was packed–especially the side devoted to the women’s collection–but the men’s collection on the flip side didn’t disappoint either, and there’s an anorak we’re hoping fits in XS.

The models all looked like mini Jenna Lyons–particularly the one styled in thick framed glasses–as they should be; J.Crew’s president and brand poster girl is the woman we all (or at least many of us) aspire to dress like. The clothes were fantastic, comme d’hab, and styled to perfection. Things we learned from the presentation: neon is not going anywhere (phew), hot pink and fire engine red should be worn together (a color combo that recalls a Prabal Gurung ensemble SJP wore recently), mint green and yellow are colors to stock up on, and don’t forget to incorporate your prints–as long as they’re subtle.

We can say that J.Crew knocked it out of the park for their first showing at Lincoln Center, but we think it means more that a pregnant J.Crew-clad Beyonce stopped by (along with sis Solange). The Queen B seal of approval? What could be better than that.

Alice + Olivia is all about fun fashion, and Tuesday night’s presentation was a perfect example of that. As DJ Mia Moretti spun pop hits, accompanied by violinist Caitlin Moe, revelers—including the likes of LeAnn Rimes, Jordin Sparks, Tinsley Mortimer, Corinne Bailey Rae, Michelle Trachtenberg and Nicky Hilton—hit the bar (stocked with plenty of Veuve and Belvedere). Waiters with blended drinks from The Coffee Bean were also on hand offering fashion types a much needed boost of energy during a long week of shows.

The presentation’s backdrop was equally entertaining. Models stood on a large, raised square of Astro-Turf in the center of the Meatpacking’s Highline Stages, underneath large white gazebos and bird cages. Our favorite prop was a large tree in the center of the presentation with the brand’s candy colored shoes dangling down from the branches. “I wanted it to be a very secret garden,” said Stacey Bendet, who got into the spirit by wearing colorful flowers and feathers in her hair. “There are a lot of flowers and it’s just supposed to have this very kind of fun, happy uplifting feel,” she said. The cheerful looks channeled Palm Beach in the 1960’s with poppy colored shifts, floral maxi dresses, jersey jumpsuits, and a striking pair of black and white striped wide legs that Bendet does so well.

In a season where hypnotic, neon prints have become standard fare, only one designer can come out victorious. We’re putting our money on Chris Benz, because you can’t out-print the print master.

Benz’s designs for SS12 were, without a doubt, in some of the brightest and more daring colorways you’ll see this season, inspired by old Warhol-era Poloroid photos. Shades of pinks clashed in a multi-pattered suit look. A de-saturated camouflage vied for attention with a thin plaid in the same palette. Every color had its moment, from a ripe orange to an athletic gray. The structure of the clothing was just as diverse at its colors. Fitted cropped pants balanced out the flouncy dresses.
