New Show Reviews and Galleries! Jenny Packham, Giulietta and Rebecca Minkoff
By Leah Chernikoff
I had never been to a Jenny Packham show, but thanks to a certain newly minted princess (ahem, Ms. Middleton), everyone now knows the designer’s name. And Packham deserves the recognition.
The impossibly flowy chiffons and beaded lace hotpants (our fave, hands down) had to appeal to the various starlets present, including Mandy Moore, who was actually gawking at points during the show. Not to mention that every single item was covered in sequins.

Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2012: Desert Inspiration, Chris Pine and a Man Repeller Cameo on the Runway
Holy cow. Chris Pine was at the Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2012 show! The hunky Star Trek actor was just sitting like a regular guy in a baseball hat and snug white tee–okay, he looked a lot better than most regular guys–with his dad, actor Robert Pine, and no one seemed to really pay him much attention. He was also politely–and tragically–refusing to answer any media questions, but hey, there could be worse things than being turned down for a quote from Chris Pine. Because that means he actually spoke to us. But anyway. Sorry, we were distracted for a second. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.

It may have been held in a tiny back room at the National Arts Club on Gramercy Park, but what Sofia Sizzi’s Giulietta show lacked in square footage, it made up for in major-league retailer love. Shuffling in line up the building’s entry stairway, through the library bar, and past seated guests enjoying their meals in the dining room (awkward?), I found myself rubbing shoulders with Ikram Goldman, Amanda Brooks, and Net-a-Porter’s Natalie’s Massenet. After making it through the waiting period (during which I spotted several big-name editors give up and head for the exits–patience, ladies, patience!), I arrived to find a modest runway flanked by a total of no more than 50 or 60 seats.
Originally from Florence, Sizzi boasts an impressive resumé–she’s held design positions at Gucci, Calvin Klein, and Jason Wu, her specialty lying in accessories. As it turns out, however, the lady’s got quite a knack for beautiful ready-to-wear as well, and had her fall debut collection scooped up by both Barneys and Net-a-Porter.

What we actually want to wear on our nails and what we just like to look at on other people’s nails are two very different things sometimes. The nail artistry at this week’s New York fashion week actually veered both ways for us this season.
While nudes are still a thing, and orangey poppy reds (see Jason Wu) had a strong showing, there were a few surprises, too. Manicurist Jin Soon Choi told us backstage at Alexander Wang to watch for super dark colors (not very spring-like) mixed with brights–for example a mixed mani/pedi. She also said that bright colors with a 70s feeling like purple and turquoise would be big come spring.
The established designers went fairly minimal with makeup and nails this season, but we love that indie designers (and Betsey Johnson, of course!) are still taking nail risks.
Read more »New York has been full of brights the past week, none more obvious than the shades of orange that have already graced at least two dozen collections. From a single pop (Doo.Ri) to a longer stretch (Kimberly Ovitz), it’s about as attention-getting as a color can be. Read more »

Olivia Palermo’s Blog Will Finally Launch This Month! Plus She Dishes on Starting Her Own Line
Earlier this summer, WWD reported that Olivia Palermo would be launching a blog in August. But it’s almost the middle of September, and nothing has hit the web. So when we spotted the stylish starlet at Rachel Roy’s presentation, we had to get the scoop.
Fashionista: We heard you were going to launch a blog, is that still happening?
Yes, I’m launching this month. I pushed it back a little bit to make sure it’s just perfect; so it will launch at the end of this month for sure. We’re just working out the dates right now but I’m really, really excited.
Donna Karan spent the last year traveling to Haiti and her resulting spring collection, titled “The Artisan Stroke,” was heavily inspired by what she saw there. “My two worlds come together…translating the vibrancy of tribal elements into sophisticated, sexy urban clothes,” the line sheet read.
The collection–tribal-printed cotton canvas dresses with flared circle skirts, appliqued body-con shifts, ruched silk viscose jersey dresses–was anchored in an earthy palate of browns, blacks, bones and clays and seemed particularly poignant given the inspiration. The standout pieces for me were the floor-length stretch jersey evening dresses as I thought they best infused Donna Karan’s classic relaxed feminine elegance with the tribal theme.

Fashion News Round-Up: Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe, More Rihanna for Armani, and New York Fashion Week Personalities on Why Kate Middleton is Not a Trendsetter
Michelle Williams Does Monroe: Michelle Williams looks pretty gorgeous on the October cover of Vogue as Marilyn Monroe. But we still think we like this Monroe-impersonator better. {HuffPo}
More Rihanna for Armani in their Fall 2011 Campaign: In this latest batch, her bra is falling off. Nice. {InStyle}
Suri Cruise Likes a Classic Red Lip: She’s been wearing high heels since she was three, so it seems perfectly reasonable that she’s hitting the lipstick at age five. {Styleite}

Wyclef Jean on Working in one of Donna Karan’s Factories, Falling Asleep on the Job, and Haiti’s Sexy Side
We were surprised, at first, to see Wyclef Jean sitting in the front row at Donna Karan‘s spring 2012 show yesterday. But once we read the line sheets and saw the collection the connection was clear: Haiti. Karan’s collection was heavily influenced by travels to Haiti throughout the past year, and the Haitian musician is known for his charity work in his home country through his foundation, Yéle Haiti. What’s surprising though, is that Karan and Wyclef go way back.
We talked to Wyclef after the show to get his take on the collection, what he thought of the Haitian inspiration, and just how he and Karan got together.
Fashionista: So what brings you to Donna Karan’s show today? Did you work with her in anyway on this collection–besides performing at her after-party?
Wyclef Jean: I worked hand in hand with Donna and what I love about her is that I want people to know there’s a sexy side about Haiti–so when Donna comes and works with the artisans and starts bringing the jewelry back it’s incredible and this is just the start of it.
