Nicki Minaj sure is turning up in the weirdest places this week. After a surprise appearance at Prabal, here she is wearing a crafty pom-pom dress sitting next to Anna…at Carolina Herrera. Somehow we don’t really see Nicki being into any of the looks at Herrera. And what do you think she and Anna talked about? Read more »

Fashion News Roundup: Franca Sozzani Says Dior Should Hire Galliano Back, Bryanboy Wants Babies, and Tyra’s Insane ANTM-All Stars Commercial
Cathy Horyn Ruffles Feathers Again: Horyn published a “must-see” list of shows for NYFW, which included many young designers but left out several big name players like DVF and Oscar de la Renta. Some were indifferent, but more than a few felt slighted. {WWD}
Franca Sozzani Thinks Dior Should Hire John Galliano Back: The Italian Vogue editor says, “ I understand [Dior's] point of view…and they couldn’t just say, ‘Bad boy! We forgive you! Come back!’ But it’s really a pity. And I will never believe he believed what he said.” {The Daily Beast}
ANTM All-Stars Starts Wednesday, Tyra Still Crazy: If this commercial is any indication of what’s to come this season, we can expect it to be a totally engrossing shitshow. {Fashin}

Faster by Mark Fast, Erin by Erin Fetherston, Pamela Love, & Duro Olowu Spring 2012: A Happily Organized Evening at Milk
Heading down to Milk Studios for a bevy of presentations, I have to admit I had my worries. Last season, I wound up caught in the wall-to-wall fashion traffic jam down in the lobby and wound up missing my scheduled shows. Thankfully, things ran much more smoothly this time around–perhaps due to thoughtful planning, and perhaps due to the fact that I arrived extra early to enjoy cocktails at the eighth-floor Kanon Vodka bar. But on to the clothes!

Zac Posen is back, y’all. After a several season exile stint in Paris, Posen returned to New York, the city that made him famous. Perhaps too famous, at least according to a recent rather scathing Page Six article that painted him as a petulant child who antagonized the fashion industry to the point that he was ostracized from the people that once adored him.
Perhaps this collection will bring them back. The European contingent, Emmanuelle Alt and Anna Dello Russo, were at Posen’s Sunday evening show, as was Hamish Bowles. The show, which was held on an outdoor balcony overlooking the Lincoln Center fountain, was a lovely way to spend a cool Sunday evening. Once the lights dimmed and the chamber music soundtrack started, it got even lovelier.

Kelly Osbourne On What Not to Wear on the Red Carpet and Madonna’s Secret Nickname
While waiting for Zac Posen’s show to start on the open air balcony of Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center (review and pix to come) , we had the chance to chat with front-rower Kelly Osbourne. She’s ascended the fashion food chain as an E! red carpet interviewer and morning-after Fashion Police lady. She’s also the face of Madonna’s Material Girl label, so she rubs shoulders with some pretty fashion forward people. We had to ask her about what all this recent experience taught her about fashion.
Fashionista: Have you been to any shows yet this season?
Kelly Osbourne: I was at Charlotte Ronson last night and that was great. I just decided to do one show a day this week because it’s too much otherwise and I just want to have fun and enjoy it. So I’ve just picked the ones that I really, really, really wanted to see. Unfortunately some of them are all at the same time.
How has doing red carpet commentary changed the way you look at fashion or the way you dress?

New Show Reviews and Galleries! Derek Lam, Helmut Lang and Monique Lhuillier
By FashionistaWe’re rolling (in the) deep with the shows right now, and this latest batch is quite spectacular. Hop over to our Fashion Week page to see Derek Lam‘s California-hued leather sportswear, Helmut Lang‘s draped architectural separates and Monique Lhuillier‘s celeb-worthy dresses. You’ll be drooling in minutes.
You always know what to expect from Helmut Lang and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Actually, when it comes to Lang’s signature slick, architecturally cut garments–it’s almost always a good thing.
For Spring 2012, husband-and-wife design team Nicole and Michael Colovos, who’ve been at the helm of the label for five years, kept the theme going, with another urban-cool collection. Shown at pier 57 in an industrial warehouse that could certainly use a fresh coat of paint, the parade of monochrome looks only shone brighter set against cement floors and exposed pipes.

I always look forward to a Derek Lam show–the man does sporty and sleek chic like none other–but after seeing photos of the graphic stripes at his new 10 Crosby presentation from earlier this week, I was particularly eager to see what Lam had up his sleeve. Would the two collections overlap thematically? Could the designer balance the weight of his signature line plus his still new, lower-priced project?
The balance was there. In place of the simple sailor stripes shown at 10 Crosby, “Lam proper” was a more buttoned-up, knit-heavy, and (appropriately) luxe affair. The designer had been inspired by architect Richard Neutra’s famed Kaufmann house in Palm Springs, and it showed in the sunny desert palette and modern geometric lines he incorporated into the clothes.

Sitting behind Mandy Moore and Julianne Hough at Monique Lhuillier is several things. Blinding, of course, due to flashbulbs incessantly snapping the former pop star and Dancing With The Stars champion. A bit surprising, too: who knew Mandy Moore was that tall (runway model height, basically)? And last but not least, prophetic.
Six months from now, we’re pretty sure both starlets will be dueling in a tabloid “Who Wore It Best?”, posing hand-on-hip in look number nine. “I love it,” said Hough as the black, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress with leather side paneling slinked down the runway, and Moore nodded wide-eyed, eager.

Victoria Beckham Spring 2012: The Designer Dishes on Her Sporty, ‘Away from the Body’ Collection
All Spice Girl jokes aside, Victoria Beckham has, in the four years since starting her label, made a name for herself as a serious designer, and this season Beckham really came into her own with a melange of sporty chic looks and a sophisticated runway show.
We had sort of been looking forward to hearing Beckham narrate her presentation, as she’s done in the past, and while that didn’t happen, we were pleased to see that she kept the intimate feeling with a small show at the New York Public Library–and that she sat front row amongst guests for the duration of it.
Though the runway show was certainly successful, the designer told us afterwards that it wasn’t her first choice. “It was very important for me to observe the silences so I had no choice this season [but to do a show instead of a presentation] because of the schedule,” she said.
Indeed, before the show started a bell gonged, and everyone took a moment of silence to remember the moment the second plane hit the towers on 9/11. It was a somber start for a collection of clothes that were steeped in vitality: bold color-blocked dresses in sleek silhouettes exerted themselves on the runway, while shiny, sportswear-inspired jackets seemed to literally light up the library. It’s the latter that Beckham is most excited about: “I love those coats,” she enthused after the show, “they are really beautiful to touch.”
