I’ve been a nail freak since childhood, so the nail-polish-is-the-new-lipstick trend sits well with me. Unfortunately, I lack the funds to try out the cool new stuff available (Chanel Peridot, gel manicures). However, I’m a sucker for anything borderline ridiculous or cheap (or both), so when I saw a brightly colored sign advertising $10 nail art in my less-than-cool Bronx neighborhood, I was intrigued.

“$9.99 FULL NAIL MANICURE! FOUR COLOR DESIGN!” read the wooden stand, pointing up a narrow staircase to the second floor of a building housing a tattoo parlor and an electronics store. Never one to be afraid of a little sketchiness (I’d actually gotten my nose pierced at the aforementioned tattoo parlor as an idiotic, parent-free freshman during my 1st week of college), I commissioned my roommate as a wing woman and headed in.

After his first collection for Lacoste received rather phenomenal reviews, Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s own line, shown yesterday in Paris, continued to explore the theme of practicality with a sexy undertone.

After riffing on dancewear last season, this season Baptista produced a symphony of zippers. The show kicked off with a white dress with brown zippers down the front, with plenty more swirling around the arms, begging to be opened. This was followed by a couple more well-behaved ensembles, such as a beige skirt suit with wide sleeves and a matching straight skirt, then a white a-line jacket and pencil skirt suitable for Emma Peel.

1. Can Kristen Cavallari answer the age old question: “How do you keep from going from reality show to reality show?” (You don’t! The reality TV vortex is inescapable!).

2. Mario Lopez WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

3. Wait, more fan involvement? And they’re dumping on Alexandria again! So… why is she still here?

4. “I know how to conduct myself—bitch, I worked at a bank!” Are you serious, Angelea?

This morning Kate Middleton turned heads while visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital in South London, with husband Prince William. Now, don’t get in a panic…the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge are perfectly healthy and were visiting the hospital on official royal duty. (Though the all-white look was a bit nurse-like, we’re pretty sure she wasn’t there to pass pills either.) Read more »

PARIS–You don’t fuck with a Mugler woman. At least that’s what Lady Gaga said over and over in the video that opened last night’s Mugler show at the Gymnase Japy. Gaga’s hair was greenish and in pig tails, and she sported gappy buckteeth. She stared at the camera with a blank expression and swirled her pig tails around. The effect, as always with any collaboration between Gaga and Mugler’s creative director Nicola Formichetti, was provocative and weird. (Also maybe Mugler is making grills now? It looked like Gaga was wearing one-and that would be awesome.)

Sure enough, as the film ended and the models took to the hazy smoke-hung runway it was clear these women were not to be fucked with.

Joe Zee is a busy, busy man these days. Along with performing his day job as creative director at Elle, he’s hosting the second season of his reality show All on the Line, jetsetting to Fashion Week shows around the globe, helping aspiring fashion students, and popping into the Soho Elie Tahari boutique — along with Mr. Elie Tahari himself — to help a bunch of fashion bloggers style outfits from the label’s fall 2011 collection. This wasn’t just a random visit. Zee has been consulting with Elie Tahari for multiple seasons and just recently styled the brand’s spring 2012 runway show.

While we waited for Zee to make his way through snarling rush hour traffic, we had a chance to peruse the Elie Tahari fall offerings. Amongst the tweedy details, lush leathers, macro-lace, and ruching embellishments, the favorites of the editors seemed to be the black lace-trimmed leather shorts (totally practical, we swear), a grey-hued leopard print ruffle neck Clarissa trench, and a soft cranberry ruffle-layered Victoria coat. Once Zee arrived, we ambushed him with some questions as he was in the midst of pulling a white nipped-waist and flared pantsuit for a guest.

“Chic” is an overused word but it’s an apt one to describe Dries Van Noten’s spring 2012 collection. There was a calm elegance to his show, which opened with boxy separates and shift dresses that seemed early ’60s and couture inspired, all of it in a soothing grey-toned palette.

There were plenty of prints, of course–this is Dries after all. There was a tropical palm leaf one, an etched 17th century one, and a digital floral, and cityscapes (reinforced by a soundtrack infused with city noises) all blocked together at times on the same frocks. Color was gradually introduced but never to shock. First the palm tree prints became green, and then there were shocks of magenta which contrasted nicely with the grey. I loved the cropped jackets, especially the Spanish toreador ones, as well as the perfect printed collared button-downs.

The Kate Middleton effect could bring another beloved high-street retailer to the U.S.

As you’ve probably heard, Kate Middleton went shopping at Topshop on Monday and it was a really big deal. As WWD hilariously points out, there is “another Kate in Sir Philip Green’s world.” And Middleton, like Moss, will likely do great things for his business, as Middleton is wont to do.

The Duchess of Cambridge has increased sales for a number of brands–especially the off-the-rack, more affordable ones. One example is another U.K.-based high street store, Whistles, which she wore in her official engagement photo. Since then, Whistles’ sales for the 2010-11 fiscal year reportedly rose 13% to $60.9 million and they’ve opened four new stores and two concessions and four more will have opened by Christmas. The next logical step for the brand is international growth and according to WWD, Whistles is looking to join our steadily expanding roster of Europe-based high street stores. Yay!

While everyone is hemming and hawing over who is to take the reigns at Dior, one man has been quietly and steadfastly doing his job, stepping into that hallowed role, without much fanfare. Bill Gaytten, who worked behind-the-scenes with John Galliano for 21 years, has taken the reigns at Dior and at John Galliano, and will have the distinction this season of being the only designer to take a bow at both shows, WWD reports (subscription required).

Gaytten is creative director at Galliano and his title is head of studio at Dior, however without a creative director yet installed, there’s no doubt that Gaytten is head designer in everything but name at the famed couture house. So what can we expect this season at Dior from a man, which we know so little about?

Here it is: Lady Gaga’s short film for Mugler (or at least part of it), which debuted at Nicola Formichetti‘s show in Paris yesterday. We’ll have our review and images up shortly, but for now, check out a gap-toothed Gaga swinging her multi-colored hair around while talking about how her heart sometimes feels black, but also sometimes rainbow. Then, she warns us not to anger the Mugler woman because she will eat you. With shiny, gapped teeth. Read more »
