Would You Rather…? The Cat Slippers Edition

Tuesday, Sep 6, 2011 / 5:45 PM

Fans of cats and velvet slippers have a bevy of footwear options to choose from, it turns out. On the left, we have Charlotte Olympia’s “Kitty Flats,” which we’ve been obsessed with since they hit Charlotte’s website. They have cat faces embroidered in gold on the toes and also come in pumps and platform wedges. Swoon. The shoe on the right is collaboration between Tibi and Del Toro and features a cute little drawing of a pink cat that appears to be wearing underwear. Read more »

Swarovski just announced their spring 2012 Swarovski Collective group. The lucky New York-based designers benefitting from Swarovski’s generous sponsorship and sparkly crystals this year include: Bibhu Mohapatra, Jason Wu, Juan Carlos Obando, Rebecca Minkoff, Richard Chai, and Rodarte. They’ll also be supporting Giles, J.W. Anderson, Mary Katrantzou, Craig Lawrence, Erdem, Marios Schwab, Viktor & Rolf, and Thierry Mugler at London and Paris Fashion Weeks.

In honor of Swarovski’s new spring class, the brand has put together a lovely film featuring past Collective members reminiscing on their favorite sparkly looks from seasons past. There are awesome close-ups of an ornate floral Erdem number, one of Giles’ Pac-Man dresses, and a completely blinged out Philip Treacy bowler hat that Grace Jones wore in a show (so you know it’s extra bad ass). Treacy says it’s his favorite Swarovski piece.

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nominees for the 2011 British Fashion Awards, which are essentially the U.K.’s answer to our prestigious CFDA’s. The ceremony, which is scheduled for November 28, is meant to recognize the most influential people in fashion today and also promote the growth of British fashion.

With all the attention the U.K. has been getting lately for that stylish princess of theirs and being dubbed the “new fashion capital,” British fashion is definitely more relevant than ever this year. That may be why the BFC has decided to re-introduce the Red Carpet award, which “gives recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.”

From Kim Jones to Stella McCartney to Erdem, here are all the nominees:

Quote of the Day: Alber Elbaz Explains Why He Doesn’t Do Drugs

Tuesday, Sep 6, 2011 / 3:00 PM

“I don’t take drugs because if I did I’d love them–I’d be a junkie. And because I’m Jewish, I’d probably be a dealer, too.”

-Alber Elbaz in a hilarious and utterly charming interview with Vogue UK, on the pressures designers face and their coping mechanisms. Read the whole thing. It’s worth it.

Name: Wallis Dolan

Age: 26

Occupation: A little bit of everything at Thakoon, but mainly I work with our VP of finance and focus on the business end of things.

How would you describe your style?: More classic than trendy–I prefer polish to grunge, chic to cool, comfortable to strained; slightly androgynous, but always feminine.

What is the most prominent color in your wardrobe?: I guess that would be black? But I did recently try on a red dress, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it!

Kim Who?: Mark Ronson wed Josephine de la Baume this weekend and, unsurprisingly, the duo–clad in a red pinstripe suit and cleavage-baring white gown (respectively)–look unbelievably fashionable. {PopSugar}

Paying Tribute or Shilling Champagne? Scarlett Johansson channels Brigitte Bardot in a Lulu Gainsbourg video for dad Serge Gainsbourg’s song “Bonnie & Clyde,” which features a gorgeous Johansson writhing around in what looks like a bed sheet and drinking champagne–and even features the young starlet’s vocals instead of Bardot’s. While the video is ostensibly a tribute to Gainsbourg, we think it looks a whole lot like an ad for Moet Chandon champagne, for which Johansson is also a spokesperson. {Huffington Post}

Something Is Really Off About Stella Tennant in Vogue Italia: See all the images from Vogue Italia‘s Ethel Granger-inspired shoot. Frightening. {Fashion Gone Rogue}

In this age of fast fashion and knock-offs, finding a special piece that no one else owns is a rare pleasure. Boticca offers independent jewelry designers a marketplace to sell their unique and usually handmade jewelry designs. The site champions designers with meaningful stories from around the world so no two pieces are the same, and each and every piece comes with its own bit of history.

Leila Kashanipour of LeiVanKash–who’s worked with Asprey and Stephen Webster–is one of Boticca’s most successful designers. Her bracelets have adorned the wrists of Leandra from the Man Repeller as well as singer Pixie Lott. But perhaps what Leila is most well known for is her Olivia rose ring. The bronze and 22k yellow gold adjustable ring is named after LeiVanKash fan Olivia Palermo. Leila’s jewelry is designed to be sensual, elegant and edgy, turning jewelry into extravagant masterpieces.

Boticca is giving away an Olivia ring to one lucky Fashionista reader. Click here to enter to win a LeiVanKash Olivia ring from now until September 12 at noon EST.
