You might not have pegged John Leguizamo or Tumblr founder David Karp for models, but Uniqlo is bringing out their blue steel.
Uniqlo’s fall “Voices of New York” campaign, which drop this week, features Susan Sarandon, Laura Linney, John Leguizamo, Glee-star Darren Criss, Tumblr founder David Karp, and Esperanza Spalding (you know–the jazz singer who “stole” Bieber’s Grammy), WWD is reporting.
With two huge outposts opening in NYC on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street–traditional tourist hotspots–Uniqlo is expanding its “Made for All” philosophy with this super diverse cast.
Here’s the deal: You may have seen the 22-page portfolioSteven Meisel shot for W‘s September 2011 issue. The editorial features black and white “before” and “after” shots of big-name models like Raquel Zimmermann, Jessica Stam, Karen Elson and Carolyn Murphy. The story was a big get for the mag, considering Meisel had never worked with W before. Thing is, Meisel produced a strikingly similar editorial for Vogue Italia‘s August issue.
WWD noticed the nearly identical spreads, and has it from a source that Meisel may have financed the Italian Vogue shoot on W’s dime. Neither W nor Steven Meisel has commented on the issue, however a fallout–or at least a fault line–is bound to happen soon. Read more »
Once “The 13-Year-Old Fashion Blogger,” Tavi Gevinson is now officially The 15-Year-Old Editor. Her site for teenage girls, Rookie, is up and running as of yesterday and we’re impressed. Although it’s been a while, I’m pretty sure that if I were a teenager I would think Rookie was the coolest thing ever.
The content and design are cute but not cloying, honest but not too earnest. The site is straight-forward and clever without feeling negative or sarcastic. Lady Gaga called Tavi “the future of journalism” before even seeing Rookie. There’s already talk of it fitting in amongst other “lady sites” like Jezebel, The Hairpin, Hello Giggles and Jane Pratt’s XOJane. Of course, none of those sites have super cute back-to-school fashion editorials like this one (seriously–it’s good). It does have a feminist angle–not in an in-your-face way, but it’s there and is kind of what Tavi is all about these days.
As Tavi’s novelty within the fashion world starts to wear off (right?), she’s successfully becoming a real person who looks like she’ll have a long and important career. She ditched her glasses, is not as excited about fashion as she once was and seems more interested in books than fashion magazines. Like any editor of a highly-anticipated new publication, Tavi’s been giving interviews to promote the site and give her thoughts on things like being a boss, the Jane Pratt situation, fashion week, and more.
Birchbox is seeking an assistant editor to join its content team. Birchbox is a New York based startup that is part beauty sampling service, part e-commerce site, and part editorial channel. As a growing company, the assistant editor will be joining a small editorial staff and will be expected to write and research articles, blogs posts, brand copy, and product copy on a regular basis. Other duties will include building blogs and articles, analyzing site traffic, setting up sweepstakes, assisting with syndication, and helping us improve our social media strategy. This is a great opportunity to learn about all the different aspects of working for a website, blog, and startup, and develop a variety of necessary skills.
Requirements
Strong writing and research skills are a must. Previous Photoshop, CMS, and blog experience are a major plus. This person needs to be a self-starter who knows how to prioritize, is incredibly detail-oriented, and doesn’t require a lot of structure or guidance. Ultimately, we’re looking for someone with enthusiasm and a desire to take on multiple projects at once.
Is this the first image for the forthcoming Versace x H&M campaign? A photo of Abbey Lee Kershaw in some patchwork chinoiserie and bold gold accessories has just landed on the Fashion Spot, via I Know Something You Don’t Know, and both sites are claiming it’s the first image to leak from the campaign. We buy it–Abbey Lee is Versace’s favorite model right now and those togs (and that belt!) are totes Versace.
UPDATE: We just heard back from H&M, the image is from the look book, not the campaign. Read more »
Dior’s new commercial for its popular scent J’Adore just dropped and it features long-time face of the brand, Charlize Theron. In it, Charlize sneaks incognito into the Versailles Hall of Mirrors for a fashion show. Along the way she meets icons and famous Dior fans Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly, and Marlilyn Monroe (their famous faces are all CGI’ed in seamlessly–it’s a neat trick). She then dons a shimmery gold Dior gown and struts the runway to much acclaim.
What’s really interesting about this ad (directed by Seven Years in Tibet director Jean-Jacques Annaud) is that Dior is still firmly aligning its beauty brands with its fashion brand. Read more »

In fashion, the lace face mask may also be known as the oldest trick in the book, but just because something is a cliche does not make it any less chic. A lot of editorials have been popping up with this sultry fashion staple. Read more »
