While looking ridiculously hot in her $29 Sofia by Sofia Vergara skinny jeans, the actress/Cover Girl model/designer introduced her new Kmart collaboration in the penthouse of the swanky Cooper Square Hotel on Thursday. While we should have realized that the Emmy nominated Modern Family star would be modeling her own designs, the whole room full of fashion writers still seemed pretty blown away when she pointed out that she was wearing — no, totally rocking — inexpensive denim of her own design. And, damn, if a pair of those can make someone look like that, then put us on the waiting list.
Collaborations are the new black these days — from Jennifer Lopez and Kohls to Alexa Chung for Madewell — so how did Vergara decide on her retail partner? “I wanted to make it [the collaboration] with Kmart because I wanted to reach that market, and I wanted to make it wearable and affordable,” she explained. “I think every woman wants to be cute and even if you’re going to the supermarket — why wear just a plain white t-shirt when you can wear something fancy or something with the same material and for the same prices?”
Good point. Depending on how well this line does, expect to see a slew of Gloria Delgado-Pritchetts mixing it up in your local produce section. The pieces are a sexy departure for the mass retailer, featuring a pleather-paneled zipper-detailed mini-skirt, clingy tops, ruched body-con dresses, vegan moto-jackets, and loads of animal print — like that close-fitting leopard-spotted bustier dress Vergara lounges about in for the ads. A PR staffer looked really cute in the black and white graphic draped-front mini matched with a boxy button down top. The collab also features bold jewelry, plus sparkly party heels, sexy-secretary platform pumps, chunky booties and even a pair of over-the-knee boots.
Vergara, who recently killed it on the Emmy Awards red carpet in a coral Vera Wang gown, also took inspiration from her own closet, which is filled with designers like Dolce & Gabbana and fellow multi-tasker Victoria Beckham. “I want women to be able to buy the Kmart clothes and look [at the clothes in] the magazines and say, ‘aaah, this looks a little bit like the dress that I own for twenty bucks, but of course it’s a $3,000 dress,” she says with a smile. “So I wanted to give them a little bit of that.”
It was kind of hard to separate the drop-dead-gorgeous Vergara from her Modern Family character Gloria. As she was enthusiastically telling us about her line, we kept expecting her to yell out, “JAY!”. That might have been because Vergara/Gloria was wearing a bunch of the Kmart collab pieces on the show’s season three premiere. We recognized the jewel-toned cleavage baring wrap-front top and the lace-trimmed leopard print cami (a bit of a suggestive choice for a visit to her son’s principal’s office, but anyway). Apparently, Gloria is going to be trying out the high-low thing this season as Vergara is working with the show stylist to incorporate collab pieces throughout the season.
Will we see her designs on any other characters on the show? “Well, the only one who could wear it would be Julie,” Vergara said of Julie Bowen’s more sartorially low-key and spazztastic stay-at-home mom character, Claire. “I’m going to send her a couple jeans and sweaters that she’s going to be able to wear because these clothes can be worn by anyone.”
Vergara pauses for a moment and gestures to the vampy leopard print bustier dress, which is totally out of character for Claire. “She’s not going to wear this, of course,” she says with a deep Gloria-ish laugh. “Maybe a Valentine’s episode, she can wear it. Yeah, I’ll take that to her.”
