Remember that scary and boob-filled Agent Provocateur short film we showed you last week? It was to promote today’s online launch of the lingerie brand’s new Soiree collection, which is described in WWD as “high-end” and “ultraluxurious.” Sarah Shotton, creative director of Agent Provocateur told the trade, “It’s about dressing up, luxury and a lot of hand-embellishment…It’s really fun…I get to use very beautiful fabrics.”
All of that hand-embellishment and beautiful fabric, which includes things like napa leather and Swarovski crystals, will cost you. Prices range from $312 for knickers to $24,000 for a one-off piece that you’ll have to fly to London to get your hands on: It’s a playsuit handmade from tassels and Swarovski glass beads sold exclusively at Harrod’s. Doesn’t that just sound like the one thing missing from your closet right now?
If that sounds ridiculous and not at all like something anyone would buy, think again. Apparently, people are jumping at the chance to spend five figures on lingerie in a single shopping trip. The CEO of Agent Provocateur told WWD that the line is popular in the Middle East and Russia and certain customers have spent “$20,000 to $30,000” in a single boutique visit, not that that would be much of a challenge with the brand’s price points.
We can sort of wrap our heads around spending that much on, say, a crocodile backpack from The Row that you can wear every day for the rest of your life if you want (ok, no we can’t really), but for something as impractical and crazy-looking as a lingerie playsuit made of tassels and glass beads? We don’t get it. Then again, it’s a steal compared to Victoria’s Secret’s $2.5 million bra, and less mermaid-y.
