The Duchess of Cambridge hosted her first solo engagement last night, pinch hitting for her father-in-law, the Prince of Wales, who couldn't attend as he had to go to Riyadh to give his condolences to the Saudi Royal Family following the death of the Crown Prince. She looked gorgeous in a floor length grey-blue number that looks like Temperley (but we haven't received confirmation yet) to receive guests at a dinner to benefit charity In Kind Direct. Update: Instyle UK is reporting the gown was designed by Amanda Wakeley.

And it seems like Duchess Catherine pulled off her first solo gig without a hitch. According to a palace aide, quoted in the Telegraph, "The Duchess had a little bit of time beforehand to prepare for the engagement - it all went very well...She was so pleased that her first solo engagement was for the Prince of Wales, who has shown her so much support over the years."

But leave it to the Daily Mail to zoom in real close and find what looks like a track of hair extensions in the Duchess's hair. The tab is reporting that her extensions are (duh) real human hair. So Kate Middleton uses hair extensions just like every other celeb. Granted it does seem at odds with her low-maintenance, doing my own shopping, wearing my LK Bennetts and Zara over and over style, but she looks lovely and who cares.

Update: The Palace set its PR machine in motion, and it turns out that Kate is not wearing hair extensions. The Daily Mail is reporting the mysterious mark on her head is actually a scar that's the result of a childhood surgery she underwent for undisclosed reasons.
