Fashion month is about to get a whole lot messier.

A few days ago, it was reported that Milan had put forth Spring 2013 Fashion Week dates that would conflict with London and New York Fashion Week. In response, Condé Nast’s International chairman Jonathan Newhouse had personally written to Mario Boselli, head of the Italian Chamber of Fashion, threatening that none of his Vogue editors (including those of the American, Italian and French editions) would be allowed to attend Milan if the dates were moved. Honestly, we thought that was that: If Condé Nast wants to throw its weight around, it will probably come out victorious. We thought that, at the least, a compromise could be made, since this is after all an industry employing thousands of people and not a case of sibling rivalry. But we were wrong.

What is so fantastic about Karl Lagerfeld is that he doesn’t hesitate to take on semi-silly projects (Diet Coke, pens) with the utmost seriousness of purpose. We first giggled back in August at the brilliant name of his new fragrance, Karleidoscope. Today WWD has more details about the fragrance, and we are completely intrigued.

There’s no denying that Lagerfeld is creative–he came up with the name, concept and advertising for Karleidoscope. He shot the ad–at left–with model Bianca Balti. And what it smells like?

These days, it’s pretty hard to separate Kate Moss, the model, from Kate Moss, the icon. It’s harder still to imagine that Moss was once a relatively-unknown face, who still had to audition to get gigs. And yet, as these videos proves, that was indeed the case in 1996. Read more »

Trendspotting: Patch It Up

Thursday, Oct 6, 2011 / 7:30 PM

As if the prints, prints, and more prints trend wasn’t enough this season, Paris fashion week has shown us how it can be taken even further… putting them all together through patchwork, of course! Many designers have included the technique this week, from Miu Miu‘s precious retro wallpaper shifts to Balenciaga‘s archival prints on long, billowing dresses. It’s a statement, and a pretty bold one, at that. Read more »

Most people are content to go to Fashion Week and merely see the clothes. Not so these fashion A-listers. From Anna Dello Russo’s crazy swan hat to Anna Wintour’s pretty Prada skirt, this week saw models, editors and a socialite or two wearing Spring 2012 looks that had walked the runway mere days (or hours) beforehand.

It’s true critical reviews can make or break a collection–but so can one well-placed garment on an It Girl or fashion industry superstar. So it’s worth noting that Anna Wintour wore a Prada skirt (and that the Spring 2012 collection will no doubt be popping up sometime soon in Vogue)–or that despite getting generally slammed by critics, Dw by Kanye West seems to already have a few big-name fashion fans. Another name to jot down: Anthony Vaccarello, whose designs were favored by many an It girl and model. Vaccarello also won the ANDAM Fashion Award in July–but these recent endorsements have no doubt solidified him as a rising star in the industry.

Check out our favorite straight-off-the-runway looks as seen on many fashion notables. While the ladies certainly all look good, we shudder to think what this means for the already crazy pace of fashion design and production.

1. I suppose Kayla’s fake OD on ibuprofen and wine is the token hospital visit this season?

2. How much do you want to bet that those three girls are still awake at 2:12am because they were drunk eating? (See: hidden pint of ice cream).

3. Anthony Zuiker as the celeb guest star? They are really clutching at straws here.

4. Ladies, are you really that dumbfounded by the words methamphetamine and barbiturates? I know they’re long, but come on. Sound it out.

It’s hard to generalize about the beauty looks across the major fashion capitals, but we’re going to go ahead and do it anyway. New York is either easy-breezy or loud and brash. London makeup artists usually go crazy with their palettes, while Milan is generally sophisticated and strong. Paris, much like many of the runway collections, is pretty with a theatrical streak.

Check out our favorite looks (which, as usual, are the ones that are the most fun to look at.) Though this season we may have to try a few of these out in real life.

We have to say, when we first heard Michelle Williams was to play Marilyn Monroe in new movie My Week With Marilyn, we were a bit nervous. I mean, filling the infamous Miss Monroe‘s shoes is a tall order for any actress, and Williams has yet to hold her own as the lead of a major blockbuster movie. But after seeing this trailer, we have to say: She totally nails it. Read more »

Young German designer Anke Domaske is mining an unusual resource when it comes to producing her clothing line Mademoiselle Chi Chi: The contents of her refrigerator–or, more specifically, milk.

Domaske–who is also a former microbiology student, natch–has developed a new fabric called QMilch, which is made from high concentrations of the milk protein casein, according to Reuters. As stated in the press release, the fabric is produced thusly, “The casein is extracted from dried milk powder and then heated up in a type of meat-mincing machine with other natural ingredients. The fiber comes out in strands and is then spun into yarn on a spinning machine.”

We admit, our first reaction was: Ew. But actually, after reading more about it, QMilch could seriously be the fabric of the future.

A rep from men’s luxury brand St. Croix apparently told TMZ today that their turtleneck sales have shot up dramatically since yesterday’s untimely death of Apple genius Steve Jobs The brand’s black mock turtlenecks, which retail for $175 and are available here, were a part of his uniform.
