PARIS–Thank goodness Giambattista Valli is doing a collection for Macy’s that we can all afford because if his Impulse line for the mass retailer is even remotely like what he just showed for spring 2012 (or any of his latest collections for that matter), you’re gonna want a piece of it.

At the Couvent des Cordeliers yesterday, Valli showed a festive collection true to his ’60s mod-couture style. Where last spring he ran strips of leopard at the bottom of his shift dresses, this season he’s hemmed his white minis in feathers and shimmering silver brocade. More is more with Valli, and he took it even further by adding strips of light pink, lemon yellow, and hot pink florals around dresses and day coats. Wavy little gills were attached at the sides of tops and wrapped around dresses, and when looks weren’t a mash up of cotton candy prints, they were loudly zebra striped. And for some more splashes of color, the designer offered up a fringed coat in a bubble gum pink Ikat print. If that wasn’t enough, models’ arms were stacked past their elbows with serpent cuffs.

Fifteen-year-old blogger, Rookie editor and L’Officiel cover girl Tavi Gevinson went on NPR’s “WAIT WAIT…DON’T TELL ME!” with Peter Sagal, in which they discuss such topics as how to talk to teenagers, Anna Wintour and “stuff old people like.” For example, here’s how the discussion about the ’90s went:

SAGAL: But you seem to like things that happened before you were born. I’m told that you have a big obsession with the 90s in particular.
GEVINSON: You know, I like a lot of stuff from the 90s but
SAGAL: I was there. It wasn’t that much fun.
SAGAL: Like what? What do you like from the 90s?
GEVINSON: I like “My So-Called Life” and the Riot Grrl Movement and “Freaks and Geeks.”
SAGAL: Sure.
GEVINSON: Which went into 2000, but yeah.
SAGAL: I know, it still counts under the 90s. So like the culture of the 90s is exciting to you.
GEVINSON: Yes.

Vionnet Has New Creative Directors: It’s just been announced that Rodolfo Paglialunga is out as designer of Vionnet. He is credited with restarting the sleepy French brand and the decision is reportedly mutual. He will be replaced by Italian twin sisters Barbara and Lucia Croce, who we know absolutely nothing about. {WWD}

Florence Welch’s Couture Dance Party: Fashion’s favorite Brit songstress Florence Welch wears gorgeous couture looks from Valentino and Elie Saab in Florence and the Machine’s latest video for “Shake it up.” We can’t id the red dress, but it’s super pretty as well. {YouTube via Fashin}

Karl Lagerfeld’s Coke Moment: In this hilarious video from Style.com’s twitter, a man in a suit carries a glass of Coca-cola on a silver tray over to Karl Lagerfed, waits for him to take a sip, and then walks away. It’s probably the best thing I’ve seen all fashion month. {@styledotcom}

Oh la la! Très chic looks from some of our favorite celebrities at Paris Fashion Week. {Fabsugar}

New Fashion Week calendar shakeups are forcing fashion capitals to battle it out.

Earlier this season, reports surfaced that regular fashion week schedule conflicts were causing problems (or “model crises“) for London Fashion week, with models not making it to London or being summoned to Milan early. While it seemed London Fashion Week’s fate was the least certain, Milan is also now in trouble with Condé editors threatening to skip it altogether because of a broken pact.

It was the dress that launched Kate Middleton mania (and a thousand knock-offs). Now, the infamous Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown is also responsible for attracting a record-breaking amount of visitors to the Buckingham Palace this summer.

Middleton‘s wedding dress was put on display in late July–and since then, according to People, “more than 600,000 people” have come for a glimpse of the frock, encased in glass at an exhibit at Buckingham.

The Chanel spring 2012 show walked a few hours ago, and the theme was “under the sea.” No surprise then that pearls–already a classic Chanel motif–were featured prominently on the clothes and in the beauty looks. What we were most interested in (I mean, duh) was the nail polish. See above for the pearly white lusciousness on the models’ hands. SWOON.

Click through the gallery below to see where else pearls popped up. (Loving the faux piercings on the ears, too!) Read more »

Unexpected Combinations: Mixed Prints

Tuesday, Oct 4, 2011 / 10:00 AM

Mixing classic stripes, florals, and leopard? Sounds like a mess, until you see the end result. Unexpected combinations can yield beautiful results.

Just 24 hours after Jason Wu was confirmed as the next Target designer, the mega retailer is already teasing us with some glimpses of what’s to come (like this video)–and we gotta say, we really like what we see so far!

Given, we’ve yet to see a whole garment but from what we peeped in the video, we have some gorgeous fabrics to look forward to–we’re especially excited to see where the navy, red and white fabric, which is so classic Wu, gets put to use in the collection. Oh, and the handbags! In the video we get a glimpse of what looks like a white, textured fabric purse with black hardware details that we’re sure will be a top seller. Read more »

PARIS–Some fashion labels, a few French ones among them, have been slow to embrace the digital world as a legitimate and influential voice in the industry. “Online” and “blog” are sometimes dirty, cringe-inducing words around here (though fortunately, that’s less and less the case). But, still, how refreshing, that Chloe’s new creative director Clare Waight Keller, not only looks at blogs, but says she was inspired by the real girls on street style blogs for her debut collection for the storied French house.

“For me Chloe is about what’s real, what’s now and it was about really capturing the spirit of how women dress today,” she told us after the show. “Actually, I looked at a lot of blogs [because] those are cool girls, out there, right now, wearing clothes. It’s really inspiring to see how women put things together–it gave me a sense of what I should try to achieve in this show.”

To that end she showed easy breezy dresses and separates in lighter than air pleated chiffons done in vertical stripes in a palette of cream, camel, brown, dusty rose and aqua. Pants and skirts sat boyishly low on the hips with wide belts, while blouses were a bit loose and boxy. That sexy, Chloe femininity was inserted by way of thigh high slits on dresses. Girly touches were added in floral prints on white button downs and shorts. Alexa Chung was a perfect poster-girl for the collection in the front row (though you might need her body to pull some of this stuff off).
