Madonna Covers Harper’s Bazaar, Says Her Lovers Are Not ‘Just Sexual Appendages’
By Cheryl WischhoverMadonna’s new movie W.E. will hit theatres this December, so expect to see her hitting the publicity trail to support it. Exhibit A? She landed the cover of December’s Harper’s Bazaar with W.E. star Andrea Riseborough, who plays the controversial Wallis Simpson. The above picture is the subscriber version, and below is the newsstand version. There’s also a meaty interview with Madge inside the mag, which does not disappoint. Here are some of the highlights:
On her insecurities: “For some reason, I feel like I never left high school, because I still feel that if you don’t fit in, you’re going to get your ass kicked. That hasn’t really changed for me.”
On her upbringing and the double standards she faced for boys vs. girls: “One of my father’s famous quotes — and I love him dearly, but he’s very, very old-fashioned—was ‘If there were more virgins, the world would be a better place.’” (Ed. note: Madonna acknowledged he probably wouldn’t say that now.)
On her look as a teen-ager: And then, going to high school, I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that. So I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits.”
On Lourdes’ Material Girl blog: “I proofread her blogs and edit them and give her a hard time when I think she’s being a lazy writer.”
On having a lover just for the fun of it: “Well, it can also be more than just sexual, um, appendages. I don’t necessarily like to use the word lover because it sounds like they just come over and have sex with you. I aspire to more than that, and I need more than that.” (She’s currently dating a French breakdancer.)
On being annoyed when publications put her age right next to her name: “When you put someone’s age down, you’re limiting them.”
