The Victoria’s Secret fashion spectacular airs tonight (maybe you’ve heard of it?) and besides the usual faces we know and love (Miranda, Adriana, Chanel, Alessandra) there’ll be a few new glittery faces on the runway. Elsa Hosk is one such newbie, and we had the chance to catch up with at a Victoria’s Secret PINK shoot in Miami.
Statuesque, blonde and with picture-perfect skin, Hosk looks like the Google image search result for “Swedish supermodel.” But her road to success has been anything but typical. Unlike many of her peers, Hosk decided not to pursue modeling full-time until she’d finished school, and once she graduated she put her modeling career on hold again to pursue her other love: Basketball.
“I took a 2 year break [from modeling] because I was a professional basketball player in Sweden,” the 23-year-old told us. “It’s not anything like the WNBA, I mean basketball is not that big in Sweden,” Hosk said with a self-deprecating laugh. “But it was still very tough. We worked out probably like eight times a week, and then it was games on the weekend. It took up a lot of time, it got really serious and [I realized] I wanted to explore the world and meet people and not be tied down.”
While Hosk decided to quit basketball, her time on the courts has surely helped prepare her for the modeling industry’s hectic travel schedule and stringent physical standards. “At periods of time [the modeling industry] can be really crazy but you just kind of learn, you get into it,” she told us. “It’s harder when you get to relax for a little bit, like a week in New York, which is my home, and then I have to go back to traveling. You [start] to rebuild relationships, you do your dry cleaning, and start getting into the normal rhythm again [and then you have to leave].”
As for what the industry–and particularly being a Victoria’s Secret model–demands physically, one gets the feeling that for Hosk at least, that one comes more naturally. “I think for us, we have to be in shape pretty much all the time since we’re working with lingerie,” she said. “So [when the Victoria's Secret fashion show comes around] it’s not like ‘oh you need to lose a million pounds’, you just like need tighten up. We’re pretty much ready year round [for it].”
So just how exactly does Hosk “tighten up” for the big show? “Butt lifts and butt lifts and millions of butt lifts,” she said.
But even Hosk, who looks flawless sans makeup and standing right next to me, has her insecurities. “Of course I do!” she said. “I think my biggest thing is my butt. I have to constantly train my ass. That’s the main thing I work on.” Feeling insecure about part of your body is one thing, but stripping down to your undies and confidently parading in front of hundreds–and then broadcast to millions–while feeling slightly insecure is quite another. I wanted to know how Hosk managed it all. “That’s a good question,” she said, looking genuinely thoughtful. “I don’t know [really].”
When it came to show-time though, Hosk was ready to perform. “The funny thing is I thought I was going to be so nervous, but when I arrived there, it’s so fun backstage and everyone is screaming and dancing and I got really great advice from everybody.” she said. “Chanel told me to just have fun out there. It was awesome. You get so high from the energy.”
“It was amazing. Like a really mind blowing experience,” she added.
Look out for Hosk (and her well-toned ass) on the runway tonight.
