Archive for November 2011

Finally! The contents of Tom Ford’s top secret, no-cameras-allowed spring 2012 runway show have just been revealed exclusively on Vogue.com. A pleasant surprise for those of us who thought we’d have to wait until mid-January when the clothes hit stores to see them. Also a pleasant surprise: there are real still photographs, shot by Tom Ford himself, as opposed to the kinda cheesy rapid-fire video from last season; although there is one of those too!

We only wish the photos were larger so that we could see the details up close. As many editors had previously described (and we sort of already saw from the waist up), there are lots of pencil skirts with peasant tops, raffia, lace, beading, fringe, leather and sex appeal. Here’s how Tom described them to Vogue‘s Sarah Mower: Read more »

It’s less than 24 hours until the much-hyped Versace x H&M collection finally hits US stores. While waiting for this day, we’ve been baffled by bootleg Versace x H&M (how did they get that??) and distracted by a misunderstanding over what type of women Donatella wants to be modeling the pieces, but let’s get back to the real issue here: The launch of the collection at exactly 8am on Saturday, November 19 which is TOMORROW. But if past designer collaborations have taught us anything (ahem, Target), actually getting your hands on your most wanted pieces just isn’t that simple. We know you’ve been studiously poring over your look book and planning on arriving before dawn, but just in case you might have missed something, here’s your full-on guide to prep for the Versace x H&M launch. Godspeed.

Maybe Winona stole it

People (including us) were so dumbfounded upon hearing that Marc Jacobs’ spring 2012 collection had been stolen in London, some thought it might have been an elaborate publicity stunt or a prank. However, we now know it really happened as there is a real report from the Metropolitan Police in London.

According to HuffPo UK, the clothes were stolen “in the Mount Street area” of London near the Marc Jacobs boutique where the label’s UK press day was set to take place, presumably out of the courier van parked outside, which had transported the jazz age-inspired collection from Paris.

Things aren’t looking good for Urban Outfitters. The retail chain made the news three times this year–and for all the wrong reasons, including insensitively (and illegally) labelled “navajo” undies, allegedly knocked-off state necklaces and using an underage model in “salacious” photos. Now, it looks like all that controversy has finally taken a toll on business.

According to Businessweek, Urban Outfitters’ shares have dropped 27 percent this year and the retailer is losing investors’ confidence fast. What’s to blame? According to Urban’s CEO Glen Senk, it’s “a fashion issue, plain and simple.” Besides selling styles that are “simply off” (Businessweek dedicates a paragraph to both flares and “baggy tops,” which the industry weekly says, gasp!, don’t go together), the retailer’s recent controversies aren’t helping the situation.

In case you were wondering whether or not sales of the Versace for H&M collection would match the hype, fear not: They did. The collection went on sale in the UK, Europe and basically the world yesterday (we here in North America have to wait until tomorrow) and people were clamoring for it.

There are multiple reports out of London that people started camping out the afternoon prior to the 9am opening on November 17, and the internet traffic crashed the retailer’s website. Marie Claire UK reports that H&M locations in Dubai and Beijing sold out in under 30 minutes, and that pieces–not coincidentally–popped up on eBay shortly afterwards.

First Look: Gemma Ward in The Great Gatsby

Friday, Nov 18, 2011 / 9:00 AM

Here’s something we just spotted on Tumblr claiming to be a photo of model-cum-actress Gemma Ward on the set of the Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, which has been filming in Ward’s native Australia. This would be a first look at Ward in her role of Catherine, Myrtle Wilson’s (played by Isla Fisher) sister. Although Catherine plays a minor role in the original novel, Ward has managed to reach sixth billing on the film’s IMDB page, which makes us wonder if the role has been expanded. We’re hoping it has, because as excited as we are about a film that brings stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan together, we’d be lying if we said that we weren’t most excited about Gemma.

Housing Works Patricia Clarkson

While shopping season is in full swing around New York City, there was a charitable retail therapy party raging in Chelsea last night at the annual Housing Works Fashion for Action benefit. Hosted by Thom Browne, Patricia Clarkson and Rachel Roy, the gala event benefits the Housing Works mission to end homelessness and AIDS.

In years past, the boozing and silent auction took place at the Rubin Museum of Art, while the shopping went down in the Housing Works Chelsea location across the street. But this year, organizers brought both past-times together under one roof at the Altman Building. Energized by the cause and with easy access to beverages, guests shopped majorly discounted brand new items donated by designers including Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenburg (wrap dresses: check!), Tory Burch, and Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers.

What goes around always does seem to come back around, particularly when you’re talking about fashion. Designers are constantly taking inspiration from vintage looks and reinterpreting them as the newest fad. Generally, the resulting trends are chic, fun, and maybe most importantly, harmless–we’d be lost without our 1960s shift dresses and 1970s maxi skirts! But [...]

Behold: Andrej Pejic on the cover of Out Magazine. Sigh, could he be any prettier? Read more »

Last night we headed over to Barneys to fete the arrival of Derek Lam’s new diffusion line 10 Crosby at the famed retailer. Champagne flutes and itty-bitty squares of the most delicious pizza were onhand to make the celebration official–as was Derek Lam (of course) and Barneys always impeccable fashion director, Amanda Brooks, who led a Q and A with Lam.

10 Crosby has already won over the fashion industry in just one season and it’s easy to why: There’s something for everyone–from a structured blazer for your mom to a head-to-toe pajama look for your fashion-forward bestie–in this line that successfully marries style and comfort. It’s a line for the every girl rather than the starlet on the red carpet. No wonder then, that Lam was inspired by real New Yorkers.

Interview Russia is launching this December under the helm of Aliona Doletskaya, the former EIC of Vogue Russia. The first cover stars Leonardo diCaprio doing his best blue steel face (this is how he snags all the models, I presume). According to Doletskaya, diCaprio was an obvious choice to launch Interview Russia with, she told The Cut “There’s no need for the last name. Because there is only one Leo.” (Sorry Tolstoy.)

Miss Piggy Jerome C. Rouseeau shoe

Sick of hearing about the Muppets yet? Us neither! Their new movie, the eponymously titled The Muppets, opens November 23 and a media onslaught is in full gear. It’s all about the merch tie-ins, and this one lends itself particularly well to the concept. Miss Piggy et al have already inspired beauty lines (MAC and OPI) and a hipster clothing collection (Opening Ceremony). Everything from designer shoes to quirky t-shirts to iPod accessories are coming down the pike; most are available now for mass consumption.
