As you’re probably aware, a fairly absurd amount of media attention has been focused on Versace’s H&M collaboration over the past few weeks, which is set to hit stores this Saturday. As it turns out, media attention, rather than profits, is often the chief benefit for H&M and other mass retailers who choose to collaborate with designers. In today’s Times, Eric Wilson takes an in-depth look at what exactly designers and retailers get out of these collaborations–from Alexander McQueen’s Target collab to Christian Siriano’s line for Payless.

In theory, and as this article tries to show, designer collaborations are mutually beneficial for the designer and the retailer. The designer gets a hefty amount of money to put towards his or her own collection, as well as increased publicity and awareness among consumers; the retailer gets publicity, profits and raises its cool factor by attaching itself to names like Rodarte and Proenza Schouler.

Beyoncé’s videos always thrill (we still can’t get over the awesomeness of “Countdown“), but we’re going to go ahead and say that this one may be her best yet. The song is “I Was Here (Live at Roseland)” and we defy you not to cry your eyes out while you’re watching it. Read more »

And the madness begins…

Versace for H&M hit stores today in London, Paris, Milan and Shanghai today, and, as we expected, shoppers came out in droves in person and online to shop the new collection. In Shanghai a fight even broke out when some of the professional queuers (yes, this is apparently a real thing) didn’t want to wait on line, WWD is reporting. On line (like the internet kind of line), there was a bit of Missoni for Target deja vu. H&M’s e-commerce site crashed only moments after the collaboration went up for sale, according to the Daily Mail.

We checked the retailer’s e-commerce site and while it appears they are still having technical difficulties (only some of us were able to get through), it doesn’t seem like the site is completely down anymore. H&M apologized over Twitter for the inconvenience to shoppers saying, “Followers, we’re sorry about the technical problems in our shop online markets – we’re working hard to solve them!”

Stateside, we have much more exciting news when it comes to H&M’s e-commerce:

Everyday Beauty For Everyday Women: Simple Winter Skin Care Solutions

Thursday, Nov 17, 2011 / 10:00 AM

This post was underwritten by by Dove.
We all know skin care is important, but sometimes the enormous selection of beauty products can be a little daunting. And while some expensive creams and serums work wonders, there’s something to be said for the simpler things. Home remedies and uncomplicated products have worked for years, and we know some perfect routines to follow for easy, at-home skin soothers this winter.

1. Use a super food
Avocados aren’t just a tasty and super healthy food; they also have a myriad of beauty benefits. With just one giant avocado, you can improve your skin. Mash one half avocado with a tablespoon of olive oil and slather it on your face. Rinse after 20-30 minutes and revel in how dewy your skin is.

2. Tweak your breakfast
That oatmeal with sliced bananas you had for breakfast is also a recipe for a natural, gentle scrub. Mash up a banana with 1/3 cup dry oatmeal and use a portion to gently exfoliate damp skin. Afterwards, dab the remainder on and let it sit for 20 minutes; it acts as a mask and will tighten up your freshly-scrubbed pores.

3. Don’t neglect your limbs
Sure, your face gets a lot of attention but that doesn’t mean moisturizing isn’t just as important for the rest of your body; your skin is your largest organ, after all. Use the steam from a hot shower as an insulation and slather on your body lotion right after. The lotion will trap the natural moisture, working double time. Just because you’re covered up for winter doesn’t mean your skin goes into hibernation, too.

4. Gentle
Body scrubs, loofahs, exfoliators: They’re around for a reason. Dead cells build up and can leave your skin looking dull. To get your glow back, grab a basic scrub with beads or naturally exfoliating ingredients and give your body a once-over every now and again. Add a moisurizer and go. (Just don’t scrub too hard or too often or you’ll end up with red, irritated skin.)

Report: Kate Middleton Is (Maybe) Pregnant

Thursday, Nov 17, 2011 / 9:49 AM

For the past few weeks whether or not Duchess Catherine is or isn’t pregnant has been breathless tabloid fodder. She keeps touching her stomach! She (politely) refused to eat peanut butter!

Now dubious source In Touch is reporting that Kate Middleton is “definitely” six weeks pregnant. A “royal source” who has “correctly revealed other royal secrets” tell the weekly that the Duchess is six weeks pregnant and nurseries and baby names are already in the works (Edward, Philip or Michael for a boy; Alice or Rose for a girl).

Most women don’t tell anyone except their baby daddies that they’re expecting until they’ve passed the three-month mark. So, yeah, take this news with a shaker of salt. Read more »

It looks like Milan is going to get its way in September 2012 and will be able to show its designers’ spring 2013 collections from September 19-25. Diane von Furstenberg had indicated last month that the CFDA would “bite the bullet” and switch dates, and now that appears to be the official plan, WWD is reporting.

New York and London will both agree to move its show dates back a week–New York will run from September 6-13 and London from September 14-18–with a few caveats.

Vena Cava, the label designed by indie fashion darlings Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, might shutter, a source tells us. Though the label garnered a cult following among a certain set of Brooklyn girls since its debut in 2004, the loss of a major investor has reportedly put the label at risk of going under. This probably also explain why Vena Cava’s didn’t put on a spring runway show this September as they have in seasons past.

According to a source close to the situation, the label moved out of their Soho headquarters this week and laid off a lot of staff. Vena Cava hasn’t shuttered yet–they’ve moved their offices home–and we hear a deal with TJ Maxx is still in the works. Still, things seem grim, which is sad news to hear about a label we’ve always been fond of.

kim-kardashian-shape-ups

Yesterday, we reported that Skechers could pay up to $75 Million for claiming that their Shape-up shoes would “tone” and strengthen legs and butt. It wasn’t exactly surprising and turned out to be yet another addition to the list of shady products that Kim Kardashian has tied her name to.

Based solely on her business dealings, the girl has a seriously bad habit of lending her name to scams, counterfeits and other dubious business going-ons. Of course, her 72-day marriage and rampant overexposure don’t exactly help her case for business integrity.

We did some digging and found out that, in total, Kim’s name has been attached to at least nine shady business deals over the past couple of years. From lying about sponsored tweets to kopykat issues, click through for a look back at Kim’s shadiest endorsements.
