Joseph Altuzarra has been named this year’s winner of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Altuzarra, an industry darling since he burst onto the scene in 2009, will take home $300,000 to put towards growing his business. Altuzarra was nominated for the award last year, and was nominated for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2010 and 2011.

New York-based Jewelry designer Pamela Love and relative newcomers from Chicago, Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind (one of our personal faves–congrats guys!), were named runners up.

kim kardashian haute muse

Yes, Kim Kardashian is getting more media attention, if you can believe it!

As Kim continues with divorce proceedings and suing her ex-publicist, she can be seen on the cover of two fashion magazines due out this month (not including every single celebrity weekly): Marie Claire and, now, HauteMuse, a relatively new Middle Eastern fashion glossy that is distributed by Condé Nast (their first cover was Olivia Palermo). We feel like the fashion industry has seen a lot of change this year and much of that change has taken place online. A plethora of new fashion-y tech start-ups have revolutionized the way we experience fashion, especially in the realms of e-commerce and social networking. While the west coast may get most of the credit for technological advances, the fashion industry lives here in New York, which is where over 75 tech start-ups will converge this Thursday for a fashion show benefit called, cleverly, Raise Cache.

Daphne Guinness is one of the industry’s favorite eccentrics, known for sporting towering heel-less platforms and skunk hair way before Gaga, and a wardrobe so outrageous it earned its own FIT exhibit. Though her status means she can drop millions on McQueen or use the windows of Barneys as a dressing room, the heiress is actually a little shy. In an unusual burst of publicity, the internet popped out three interviews with Guinness today, including photos of her topless in Interview magazine. Click through to see which items have given her buyers’ remorse, the hazards of trying to be ironic in print, and how current fashion is “feeding on a cadaver:”

Know what newsstands were missing? A magazine devoted to all things reality TV. No, that’s not it? Too bad. American Media is filling that gaping void with Reality Weekly, a new rag that will chronicle every move Kim K’s ass makes and every punch thrown post-Gauntlet, the New York Times is reporting. Thank god, right?

Reality Weekly will hit newsstands in early January and, much like their subject matter’s taste level, it’s going to be cheap–$1.79 an issue cheap.

Last week, W mag premiered a new documentary by Loic Prigent and Fabien Constant called “The Client,” featuring Carine Roitfeld. The 13-minute documentary follows the inimitable Roitfeld as she attends the couture shows as a “client” and then picks out dresses and gets fitted for a Paolo Roversi shoot which appeared in W‘s October issue.

The film is utterly charming, mostly because Carine Roitfeld is utterly charming and says hilarious things. Read more »

My inspiration

When I started getting into nail art, I REALLY got into nail art. Like stayed up until 3am poring over Tumblrs and blogs, eventually landing on archives from the Tokyo Nail Exposition–an annual event in Japan where nail techs turn out mural-like talons and glue anything from pearls and rhinestones to mini plastic Hello Kittys on nails. I decided I, too, needed to have bizarre shapes glued on my fingertips. Flat was not enough. It was time to go 3D.

Envisioning bedazzled, Harajuku-type bows artfully dotted across my nails, I ordered a sets of rhinestones and various colored pearls, flowers and bows, that came with their own bottles of nail glue (which would soon prove my demise).

However, my ambitions were greater than my abilities and the first attempt was a disaster.

bloggers

Once the provenance of earnest fashion fans on the fringes of the industry, blogs have evolved into legitimate media sources and, more importantly, big moneymakers. Just look at today’s WWD story highlighting “hot fashion bloggers” like Bryan Boy and Susie Bubble. The feature goes on to detail how each “hot fashion blogger” makes their money, how many monthly page views their sites get, and presents an important question: “Bloggers sitting front row have become commonplace—as have partnerships with leading brands and fashion houses that often blur the nature of what they do: Reportage and criticism or marketing and promotion?”

Whether it’s by partnering with brands, styling shoots, receiving payment (or free product) for writing posts or getting commission on the sale of items they post about, some bloggers are seriously cashing in on their influence. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with making money. These bloggers work hard, are dedicated to their followers and add a unique voice to the fashion dialogue. “Bloggers produce original content; they have a unique talent [whether it be photographing, styling, writing] and it’s obvious,” says Karen Robinovitz, co-founder and chief creative office of Digital Brand Architects, an agency that reps “top tier bloggers.” “Why would you, for instance, hire any stylist when you can hire just as talented a stylist but one that also has 75,000 followers?”

But as blogs make the transition from personal style diary to profit-turning businesses, some readers have begun to feel that original and unbiased content, once the keystone of what made blogs so relevant, has taken a hit.
