Archive for November 2011

Karl Labelfeld strikes again. WWD announced on Tuesday that the designer would be launching a capsule collection of color cosmetics at Sephora. We were teased with images of Karl in a swirling gold snow globe, which is one of the items (why this is included in a beauty collection, we have no idea. It IS very beautiful, we suppose). Images from the rest of the collection hit the internet this morning, and it is amazing.

From the eye shadow palette where each shade is shaped like Karl, to the nail polish (gold and black, obviously–please do a full nail polish collection, Karl!), it is kitschy Karl at his finest. His new fragrance Karleidoscope is available now, too. However, we will all have to admire this collection from afar, because it will only be available at Sephora in Europe and Singapore, starting November 6.

Yesterday, we introduced you to the child-targeted coloring section of Chanel‘s new microsite Culture Chanel. In addition to superfun time-sucking kid’s games, Culture Chanel, which was launched in conjunction with a new exhibition in Beijing of the same name, offers some really interesting Chanel history lessons, replete with photos and videos.

Click through for the most interesting bits, including where the iconic interlocking C’s came from, a dress that required 1,500 hours of embroidery and a press kit from 1932.

Without Technology, Street Style Would Just Be People Watching

Friday, Nov 4, 2011 / 11:15 AM

Dolce and Gabbana, Viktor and Rolf, street style and the internet: Some things just go hand-in-hand.

It’s hard to remember back to when fashion and technology were not as closely entwined as they are now, but actually, it wasn’t too long ago that the only way to see the latest and hippest trends as worn on the streets of London, Paris, New York and beyond was to actually go there.

Now, with the rise of the Internet and digital technology it’s easier than ever to get a glimpse of what the world is wearing–and fast. Just ask the king of street style photography, Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, who likened street style blogs to a “digital park bench,” in Intel’s A Visual Life mini-documentary. Compact digital cameras, tablets, and ultra-thin laptops make it easier than ever to travel with technology and take street style photos that can be uploaded instantly. You don’t need to lug around heavy camera equipment hoping you catch Daphne Guinness leaving Lincoln Center – you can snap a photo with your smartphone and upload it to your blog before she’s even hobbled down the stairs in her really big shoes. So whether you’re into blogging or being blogged about, you can get that gratifying satisfaction that comes from spotting and sharing an excellent ensemble, instantly.

Technology has also allowed the business (and pleasure) of street style to flourish. The ever-expanding blogosphere has an unlimited amount of free space for aspiring style-hunters and fashion writers to show their stuff – and for aspiring It-girls to show off theirs. It’s created a new breed of stylemongers who are constantly pushing the envelope of what’s trendy and socially acceptable, and has breathed new life into what we know as “fashion.”

And with designs as sleek and stylish as the women who carry them, gadgets like Intel’s ultra-thin Ultrabook are more than just tools: They’re yet another way you can reflect your personal style and are fast becoming the ultimate accessory to finish off any look.

Tom Ford will dress Daniel Craig once again as James Bond, the Telegraph is reporting. Ford dressed Craig as Bond in 2008′s Quantum of Solace. He’ll dress Craig as Bond for the newest installment, Skyfall, due out in November 2012.

Tom Ford is basically the James Bond of fashion (what does that even mean?) so of course he should design James Bond’s razor sharp suits for the movies. Daniel Craig will wear bespoke suits, shirts, knitwear and sunglasses, with everything handmade in Italy.

“I couldn’t be happier to be dressing Daniel Craig again,” Ford said. “James Bond epitomizes the Tom Ford man in his elegance, style and love of luxury. I am thrilled to move forward with this iconic character.”

Victoria Beckham‘s kids-well, at least the three boys prior to Harper’s arrival–are usually snapped in t-shirts, soccer gear, or collared shirts. Unlike say, Gwen Stafani’s boys, the Beckham boys are pretty low-key dressers. That may soon be changing. Perhaps having a girl has inspired Mrs. Beckham.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Victoria Beckham’s next collection may be for kids. She has four kids after all, and has had some decent success as a “serious” designer, so it’s a natural progression.

Donatella Versace is bringing out the big guns when it comes to the NYC launch party of her new Versace for H&M collection. And by big guns we mean Prince and Nicki Minaj. Yes, you read that right: Prince. And Nicki Minaj. Performing. We think our heads just exploded.

WWD reports that both of the singers are set to perform after the Versace for H&M fashion show wraps. Of the all-star act, Donatella told the industry newspaper, “To have my friend, the great, the amazing, the one and only Prince, and the extraordinary Nicki Minaj both perform at the event, will create exactly the feeling of joy and glamour I want this partnership to express.” We wholeheartedly agree with her.

Grace-Coddington-and-Anna-Wintour

If you’re feeling a little post-Halloween depression and no amount of fun-sized chocolate bars will cheer you up, here’s something that will: Movember is now upon us! That’s right, Movember – that magical month near the end of each year when mustaches sprout and flourish (or attempt to) on the faces of men everywhere, and bring joy to all who surround them. It’s like combining all the best holidays, plus your birthday, and making it last a full thirty days. It’s that unreal.

But it gets even better. Movember, sometimes called “Novembeard,” is actually a charitable endeavor, raising funds and awareness for cancers that affect men. Participants start with a clean-shaven face on November… erm, Movember 1st, and are sponsored by mustache admirers who want to see what they’ve got, facial-hair-wise. It’s your basic win/win situation.

Since we ladies aren’t physically able to participate in the growing/cultivating aspect of Movember, we thought it would be fun and pretty much necessary to imagine our favorite fashion figures in some legendary celebrity ‘stache styles. Then, with a little photoshop magic, we were able to make these mustache matches a reality. Can you really see Anna Wintour with anything but a pencil-thin mustache? And who would’ve thought a snowy Fu Manchu would seriously flatter Karl Lagerfeld? Take a look at the rest of our picks, and prepare to be mesmerized by some marvelous mustaches.

Yesterday’s number one fashion-themed time-wasting game was coming up with #fashionicecream names (which Andre Leon Talley recently weighed in on, btw). Today, we’ve discovered yet another game to kill our productivity thanks to a really cool new website called Culture Chanel, a microsite Chanel launched in conjunction with an exhibition they’re doing in Beijing. The site is a well-designed pandora’s box of Chanel-ness, but what really drew us in is the Kid’s Space, which we guess is technically for children, but we like it too.

The first game is “Colorings,” which is basically a virtual Chanel coloring book.

Blond Victoria’s Secret bombshells Candice Swanepoel and Erin Heatherton graciously hosted a dinner on the rooftop of the Gramercy Hotel Tuesday night to celebrate the launch of the new ‘Angel’ scent. They chowed down with us (yes, we can vouch for that) and dished about their nerves for the upcoming Victoria’s Secret runway show on November 9 (it airs on CBS on November 29), how they keep their bodies “underwear ready” all year long (they never stop working out), and addressed some misconceptions about the Angels. Both girls were refreshingly candid about their jobs and the hard work that goes into looking like they do (OK, some of it’s just genetics).
