Sarah Burton’s coming out of her shell a bit and has given a few really charming and revealing interviews recently. She has profiles in both the Telegraph and on Hong Kong luxury department store Lane Crawford‘s website. She speaks candidly about designing Kate Middleton’s wedding gown (and why she almost turned the job down) and how Alexander McQueen found inspiration in the most unlikely of places.

Here are the best bits from the two articles:

Everyday Beauty for Everyday Women: It’s Time to Prep for Winter

Wednesday, Nov 2, 2011 / 11:00 AM

This post was underwritten by Dove.
If you were on the East Coast this past weekend, you got a little taste of what’s to come: Winter! From cold, frigid outside air to dry indoor heat, winter can really wreak havoc on your skin. A few minor adjustments to your skin care routine can keep your skin looking gorgeous all season long. Here are a few tips that don’t cost a fortune and are easy to implement.

1) Switch from a foaming cleanser to a more moisturizing one: We’ve heard this over and over again from skin care specialists: If your daily cleanser is really foamy it’s also probably drying your skin out a bit. Switch to a creamier formula, and you’ll give your skin a bit of extra hydration. That “squeaky clean” feeling is not always the best for your skin.

2) Don’t stop wearing sunscreen: The sun can still cause damage, especially if it’s reflecting off the–ugh–snow. A daily moisturizer with at least an SPF 15 is good, but a full sunscreen under your makeup and moisturizer is even better.

3) Keep your skin soft with oil: From makeup artists to skin care gurus, everyone is on the oil bandwagon now. Whether you choose a pricey organic oil or something as simple as coconut oil (a small study showed that it can help skin hydration), putting on oil immediately after a shower when your skin is still damp can help lock in moisture. Healthy, moisturized skin is a barrier to prevent infection and it also can make you look younger.

4) Stay hydrated even when it’s cold: Even when you’re not hot and sweaty, you need to be drinking liquids. Staying well hydrated internally will help your skin stay hydrated, too.

New York Fashion Week‘s next home, following a less than well-received tenancy at Lincoln Center, might be a place called the Culture Shed. The Culture Shed, despite sounding like a bad nightclub, will be a “sprawling, modern center” within $15 billion westside development project the Hudson Yards, and it was the subject of a press conference with Mayor Bloomberg this morning.

Coach confirmed their plans to open a global headquarters there, WWD is reporting. According to the trade, the complex will also house “office buildings, residential and retail space, a 150-room hotel, 14 acres of public space and a sprawling, modern center called the Culture Shed, which, according to Bloomberg, ‘will eventually’ host Fashion Week.”

You remember Candy. It’s the “first transversal style magazine” that put a vampy James Franco in drag on the cover of their first issue. For their third issue (the second featured male model Luke Worrall done up like Marilyn Monroe) Candy has put their first woman on the cover. It’s Chloe Sevingy as Terry Richardson, and it’s kind of brilliant. She’s got the pose, the clothes, everything is just right and a little creepy. As it should be.

Inside the mag’s fall/winter 2012 issue, there’s an editorial titled “Transsex and the City” which, you guessed it, is an homage to SATC in drag. Which makes SO much sense. Frockwriter found a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot, lensed by Ellen von Unwerth, posted on publisher Luis Venegas’ Vimeo page. The ladies are featured frolicking in the Meatpacking, sipping Cosmos, shoving money down mens’ pants. It’s like nothing has changed. Take a look.

We reported last week that V magazine seemed to be heralding the return of the supermodel with its four model covers, but here’s a nostalgic nod to the ladies who started it all. The December issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK features five of the original “supes”: Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Yasmin Le Bon, and Eva Herzigova. Read more »

Marc Jacobs recently let slip that he’d been cast in a movie. According to Style.com, the designer said, “The [movie is] filming next week and I’m excited. I get to play a character that’s not myself at all.”

While we’re beyond excited to find out what Jacobs’ will be playing, we can’t help but fantasize about all the movies Jacobs could have been cast in, now that he’s an actor and all.

Here we take the chance to re-imagine some of our favorite classics, with Marc as the leading man.

This past weekend, contributing Vogue editor, departing America’s Next Top Model judge, and front row fixture André Leon Talley left the fashion hustle and bustle of New York for the Southern Live Oak-lined streets of Savannah. He was there to celebrate the opening of his namesake gallery at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s new museum of art. He curated the gallery’s first exhibit too, pulling dresses from the 12 designers who have received the ALT lifetime achievement award, an award presented each year to a different designer selected by Talley at the SCAD student fashion show. Past recipients include Karl Lagerfeld, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Miuccia Prada.

“I am genuinely inspired to come here,” Talley said. “It’s an antidote to the chiffon trenches of fashion week…the rich and complex beauty of the city, the school as a first class art and design university, it means a lot to me.” Talley has long been affiliated with SCAD–he sits on the board, received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities, is helping to create the College’s first costume collection, and now has a gallery named for him at the school’s new art museum.

While weather prevented us from actually seeing the gallery and speaking to Talley face-to-face, he was gracious enough to take some time for a phone chat. We talked to him about curating his namesake gallery, what he’d like to see in that space in the future, and coping with the break-neck every increasing speed of fashion today.

We got a little peek at H&M’s forthcoming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-inspired women’s collection when it was announced in WWD last week and now we have full styled-out looks courtesy of the New York Post.

The collection, which was designed by the film’s costume designer, Trish Summerville, is inspired by Lisbeth Salander, the film (and book)’s ass-kicking, crime-solving, computer-hacking female protagonist. Summerville told the daily, “I tried to pick pieces from the film and adapt them to make them a little more fashionable for real-life women.” When asked what she thought Salander would think of “all of this commercialism,” responded with reason, “She’s a character from books. So she doesn’t really have a voice in it.”

In news that we’re trying really, really hard to make any sense of at all, there is a man in New York on the hunt for someone turning 11 on 11/11/2011. Why? Because according to Miles Rohan, founder of The Corduroy Appreciation Club, that is the date that looks most like corduroy.

We were relieved but also confused to read that the club was started as a half-joke, which leads us to presume the founders are (were?) sane enough to see the ridiculousness of it. Yet, they went with it and now, six years later, there are over 4,000 members, chapters in Montana, parades down 11th street and meetings twice yearly on corduroy-resembling dates January 1 and November 11 (participants must wear at least two corduroy items). That seems like a long time and a lot of effort to keep up a half-joke.
