Jenn Hyman is the CEO and co-founder of Rent the Runway. Before that she went to Harvard Business School (and Harvard for undergrad too, NBD). She’s writing a column for us that we’re calling Fashionpreneur. In it she’ll dole out advice and lessons learned on everything from raising funds, branding yourself, sales and generally managing a business. She’s also taking your questions.

Rule number one of entrepreneurship is that the second you tell someone that you are thinking about starting a company, the floodgates of advice will open. Suddenly, friends, distant relatives and colleagues will frame themselves as experts on just about anything to create the opportunity to give you their opinion. This all stems from rule number one about people which is that they love to hear themselves talk (in fact, in any negotiation or interview, the person that speaks most believes that she has the upper hand). Since I had the idea for Rent the Runway nearly three years ago, my co-founder Jenny Fleiss and I have solicited and received lots of advice. The trick is the ability to decipher good advice from bad. So, in the efforts of saving all of you the trouble, I thought it best to list some of the very best and very worst advice I’ve received.

Image of the Day: Franca Sozzani Covers Industrie

Monday, Nov 28, 2011 / 5:06 PM

The outspoken and sassy Italian Vogue editor-in-chief is looking rather mysterious on the cover of the latest issue of Industrie. The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Quite an achievement for a former pleather-wearing Spice Girl. Click through for a full list of winners:

Former Russian Vogue editrix Aliona Doletskaya was once rumored to be replacing Anna Wintour at Vogue. After she resigned as EIC of Vogue Russia in July 2010, the fashion world buzzed that she’d replace her comrade Dasha Zhukova at POP. Well, neither of those things turned out to be true, but Doletskaya has resurfaced in the world of glossies. She’s the international editor of Interview’s first two international editions: Interview Russia and Interview Germany.

Doletskaya has big plans for the first international editions of Warhol’s famed magazine–which include bringing on supermodel Naomi Campbell (she’s also the girlfriend of publisher Vladislav Doronin) as editor at large.

We asked her about her vision for the magazine, her thoughts on celebrity, and whether she’ll be bringing any Vogue to Interview.
