Thanksgiving is a notoriously hard holiday to dress for because it requires sitting at a dinner table for hours with relatives who you only see once a year while simultaneously trying to consume unreasonable amounts of food and/or liquor. This presents a unique problem: dressing to impress your distant family while maintaining a level of comfort that is conducive to eating and sitting for long periods of time.

While we all know Thanksgiving isn’t the time to break out our best Carine Roitfeld-inspired look–too tight for face-stuffing!–finding a fashionable alternative to sweats can be difficult. We’ve pulled together the most stylish items that are comfy, chic, and won’t disturb your proper Grandma. (So don’t wear your Balenciaga Darth Vader visor, ok?)

Of course our list includes Stella McCartney, the legendary mixer of casual and elegant, our favorite button downs from Madewell, a hat trick of cute shoes, and a Céline t-shirt–because a girl can dream, right?

Check out all the Thanksgiving-friendly options in our slideshow!

Viktor & Rolf Spring 2006, Jessica Stam

Just in time for that big Thanksgiving binge comes exciting news from the world of weight loss. Experts often recommend chewing gum when you get a food craving instead of chewing on an Oreo. (Because that piece of minty sugarless gum is a fantastic substitute for a cookie. Anyway.) Medical weight loss researchers may take that concept a bit further by producing a gum that contains an ingredient which makes you feel full so you won’t eat, and hopefully, will lose weight.

As we reported earlier, Hailee Steinfeld’s fall 2011 Miu Miu campaign, which depicted her sitting near a train track, was banned in the UK for being “irresponsible because it depicted a child in an unsafe location.”

By that logic, the following ad campaigns, some of which depict actual dangerous situations, should never have made it to print. I mean, I can’t believe we aren’t hearing about people hurting themselves every day by climbing the Eiffel Tower in high heels and standing on top of volcanos. Although, death by attempting to recreate a Dior campaign would be a pretty chic way to go. Fashin has some excellent “irresponsible” ad campaigns with some hilarious captions here. Lady Gaga to be Cremated in Chanel: In a Q&A surrounding her recent Barneys appearance for Gaga’s Workshop, the pop star said she might like to be creamated in the custom Chanel gown she wore to the event. She wants to burn Chanel??? {WWD}

A New Store and Runway Show for McQ: McQ, Alexander McQueen’s younger, lower-priced line, is expanding. A flagship store is set to open on Dover Street in London next spring. Shortly before then, the brand will stage its first-ever runway show during London Fashion Week. Exciting! {Telegraph}

The Times Is Not Into the New Barneys Co-op: The Times‘ Critical Shopper column can be relied on for a straight-forward account of each victim store they visit. Most recently, Barneys and its Mark Lee update was up for review. Jon Carmanica calls the newly merged Co-op floor “wide and long and inconsistently lighted” and says the new café there looks like the situation room from 24. He also said Usher looks “lumpy” now. {New York Times}

Sasha Pivovarova for GAP

It isn’t enough that supermodel Sasha Pivovarova has a legitimate career as a painter or that she’s set to make her acting debut in In Time with Justin Timberlake, now the Russian beauty is taking yet another step outside the bounds of her model job description to design a line for the Gap, Vogue UK is reporting. Sigh, is there anything this woman can’t do? (And look impossibly gorgeous while doing it?)

The sleepwear and lingerie collection will consist of six pieces, including underwear sets, camisoles, nightdresses and boyshorts, all of which are inspired by fairy tales. Given Sasha‘s background as a painter, we’re guessing she might have had a hand in creating the botanical-inspired print that covers the line.

The Biebs has got serious steez. While watching his performance on the TODAY show this morning, I had the following GChat exchange with my friend who was also watching:

Beth: dude that fair isle letterman’s sweater jacket is a hot mess
me: i kind of like it?
i feel weird
Sent at 8:46 AM on Wednesday

Then the speedy folks over on Fashin ID’ed it as Junya Watanabe. Way to go all high fashion Biebs. It’s the Fair Isle Wool and Leather Varsity Jacket and retails for $1,650. A totally realistic aspirational piece for teen boys across the nation. Read more »

Photo: Mr. Newton

The Cut brought our attention to Mr. Newton‘s latest street style subject, Eleonora Carisi, an Italian blogger, shop owner and regular on street style blogs like the Sartorialist. This is what she wore to lunch at the Seagram Building on Park Ave. yesterday. The Seagram Building is not an ironic name for a new downtown hipster spot. It’s a office building in midtown Manhattan. On PARK AVENUE. In the day time.

Carisi is gorgeous and has a great rack but, still, my initial reaction to this was, ‘Whaa? WTF?’ Read more »

As if there aren’t enough Karl Lagerfeld disciples out there already, international newspaper Metro (otherwise known as the free paper we flip through on the subway then leave on the seat) is hoping to convert 800 million more. The tireless designer will take over guest editing duties for a day at Metro‘s Paris offices on February 7, WWD is reporting. This is apropos, since it will be the day the paper kicks off fashion coverage for the Fall 2012 shows. (Isn’t Karl going to be pretty busy that week already? We’re convinced there are Karl Klones.)

The UK’s Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) must be really bored or something this month. First they pulled Dakota Fanning’s Marc Jacobs Oh Lola ad because she was holding a huge bottle between her legs (we sort of get that one–SORT OF). They’ve now shifted their censoring sights to another American starlet, Hailee Steinfeld, who starred in that cute fall 2011 Miu Miu campaign. Or was it not cute at all, but secretly sinister?
