Pope Benedict XVI goes to Africa and speaks about the value of women, the need for their emancipation, and the importance of achieving equality between men and women. Holy Father, wouldn’t it be more important that the Church started taking action instead of theorizing? There are many missions and laymen running foundations that help women restore their dignity within a society that keeps neglecting them. They lack the funds to build houses and create job opportunities. If, as you have rightly said, on November 13, charity is compulsory, could the Church donate some of its many treasures to help improving so many wretched lives? Moreover, I agree with you, Holy Father, that AIDS sufferers have the right to be respected and receive cures especially in Africa, where the disease is most widely spread. So why not taking into consideration again measures of prevention and protection?

–Franca Sozzani took to Vogue Italia’s website to vent her frustration about the Pope, Italy’s government and, a little strangely, sexting. Read more »

The Muppets New Poster

Last night we had the pleasure of attending a pre-screening of The Muppets, which officially opens tomorrow (many thanks to Bliss Spa for the mani and movie!) Anyway, it was brilliant. The producers of this flick are obviously big fans of the Muppets, and they’ve treated their subjects with complete affection, and tossed in a heavy dose of nostalgia (try not to cry during the Piggy/Kermit “Rainbow Connection” duet). The humor is cheesy, but with a clever wink at the audience, and the celeb cameos are inspired. Emily Blunt reprises her The Devil Wears Prada role as the snarky fashion assistant (albeit with wackier hair) to Mlle. Piggy, who is a plus-size editor at Vogue Paris. How controversial. Anyway, we won’t spoil the sweet moments of the movie. You should go stand in line and see it first thing tomorrow.

The protaganists go through a bit of angst in the middle of the film and sing a song called, “Am I a Man or am I a Muppet?” Why choose? We think there’s a little of both in all of us. So, to that end, we present our favorite Muppets and the fashion people who could play them. Or vice versa.

After 11 years at Vogue, most recently serving as the mag’s senior accessories editor, Filipa Fino is leaving the glossy world behind for digital, or, as she describes it, ‘the wild wild west.’ While the circumstances surrounding Fino’s departure from Vogue last June made headlines for the wrong reasons (was she fired? WWD insinuated there was “inappropriate behavior” while Fino denied any rumors of her firing to Page Six), her newest venture, an online mag devoted to accessories, should eclipse that bad buzz. Fino is one of the first, as she would say ‘old-school,’ glossy vets (from Vogue no less) to break off to compete with blogs and fashion sites run by relative newbies. And that makes us sit up straight and take notice.

Fino File will be a monthly online magazine with an e-commerce component that is set to launch before the fall shows in February. There will also be a weekly newsletter of sorts (it’s in the works) emailed out to subscribers featuring shopping tips and things that catch Fino’s eye. But she’s releasing a holiday gift guide on November 28 as a teaser of what’s to come–it will feature wish lists from Tory Burch, Narciso Rodriguez and Prabal Gurung as well as Fino’s own expertly curated gift picks. We got on the phone with Fino who was refreshingly candid about why she decided to make the jump to digital and why Vogue can’t keep up.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Carolina Herrera Kristen Stewart Wedding Dress

Bella and Edward better stay together through 2012. It has just been announced that Carolina Herrera plans to produce the dress she designed for Kristen Stewart’s character in Breaking Dawn, just as Vera Wang did for the slightly less fictional wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

It’s a risky move given all of this year’s high-profile breakups, but perhaps 2012 will be the year of staying together. Though, in all seriousness, we bet there are a lot of ladies out there who would love nothing more than to walk down the aisle in Bella Swan’s wedding dress. Carolina told Reuters,

A muse to Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy (and me), Elle Fanning is seen here in a shot from the latest issue of A Magazine, which the Mulleavys guest-curated. Bill Owens photographed Fanning for an editorial inspired by Kate and Laura’s experience growing up in California, a theme they’ve been really into lately. They posted this wonderful image of Fanning in a teal dress from their one-off Pitti W collection on their Facebook page today with the following message: Read more »

Daphne Guinness for M.A.C

When it was announced that Daphne Guinness would be teaming up with M.A.C to bring us a 24-piece cosmetics line we were expecting an over-the-top collection from the skunk-haired, crazy-platform-wearing style icon. I mean, come on, this is Daphne Guinness after all!

But much to our surprise and delight the collection looks extremely wearable. Flattering, even. There are pretty pink blushes, brown eyeliners, deep red and mauve lipsticks and shimmery-looking brown, beige and purple powders–”colors [that are] as sophisticated, authentic and refined as Daphne herself,” the press release reads.

This mix of wearable colors is especially surprising, given where the collection began–with Guinness’ spit.

Lady Gaga chocolate shoe

While a Gaga appearance, drinks, and a party are all well and good, the holidays are all about, um, buying things. You’ll have ample opportunity to do that either online or in person at Gaga’s Workshop; the goodies managed to charm us. The merch was quirky, sometimes a little tacky, and yet surprisingly nostalgic and sweet. It was also sort of Dr. Seussian, which we liked. Click through to see our weirdest picks from the offerings, which you can purchase on Barneys website now.

Last night Lady Gaga was on hand in NYC to cut the ribbon of her highly anticipated Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys. Sadly, we missed Gaga’s giant-scissors-wielding entrance, but she clearly owned that custom-designed-by-Karl-Lagerfeld Chanel hoop-skirted ball gown.

After a quick sweep through the crowd (and a kiss for a lucky Bryanboy, who was wearing an enormous yellow feathered coat) Lady Gaga was gone, leaving behind a party loaded with blue and pink cocktails and a huge room full of Gaga-themed holiday goodies. Read more »

Meet Michael, a die-hard Versace for H&M fan who camped out for 22 hours outside the Fifth Ave. H&M store in New York for the chance to be one of the first to shop the collection (he was 8th on line). The Cut gave him a flip cam to document his wait. Michael, understandably, gets annoyed with all the people asking him what he’s waiting for, but takes it in stride. “That’s what you deal with when you’re a dedicated fan,” he said. “This is a collaboration that doesn’t come around every day.” Some people even thought the Versace for H&M fanatics on line were Occupy Wall Street protesters. “A lot of people are asking us if we are part of the Occupy Wall Street political things that is going on and I don’t understand why they’re asking us,” Michael said. “Cause we don’t got no tents.”

But it all worked out for Michael in the end. Read more »
