Giovanna Battaglia, and Shala Monroque continued their dominion over the internet, but 2011 also introduced the world to a new crop of editors, stylists, and buyers who have envy-inducing style.

The best part is watching someone’s style grow dynamically in front of the lens. These aren’t the girls putting on full looks from the runway, they’re pulling items from their own wardrobes and mixing them with new trends. If there’s anyone to idolize for having great style, we think it’s this new bunch.

Given the record-breaking success of this year’s Alexander McQueen retrospective at the Met, museums would be smart to put more fashion in their halls. And if today’s piece in WWD on museums “getting fashionable” is any indication, they are. Harold Koda, curator in charge of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, told the trade, “Clearly the critical as well as popular success of the McQueen show suggests that fashion design has a more secure place in the precincts of an art museum.”

While any museum would be hard-pressed to recreate the magic that was “Savage Beauty,” more fashion exhibits are popping up all over the world and several big ones are already on track to debut next year.

Herb Ritts, the fashion photographer who rose to fame in the 80s and 90s, was known for his work in black and white, and for making humans look like classic sculpture. He became more popular in pop culture circles after he famously shot videos for Madonna (“Cherish,” one of the best videos ever), Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. NOWNESS has some newly-revealed and never-before-seen shots from the photographer, who died in 2002. They feature a young Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Johnny Depp, David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld (when he still had dark hair). NOWNESS also chatted with some notables (like Anna Wintour) who knew Ritts back in the day. Here’s what a few of them said about him: Read more »

Here’s Emma Watson’s Actual Lancôme Ad: The pretty concept drawings leaked last week, but here’s a look at the finished product, featuring E. Wats looking ever-so seductive. Lancôme’s new makeup lines of lipsticks and nail polishes will hit stores in February. {WWD}

Dakota Fanning Covers Elle UK: Not to be outshone by her fashionable younger sister, whose upcoming Teen Vogue cover hits shelves soon, here’s Dakota’s very own February cover for Elle UK. Though you have to admit, it is a little funny that the word “ELLE” is emblazoned across poor (and pore-less) Dakota’s porcelain forehead in giganto font. Just a little. {Design Scene}

WWD Gives Kim Jong-un a Fashion C+: To be honest, I think they went a little easy on North Korea’s new leader. Though the constructive criticism (“a slightly tapered [pant] leg would help elongate his silhouette”) is a nice, helpful touch. {WWD}

As WWD reported back in October, Karl Lagerfeld shot Arizona Muse in Rome for Fendi’s spring 2012 ad campaign, the first image of which appeared this morning on The Fashion Spot. Read more »

The ladies of Absolutely Fabulous are apparently pulling a Sex and the City maneuver and moving their franchise to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter reports that co-creator and co-star Jennifer Saunders (Eddy) is planning to make the popular goofy Brit show into a movie. It’s a pretty long time coming, since the show originally debuted in 1992. But the show has seen a resurgence since airing a special over the holidays (its first show in six years) that was both popular and favorably reviewed by critics. (You’ll be able to catch it in the US on BBC America in January.)

NY Mag published an interview with Jennifer Saunders earlier this week, and they asked her about rumors of an Ab Fab movie.

This is the time for year-end lists and reflection, and when it comes to fashion, we always look forward to what Cathy Horyn has to say. The Times published a slideshow today of what Cathy Horyn has deemed the top fashion moments of 2011 (check out our own list here) and believe it or not, she didn’t like everything.

Her top 10 list, in which she gives her take on what she felt were the biggest fashion moments and events of the year, includes the Alexander McQueen Met exhibit, Sarah Burton’s royal wedding designs, John Galliano’s fall from grace, as well as some less obvious choices such as a dress Giovanna Battaglia wore to Cannes, Olivier Theyskens’ success at Theory and, weirdly, Pop Phones: landline-style handsets that you attach to your cell phone with a cord. Apparently they’re a thing and editors were using them in the front rows? She also nails into the redundancy of 1920s-inspired clothes on the spring runways, justifiably praising Prada and Balenciaga for going against the grain:

It’s now old news that Alessandra Ambrosio is four months pregnant (and was two months along when she walked the Victoria’s Secret show), but she’s started dropping details about the experience to the press. A woman’s body goes through a lot of changes even in the early weeks of pregnancy, so it had to be nerve wracking to contemplate being half naked with zillion people watching you. In an interview with US Weekly she revealed that she was worried she wouldn’t be able to walk the show and told the mag how she dealt with some early weight gain.

Missoni for Target

We thought that Missoni for Target was just another chapter of 2011 that was closed, but there appears to be a sequel. A tipster informed NY Mag that he had received his previously-canceled order for Missoni for Target…for free! After receiving one of those maddening $25 Target gift cards instead of his order months ago, he’s now the proud owner of a Missoni for Target espresso set. He got the following intriguing email:

Thank you for your patience and continued support with regard to your Missoni for Target order. Your Missoni item(s) have now shipped and we want to let you know that you will not be invoiced for the item(s) listed below.

If you do not wish to keep the below item(s) please donate them to a local charity or shelter of your choice rather than returning them to Target.

Before you start running to check your local Salvation Army for cast-offs, your order may be on its way, too.
