Jared Leto Just Turned 40, Was Given GQ's 'Worst Dressed' Title: Here's a Look Back at His Fashion Choices

Jared Leto has had an eventful, if a bit confusing, year. He broke the Guinness world record for most shows performed during a single album cycle with his band 30 Seconds to Mars, attended several fashion shows in Paris, hung out with Terry Richardson a lot and turned 40 yesterday. All the while, he experimented with many different hairstyles and attention-stealing outfits, landing him the title of worst dressed man of the year, bestowed upon him by GQ.

Weirdly, he also snagged a style award from the German edition of the same magazine only two months ago. So, we guess it's fair to say his style is controversial or, at least, inconsistent. Sometimes he wears something simple like a tailored suit or jeans and a flannel and looks great. Other times he wears a mesh tank top or harem pants and looks ridiculous. Lately, it's been more of the latter and we continue to wonder why Jordan Catalano can't just go back to flannels and chokers and stop flaunting his nipples everywhere.

We waded through years of photos of him from events and appearances, from '94 to now, and found his fashion mistakes date back long before 2011 and are even more diverse than we thought. Click through for 10 embarrassing examples. At least he still has those eyes...

1994: Here he is with Brian Krakow! It's the football jersey underneath the lumberjack jacket that is cause for concern here. Granted, it was the '90s..

1998: This is when the hair experimentation started and things really started to get bad. Pretty sure even Miuccia Prada wouldn't approve of those creepers.

2001: Yep, he's paired a metallic lavender shirt with track pants, a leather jacket and some kind of blue combat boot. And he's topped it all off with corn rows. Why?

2005: Hopefully, it was really, really cold here.

2010: He tweeted this photo of himself last year and could have easily just cropped out the skirt. Everything from the waist up is great.

2010: We just can't get on board with the denim harem pants. Or the trench that looks like a straight jacket.

2011: There might be some fashion blogger out there who can pull off this southwestern-meets-grunge look, but Jared Leto can't.

2011: You can't tell, but he's wearing a skirt here. A tank top and a skirt just seems like a bit much here. Then again, Carine Roitfeld let him into her fashion week party wearing this so what do we know?

2011: One of several mesh shirts he's worn over the years. We'll borrow GQ's caption for this one: "If you're going to expose your nipples in a mesh tank top, don't make a face that says, 'Oh yeah, you like this? I know you like this.' Also, don't go out in public."

2011: At least he's not in it alone.
